No, I can afford to pay for games, in fact I can't get past the mental block that generally in life things are worth what you pay for them.

    So F2P is basically.....worthless.

Exactly, I tend to not engage in f2p mmorpgs since they are bottomless wells. No amount you spend will ever be enough which just shows me to direction of the people behind them and what they will be willing to do in the future to get more. Mobas/BRs/whatever can do f2p because most of them are cosmetics only which I honestly dont care about. Are there mmorpgs that have pulled of f2p well enough? Sure, Tera comes to mind. But the game has artificial progression. The same could be said about WoW/FFXIV as well since everyone is always kept within a range regardless of how long they have been playing and some people are fine with that. I mean, hell, its been tempting for me to jump back into the current state of FFXI since its item progression is still better than 90% of mmorpgs that have came after it (but the co-op play of the game just makes me so sad now).

Rather have commercials some companies are going to drain whatever they get from customers.  There is no reason not to until it stop working.

Preferable ones that mislead consumers with their marketing and advertising not delivering the product and services as originally intended.

Yeah I avoid FTP games with one exception and that is LOTRO  with I got a lifetime sub to in 2007 or so.  It really is free to play as I get enough points each month free to save up and buy the expansions. I sort of feel guilty at times when I play it.

i thought this was leaning towards in game advertising.I could go for a game if it was first good quality and no added costs but used in game advertising.
There is a problem though and big one...what if.
What if the supporter stopped supporting the game, what if advertising stopped, then there is no money coming in,so eventually at some point the game/business would revert to dumpster fires yet again.
Subscriptions are the only legit method but needs to be tweaked to fairness.Ongoing costs are fine but $15 sub fees are NOT paying for costs,it is used as a scummy addition to profit above and beyond already selling the game.

The entire industry ,thanks to a lot of crappy consumers has managed to get us to pay them for their crappy work before it is finished and/or polished. It was only 15 years ago this would never happen, you would lose your business if hoping for free handouts or relying  on a cash shop.

At this point I can say with certainty that if a game does not have a subscription option, the hidden costs make it too expensive to play.

Yes, god forbid developers actually try to turn a decent profit by charging what is still next to nothing compared to most alternative forms of entertainment.

Amen. Worthless or someone else is paying and you are just tagging along. Kinda like going out with your mates to a pub but you won't be drinking cause you got no money. So your experience gets dampen. You still get to socialize but you can't talk as much or as loud as others because you ain't drunk. That's the equivalent of F2P games.

not "completely free" if they want your gpu processing power for their own financial gain. . .

i pay for good games. even f2p games.

bought enough skins in LoL, costumes in TSW or just adds in ESO.
all 3 games are basically free 2 play (not counting DLCs here, which i bought too ofc), but even tho i could have played most of em completely free, i think good work deserves to be payed, and that's why i do it (and because i REALLY wanted those new shoes!)

There are numbers of silly little games that do this, and if I try a silly game and it is taking up way more CPU/GPU than it should, I don't play it anymore.  I'd rather pay $10 than have $20 extra wear on my system components.

    Define "small".
the issue and why it bad and also why it should never even be considered is even if i said it only draws 1% of anyone PC power  as a selling point it would be " subject to change at anytime "   that the part people gloss over when they aspect F2P crap. their not just looking for covering cost/small profit they want money and as much in the shortest time they can get, so at anytime that 1% can be 2,3, 20% or extra " ads " later and would be accepted if you like the game.

mobile gaming showed it possible to fleece a very large market and call it a free game and be very successful, so now everyone trying to join in and strike a balance of been a fair developer charging less then those greedy ones just wanting your money when really their all exploiting you...

also another thing that gets gloss over when f2p is praised, is when they say you can unlock everything overtime. yea after you been grinding the same crap for hours for very small returns. versus  paying for huge rewards  it not hard too see how easy it is to " sell " anything to those with money an little time just wanting to play the game and not grind one stage for hours to move on.

    I have to agree here.

I also have the added baggage about not liking outside businesses having access to my PC, or any portion of it, for any reason. Thus, I forgo any torrent files and get really pissy when F2P MMOs with optional subscriptions (EQ, Wizard101, etc...) decide to open my browser for me and take me to their "PAY US MONEY!" website. It's an old, ingrained paranoia :)

Personally the only modern MMORPG trend that annoys me is the idea that MMOs need to be designed in a way to attract people who don't actually like MMOs. Which to me makes about as much sense as someone trying to figure out a way to get vegetarians to eat at their steakhouse.

The September issue of The Economist was all about it. Here's a link to a paid article, but the free introductory blurb really gives you most of what you need to know:

    https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&source=web&rct=j&url=https://amp.economist.com/technology-quarterly/2018/08/30/how-to-put-bitcoin-into-perspective&ved=2ahUKEwjQ_Zf5z-vhAhUQy1kKHXPqBi8QFjABegQIARAB&usg=AOvVaw09cZZdAhJWlTVZk9anuhf5&ampcf=1

It was the first journalistic dive that came to mind.  If you can pick it up somewhere it was a great issue although now dated.

I'm good on that. I would honestly rather have in game ads on billboards or product placement or some crap. I don't want to have them using my PC for things not related to the game, especially when they could essentially change how much "small" percentage of my graphics card would be. It would be different for each user, some would provide them with a lot more others a lot less.

Nah, I wouldn't play that. Give me a monthly fee.
