Open-License 3D engines?

qattackqattack Member Posts: 14

Do any open-license 3D engines exist?  Better yet, are there any that incorporate more tools that could be utilized to make an MMORPG with even less effort?

I bookmarked this thing a while ago but I've never had the time/inclination to actually mess with it.

You can just download it. According to the "Buy" section, they have a free version (you can't charge for whatever you make with it and theres a watermark somewhere).

Dunno if thats what you wanted.

Blender3D also has a game engine but I've only used it for making 3D renders.

There's NWN (and NWN2), but if you plan on charging for your game, they probably will require licensing fees.  But I know the NWN community has dozens of little projects in persistant state worlds going on, so I imagine they give you a lot of leeway in hosting a game.

Problem is that it is not MMO; it can only handle something like close to 100 players at a time, or something like that.  It's pretty much like the mid-point between a big Diablo 2 game, and a small MMO.

Now that I think about it, how many players do you actually need to call yourself "massively multiplayer"?  100?  500?  1,000?  10,000?  What's the benchmark here?

If you want a whole Dev Kit that's open source, there's always Reality Factory

Otherwise, the best open-source 3D engine I've worked with is Ogre 3D.

Ogre 3D is ONLY a graphics engine and not a full on game engine. You're going to have to write your own game logic, physics, netcode and sound. But it's well supported in many freeware / open-source 3D modellers and level editors.
