Eh, i enjoy the game but i can really see where people don't like it. The group focus and lack of traditional MMO style really does hurt it in most people's opinion. I personally love it, and i hope that Turbine keeps making content every couple months, and I will be quite satisfied for one.
the big thing, is finding likeminded players in the game, which can be tough, but once you have, it is a fantastically rewarding game.

We have tried it. We don't feel it's worth the monthly fee. Why is this so hard to understand? It's not a "bad" game. It's just not worth the money. And if it doesn't get enough subscribers Turbine will have to shut it down. As of right now I suspect it's in the red since they haven't even paid back their development costs yet. And at the rate people are leaving the game they may not be able to.

No need to be a [Finwe edit] if other people have differing opinions than yours. I enjoy it, and thats that, there are quite a few players obviously that like it. You are more than entitled to your opinions, just don't shoot others down for theirs.

Don't get pissy with me because you sat here and told one big exaggaration story about people not minding that DnD is less then what it was in PnP. Look at around the forum and get clue here. Damn near all of us are pissed because DDO IS LESS then it was PnP. If people were satisified with what the game offers, we wouldn't be here now would we?
Lastly, you don't have proof that "most" people like how the game is. As you said, only a "few" of your friends like the game and how your opinions overrides the thousands of players around you is beyond me. You might want to remind yourself that the world doesn't revolve you and your friends.
What in the blue hell are you talking about? i think you got your flames confused with someone else, all i said is that I enjoy the game, but can understand why some people might not. check the names before you start getting all worked up.

Reported me? for what?
I started posting to check out auto assault, then poked in here to throw in my 2 cents and get reamed out for no reason? Seriously you have some issues if someone disagreeing with you is reportable. I haven't done anything in violation of the rules here. Anyways, i see this is going nowhere, and no need to argue about this.

WoW. I'm thinking "I've already reported you" as being pretty damn immature.
Where is the proof of the game dying? That they have a free trial? So that people can make up their own minds about the game instead of having to listen to hateboys on MMORPG.com?
Server merges? Maybe I'm out of the loop but where do they talk about server merges? If players do it doesn't mean they are needed, but that those players have a hard time getting a group for different reasons... most prolly because they are on peoples ignore list...
And CaptainRPG and Ilikewhatever are most prolly the same person, or why else would someone create a new account and start spewing this kind of shit. Accusing me of being a nazi has gotten him a nice warning I guess, now he is using a second account, thinking people won't realise it's the same person...

Like actual server merges, like empty servers, like lowering of monthly fees...
Having a trial doesn't mean a game is dying, it's a tool, to be able to let players make up their own minds about a game before they buy it.
Do you realise how many copies a game must have sold to be in the top 5 for a week or two? A lot. if not being in the top 10 means, a game is dying, then all MMORPGs but WoW are dying.
European servers are getting fuller every day, official forum is getting more active too.
Just because some doomsayers on MMORPG.COM say so, doesn't mean it's actually happening, you have to start to realise that.
Look at other MMORPG.COM forums and see how many people are flaming... MMORPG.COM is known for being the forum for hateboys to come to and flame the hell out of a game they don't like, because they don't have a subscription to that game anymore, and thus can't post on the official forum anymore.
That's it again for me for today and prolly a few weeks, I have given up on feeding the haters on here, doesn't lead to anything good, I will stick with the people who actually play the game on the official forums.
Like actual server merges, like empty servers, like lowering of monthly fees...
If you check the server population list post on DDO.com... It seems to me that according to the latest posts, server population for the server listed hangs around 600-700... That seems a little low to me.
Having a trial doesn't mean a game is dying, it's a tool, to be able to let players make up their own minds about a game before they buy it.
You are right... Having a free trial does not, in and of itself, mean that the game is dying. But, at least to me, it seems awful early to be giving free trials. Less than 2 months after release. Can you name any other MMORPG that has had a free trial so soon after release?
Do you realise how many copies a game must have sold to be in the top 5 for a week or two? A lot. if not being in the top 10 means, a game is dying, then all MMORPGs but WoW are dying.
To me the point is not how many copies of a game you sold.... But how many of those copies turn into subscribers. From what I have been told, Turbine needs around 50k to 60k paying subscribers to break even. And no I do not have any proof of this... But if you have any proof of something different I am willing to listen.
European servers are getting fuller every day, official forum is getting more active too.

It's not a whole lot, but those are player made statistics. Not counting how many people are flagged anonymous (which many players who are in proper guilds do, because they don't need the LFG feature, and might even be annoyed by randomly inviting and /telling people). I did some counting a couple of weeks ago on my Euro server, and there were 900 people online on a Sunday at noon. Not too bad if you ask me.

