Age of Conan? What a bad setting.

I'm one of those players that doesn't care about lore. I don't play games for lore, I play games for fun.

This game's title, Age of Conan, was enough to turn me off.

Age of Conan? Like Arnold Schwarzenegger? LOL!

I was like, "Erm, no. I won't be playing Age of Schwarzenegger. I mean, how fun can a game about republicans vs. democrats really be?"

Notice how I never stopped by to tell you all how I thought that the game was a complete joke? That's because I'm a nice guy.

Out of boredome I decided to read a little bit about this game and I have to admit that I'm impressed by this game's list of features.

There are at least three things that could kill this game:

1) Lack of PR - if nobody hears about this game's features then nobody will ever check it out.

2) The name and setting - Um, Conan? Really?

3) A buggy and botched launch - AO was hit hard by its launch... let's hope that AoC is both stable and complete when it goes on sale!

If Age of Conan is a finished game, has stable servers and delivers on its promised game systems then I know what game I'll be playing next year.

By features alone, Age of Conan will be a MMOG giant.

Unfortunately it is all too often that promised MMO features do not translate into functional game play. I do hope that FunCom has learned from AO and will deliver a complete and functional game with all of the promised features both implemented and relatively bug free this time.

Age of Conan is currently at the top of my most anticipated game list.

Don't let me down FunCom!

    Glad you like it.

That said, I really like how they've gone about advertising the game and IMO its a very smart way of doing it. Is there a lack of knowledge about the game? You bet, but its only been known publically for a little over a year and it's expected to be released in the next 6 months. If they stick to that, it would be nice to find out about a game and not have to know that its still 3-5 years off from being reality.

    E3 has me pretty pumped

Just FYI, the game is not based on the Conan movies with Arnold. The game is based on the books and writings of Robert E. Howard, which are much more complex and detailed than those movies you refer to.

Personally, the setting of a game isn't that important to me, I look more for features and gameplay.

If you want to know more about Robert E. Howard click the link. The address comes from the Conan: AoR forums. I suggest you give those site a visit too if you haven't already, what a great bunch of community members.

I was also given a superb resource site by Enarion from the main forums. Here it is: The Hyborian Age.

I had read that and was pleasantly surprised.

I didn't even know there were any Conan books. I saw the movie when I was much younger. (It's been almost 25 years!)

I don't think that many people who play MMOs are going to know anything about Conan except that he's one of the roles Arnold had played before the Terminator and Govenor.

Conan may be a great choice for background and history but it's a poor choice when you're trying to get gamers to relate to your game. FunCom is going to have to spend more time and resources educating people about their game than they would have had to if they had chosen something that more people could relate to.

The game still looks like it's going to be great even if it takes much longer to convince other people to give it a try.

A lot of people actually read fantasy, especially people who umm... ya know play rpg's?  Since Robert E. Howard  is one of the most famous fantasy authors of all-time and practically invented the Sword and Sorcery sub-genre,  I think it's a perfect setting if your looking to create a dark, brutal, and lustful world.

There's a reason why MMOGs have RP servers. It's not because of how popular RP is.

Sorry to break it to you but MMOGs are games that are played by gamers. AoC won't be an exception.

When I read the first part of your post I thought "oh sh!t, this dude is going to get flamed", but glad to see you took the time to read up on the game.Like some others have posted it's not based on the movies, but rather books. So no, there isn't going to be any "I'll be back" emotes.

I am betting this game to be different and fun. Not alot people will try in the beginning, but as soon as word of mouth starts spreading, it will be successful.

Funcom doesnt have many mmo's out there at the current time, so I assume they dont want to screw anything up with their brand new title.

I will be there on launch day though

A few things to take note:

The "Age" is after Conan has become king.  He's old and the kingdom is _not_ united.

The game will be rated "M-for mature".

There are two seperate games.  A single player game and the MMO version.  Both are availble through the title purchase.  The single player mode is lvl 1-20 (I believe).

They are still undecided upon a monthly subscription fee.  This may be the first MMO with a sub fee of 19.99 !!

There are no elves, no faires, no knomes and no dwarves to play.  There are LOTS of deamons that will play golf with your head.

There are group formations which grant tremendous abilities and "buffs".  A player can move within the formation to a certain limit and are completly free to break the formation at will.

The game will be rated M-for Mature!!  Yep, this is not for children.

The art is based 100% upon Frank Frazzeta's wonderful paintings and scketches.

