Of all the silly things people whine about.
And yet here you are whining about people whining about being forced to install and use a completely unnecessary piece of software in order to play a 25 year old game. Pot meet kettle. Some people don't mind launchers, some people hate them, its down to the individual's choice. So maybe get over yourselves.
Is it the same though, when people are complaining about it on a site whose namesake is a genre where you literally can't play a single title without using a game-specific launcher? :D

MMORPG gamers have been dealing with multiple launchers for the entirety of the genre's life, right?  Yet, the crying en masse started only recently.
Because every damn company seems to want their own launcher, and therefore store. Honestly I didn't really think much about launchers until about the last year and a half, where I got so many warning emails about failed log in attempts to my Ubisoft and Epic launchers that I decided to take my credit card info out of Ubisoft and never use it again. And for the same reason I won't ever buy anything through Epic's store. I don't think the biggest dislike over launchers is due to bone idleness, I think its because people don't want to give yet another group of assholes their credit card info.

Yet that has fuck all to do with the current situation. People suddenly have to use a launcher to play a 25 year old game, said launcher is not working as intended, and now many people are pissed off at a company that tried to do something nice for them. It just seems a ridiculous situation.
Well ya know steam did start this launcher bullshit.

    Edit: “valve”

Yeah. Hoping they resolve it before their deadline.
I'm going to guess they will extend their deadline.

Well, it's almost resolved lol. I managed to get the code to register, but now there is still no install link and the "buy now" link does nothing. Hey, making progress.

Typical Bethesda. Didn't bother to make this masterpiece more compatible with today's systems. The resolutions goes only up to 1280 X 1024 and there is a green filter all over the place.

It certainly is, but it's not at all a unique situation (at least not the technical issue portion; Steam had login and other technical issues itself only two days ago, and we've seen multiple other companies and their launchers have issues).

That's why trying to pinpoint this for "launcher outrage" seems a little overblown.  For a free game (one of the greatest RPGs ever made, no less), all you have to do is download a launcher.  That's it.

As far as data security, I don't honestly believe we have as much control over that as we think we do.  Facebook keeps suffering data breaches.  At this point, who hasn't?  If one hasn't read up on your CC company's fraudulent charge protection or at least the process, one really shouldn't be using it online at all.  Honestly, general consumers don't seem to care about their data security at all, evidenced by the continued growth of the Facebook userbase in spite of events like the recent, where it's been found Facebook stored something like a quarter of all passwords created by their users over about half the site's entire lifespan stored in plaintext files.  They sat on that fact for 3 months, only owning up to it after a whistleblower inside the company leaked the fact.

With that kind of consumer apathy, it is no wonder those with ill intent seem to wantonly and boldly attack these companies' digital infrastructures constantly, nor is it any wonder companies continue to do the bare minimum to keep their customer data secure.

Nice offer for those who somehow still don't own that game.

Should def. pick it up. If you don't want to get it through the Bethesda launcher, there's always GOG for $15.. still a great deal with all the many many many hours you can get. And def. play it with the Morrowind Overhaul.

I finally got the code to work for me. I waited a few hours to let everyone else finish hammering the site.