I dunno who ever got the idea that having a free trial for a game is a tool to get more people on it, because original subscribers weren't enough. MXO for instance never had a free trial, and that game isn't doing very well. EQ2 had an early free trial, SWG too if I remember correctly. WoW, Eve, L2, CoH, CoV all have a buddy program running, since launch. I think it was EQ2 that had a trial from the get go, and people were already screaming how the game is dead before it even started, yet it is in the top5 on MMORPG.COM and seems to be doing fine.

So if a game cost $3.000.000 to make, and it sold 100.000 copies for $30 each, it didn't break even? Having 50k subscribers just means it brings in $750.000 a month, which would break it even in 4 months, if it cost $3m to make. $750k a month is more than enough to pay for server hosting and to have a team work on bug fixes and content updates. Until Turbine publishes subscriber numbers, all this discussion is for nothing. They could have 50k they could have 100k, you just can't know if you don't have access to the actual numbers.
European servers are getting fuller every day, official forum is getting more active too. Speaking of which... Do you have any proof that the EU servers are getting fuller every day?
Well, I can see it when I go into the newbie harbor and enter the inns, they are bursting with people on prime time. The first page of the LFG screen is full of low level parties looking for more people, when I started playing there were maybe 4 or 5 groups, now there are easily 10+. That's no hard proof of it getting more players, just a feeling, but that's worth as much as all the doomsayers saying that the game is losing more people than it gets.
Just because some doomsayers on MMORPG.COM say so, doesn't mean it's actually happening, you have to start to realise that. You are right. People should not listen to every doomsayer...

Oh and by the way... Gervik, you never answered my question... Do you have proof that DDO was made for a nitch group of players? Or is this just your thoughts on it?
Hmm, did I say that at some point? Could you please point me to where I said that? I think DDO was made for PnP roleplayers, who are not a niche group, or else Hasbro wouldn't have bought WotC and the industry wouldn't have been able to release that many PnP roleplaying games. There are millions of pen and paper roleplayers out there. My gut tells me a big majority of them have a PC and many of the older pnp players have lost their groups due to real life taking precedence in their lives. Like me, who now, through DDO, has a new way to play with my old friends, who in some case are many thousand miles away from me due to work. I didn't expect DDO to be another EQ, DAoC or WoW, and thus I wasn't disappointed, but pleasantly surprised by the way the D&D rules were _adapted_ to a MMORPG setting.
Saying that a Pen and Paper conversion of the most popular PnP roleplaying game is a niche game would be ignorant, as it has the potential to attract quite a few people. Just look at MMORPG.COM and the top anticipated MMORPG... Yes it's Warhammer Online, which has its roots in the Tabletop Strategy game and the WFRP pnp rpg game.
I am looking forward to WO, but I have to admit I was looking more forward to it when it was still developed by Climax, with GW backing it up. Now I have the feeling, WO will be another DAoC, with the engine that was developed for Imperator Online... what a coincidence, eh? That Imperator was scrapped shortly before they announced WAR...
Oh well, that's what I think, take it for what it's worth.

I agree that it is not an accurate readinbg of how many are actually online... But if you follow the trend you can get a fairly good view of what is happening with that server... And it seems like the population is going down. And 900 is not a bad count and I am sure that Turbine would gladly accept that count. But I wonder about the other servers?

Thing is, a buddy program is different than a free trial. In order to get a buddy pass, someone has to buy the game. With a free pass, no one has to buy it. (Smiling) Are you actualy saying that the people on MMORPG.COM mean something?
Do you realise how many copies a game must have sold to be in the top 5 for a week or two? A lot. if not being in the top 10 means, a game is dying, then all MMORPGs but WoW are dying. Actually, no it did not break even... It may have made back the cost of production, but if it is an MMO, it has continuing costs that need to be payed. And you forget, Turbine not only has to pay the bills, but it has atleast two other comnpanies to pay, Atari and WotC. And you are right, until Turbine publishes the official numbers... And I doubt they will ever do that.
European servers are getting fuller every day, official forum is getting more active too. Speaking of which... Do you have any proof that the EU servers are getting fuller every day?

That's no hard proof of it getting more players, just a feeling, but that's worth as much as all the doomsayers saying that the game is losing more people than it gets. Two things here... First, that does not mean that "new" players are buying the game or subscribing to it. It could very well just be players already subscribing are srarting new characters. So it is not really proof, it just seems to you that way. And you may be right that they are new players... We just don't know...