Players will be able to develop their own cities with keeps, castles and fortresses.  Combat will be gruesome and bloody!

Crafting will not be time consuming nor complicated although certain componets which provide a greater result to the end item will be more rare.  Crafting is not possible until lvl 40.

Combat attempts to mimic actual movements and mass. Swinging a huge Axe will show your chartacter actually brace themselves while building momentum for the decapitating swing!

I haven't read anything that suggests FunCom is wanting to charge $20.

Where did FunCom say that they were going to try to charge more?

Ya what he said above. Here is the information I know:

"What has been decided is that although you play on our servers, you will play the SINGLE-PLAYER GAME as if it was offline, without any additional costs other than when you bought the game.

Now If im reading those correctly, there is no 19.99 thing. These are the latest quotes from Interviews, and forum posts. So may I ask were you got your information?

I think the $20 thing is pure speculation.  A twenty dollar price would kill any game at this point.  Maybe by the time AoC is released that won't be the case, but I doubt it.

Dude Age of Conan isn't based off the movie it's based off the books and just FYI Arnold wasn't the only person who played Conan in the movies there was another and also a cartoon sometime ago, if you took time to look the Conan in the wallpaper looks next to nothing like Arnold, and the movies came out AFTER the books, and as far as PR goes the guys at G4 went to Finland or wherever to interview one of the devs of the game so before you start bashing a game you seem to know nothing about Learn To Research.

    Current MMO: Aion
MMO Watch: Warhammer 40k Online, SWToR, GW2.
Played: Planetside, SWG, EQ, EQ2, L2, WoW, RFO, KAL, MxO, Voyage, RO,Vanguard,Tabula Rasa, Horizons, CoH/CoV,, Lotro, FFXI
First MMO: Everquest (Tunare Server, Ronin/Tide Guild)

Actually no, not like Arnold. Conan was a VERY long book series before it was ever considered to be a movie. A very good book series I might add. Maybe you should try a library sometime. ::::02::

What company have many MMO's out?SoE?
  • BountyGregBountyGreg Member Posts: 37
I think the answer would be NCSoft...I might be wrong but they have something like 10 MMOs on their list or so, here a few:

Guildwars, City of Heroes, City of Vilains, Lineage, Lineage II, Auto Assault, the upcoming Tabula Rasa, Aion...

I think there are more, just out of my head.

To get back to the topic:

Age of Conan might not be well advertised, that's a fact, but the more people I talk to, the more really LOVE it.
Many games only had a basic advertising, here Im mostly thinking about SWG in Europe for example. This can kill a game, agreed, but someone said, why advertise 3 years in advance, And I gotta say, right.
I was a fanatic fan of Star Wars, and as SWG was announced, I was HAPPY....but then, one year passed, 2 years, 3 years and I got rally tired to wait, finally I made it into beta, the game got released and I got bored of it in less then 6 months.
Im still an active player in SWG, eventho I just hang out since months, mainly for firiends, but the joy lasted longer as the game wasn't released.

I don't want the same effect in AoC, I read about it a lil bit, watched the video and that's it. I used to buy the Conan comics as I was younger and it's about all I know about this, well the movies too, but I think movies are a bad representation of Books, just gotta read LotR :)

Conan is a known name, at least for the +18 and since ths game is rated M, I think it's a wise choice, if the game would have been called Howard's World, I wouldn't even have looked at it. At my great regret, I didn't get to read the books and probably won't be able to anytime soon either.

Anyway, FunCom has learned a lot with AO and Im sure they won't mess up AoC.

From what I've seen and read, FC have endeavored to development a unique visual style that while acknowledges Frazetta, looks utterly orginal and unique. From what I've read they're drawing more on ancient civilizations and societies rather than the Frazetta look of horned helmets and animal skin loincloths.

True AO had the worst launch ever but it came back doing a complete 180, the game may not be a smash hit but it's doing a helluva lot better than when it first launched.

I love reading Conan books. Great storyline. If this game has half of book's storyline, decent combat and crafting, lots of exploring then this game will be a smashing hit.

I am the type of player where I like to do everything and anything from time to time.

I know AoC because of Frazetta's book cover art. I read all of Howard's books back when they were new. Still love them! Check out my visual of Conan even though the game cannot possibly mimic it. Frank Frazetta's gallery

Actually, your reason for not liking the setting is what I'm banking on for the idiots plagueing WoW being turned off from the game. The less of them playing AoC, the better. Especially the morons quoting the random facts about Chuck Norris.