I will look up the post for you... But it really does not make a big difference... I do not mind your posts, and I enjoy reading them... I just need to clarify some of what you post. It is in no way an attack on you personally.
No offense taken at all Ian, good argumentation is what a forum is for. You have some valid points there, but the whole proof issue for me was to make people realise that they don't have solid proof, just opinions and experiences, just like you said.
So for now, I won't be giving any more proof, until everyone else delivers the same for their opinions and experiences.
I think that most of the haters here are hopping a bandwagon, without thinking for themselves, and I think we can all agree on that doing so is bad, not only for the game, but also for themselves.

Sounds good to me... I "try" to provide proof, and if it is conjecture, I try to state that... Just like"I was told" that it takes 50k to 60k to keep an MMO running...
I look forward to further jousts with you...
Oh, and if I wrongly accused you of the nirche post, I do apologize for that... I really do not feel like readinf through all of those pages of posts to find the post. I wish MMORPG.COM had a search mode...
Originally posted by gevrik I am done arguing with you, you just believe what you want to believe.
Nice way taking the thread off topic again with the personal bashing...
Please, stay on topic and don't try to make hearsay from a fellow minded poster look like facts.
You don't EVEN ARGUE gevrik. You just bob and weave question thrown at you. You refute with no proof behind what you say. You're only counter point to any post you consider a bash, is your hate so your opinion doesn't matter. Funny, but that equal applies to fanboy outlook. It doesn't matter if the person who is posting to you, hates the game or likes the game, if you don't proof, you can't refute their point.
For proof that the game is doing bad look at the number of complaints, look at the number of posts with guildies not showing up and look at the history of MMORPGs, to see what other MMORPGs have made that mistakes as DDO as well as find MMORPGs that made the attempts to grab players early with free trials like DDO.
It's not a whole lot, but those are player made statistics.
How ironic, just like your European server statistics.
As I told another post, what one server has, another server doesn't. One server may have a lot people while another may be half-empty because all the people on that server are going to the server you are on due to lack of players on the last server.
Having a trial doesn't mean a game is dying, it's a tool, to be able to let players make up their own minds about a game before they buy it.
I dunno who ever got the idea that having a free trial for a game is a tool to get more people on it, because original subscribers weren't enough. MXO for instance never had a free trial, and that game isn't doing very well. EQ2 had an early free trial, SWG too if I remember correctly. They have a free 3 day trial or a game card WoW, but never do let players play a week or more if the game is just starting. WoW didn't have gaming cards until months after the game came out by the way. Look at the history of other MMORPGs. EQ2 was doing horrible at beginning and so SOE pulled out all string to keep the players. I do believe during the time, SOE lost their advertise with Pizza Hunt when the game started to drag.
Like we said, these people have to pay other companies the money they make off the game and to keep the servers going, they need to continue making more money. So hard to understand about that gevrik?
Well, I can see it when I go into the newbie harbor and enter the inns, they are bursting with people on prime time.
Yes, the proof is in the eye of the beholder. Nice logical there, gevrik.

Yep, I think it's 50 to 60k subs to make a game profitable, to keep it running you need a lot less, look at Neocron for instance, it's been running for like 4 years with a fraction of the amount of subscribers.
I think it was someone else who said that it is intended as a niche game, I wouldn't say so, for the reasons I gave earlier.
I'll post some more tomorrow, don't have much time left today, looking forward to your replies.
And did I hear something else in this thread? I though there was a small, muffled voice, trying to address me, but it must be to insignificant to warrant a reply...

Currently Playing: Dungeons and Dragons Online.

Eh, i enjoy the game but i can really see where people don't
like it. The group focus and lack of traditional MMO style really does
hurt it in most people's opinion.
Please keep your lies to yourself.

Thats that guys first post?
/reported, please ban!
And look at his forum name..? Wow, issues.
WoW. I'm thinking "I've already reported you" as being pretty damn immature.
Nice way taking the thread off topic again with the personal bashing...
Please, stay on topic and don't try to make hearsay from a fellow minded poster look like facts.

I will look up the post for you... But it really does not make a big difference... I do not mind your posts, and I enjoy reading them... I just need to clarify some of what you post. It is in no way an attack on you personally.
For proof that the game is doing bad look at the number of complaints, look at the number of posts with guildies not showing up and look at the history of MMORPGs, to see what other MMORPGs have made that mistakes as DDO as well as find MMORPGs that made the attempts to grab players early with free trials like DDO.
