How Do You Feel About Genderlocked Classes?

45074507 Member UncommonPosts: 351
And if you're against them, why?

In my experience, most people are against them because they feel that genderlocking reduces character customization without really adding anything to the game. And if that is the case, how would you feel about genderlocked classes if they made sense with the lore and always had male/female 'halves', for example a monk class locked to male and a nun class locked to female that have many common abilities but also several unique abilities to make them feel similar yet different? Would you still prefer to have a single cleric class that combines both their skillsets, or perhaps gender-neutral versions of the 'halves'?

I have no problem with them. I do however think that gender locking should be lore driven.

Personally I understand that it's usually a budget issue.

I prefer to have well animated male or female avatars if both are not a viable option. Same with clothing and customisation.

I don't like gender locking. Why can't a female do the same things as a male, and vice-versa?

The only approval I give to this is when it is definitional. A witch is female. A warlock is male. An Amazon is female. A Priest is male. A Priestess is female. Things like that.

But a warrior or a rogue, for example? Should be guys and gals.

I personally hate it. I like customization, its a huge part of every game for me regardless of the genre. Anything that limits the way i want to create my character sucks.

Gender locking is just as bad as racial locking. Less customization, then you just end up with the same class with a different name X period of time later for the opposite gender while devs make it sound like they are giving you something, but those games are also boring cookie cutter games anyways so they don't even show up on my radar.

They just never made sense to me. I just don't get why this is a thing in Asia.

Just depends on how it's handled.  Mostly they don't, unless the determinations seem utterly arbitrary.

Andre Nortons Witchworld is a good example, but lets be honest most lore in MMO's today has no book/film base and is just made up, I doubt the majority even employ writers today, though years back they did. There was an article on here from an industry insider maybe ten years ago talking about how "now even the tea-boy writes quests".

Because they don't have a problem with it. I also think that "male" and "female" has very strong connotations Men and woman have different expectations and there is more of a feeling of "men should be this but women should be this."

Obviously things change and there are always strides made toward gender equality but in the end "different culture."

I think some people don't truly grasp what "different culture" actually means.

I don't care if an MMO has gender or race locked classes. I like both male and female characters since I'm not sexist or a bigot. But I do see a lot of guys of a certain red that hate playing as a female.
    It's not bigotry or sexism.

In fact I cannot recall a single time when a women (or girl) that I knew was a girl or knew personally ever playing a guy character aside from non optional games like Mario.

I disagree. I prefer a class system and dislike skill trees. I'm old school tho.

I don't like it at all.  I hate playing a game where they racial and gender lock a class.

You want to be a Mage? You have to play the Female Muppet.

If you want to be a Warrior, you have to play the  Angry ManMeat.

It's a big turn off. I can't feel connected to a character unless it's created in a way specific to my imagination, or at least as close to my imagination as I can get.

It's a budget issue.  And a good way for me to tell how much a budget a game has, too (which ends up being a fairly decent albeit not 100% reliable determinant for other factors that will influence whether or not I should bother with a game)

Of course, I primarily play female characters so a game that ends up gender locking my preferred class to male is one I likely won't play unless other aspects of the game really really more than make up for it.  As someone who also prefers summoner classes though, that's rarely a problem.  Most developers for a genderlock game genderlock the summoners to female.

Path of Exile is gender locked and it is not Asian or are we only talking about MMORPGs.

Race locked classes based on lore are ok for me.  Gender locking a class, doesn't make sense to me unless the class is unique to a race that happens to be exclusively male or female.

Totally depends on why it's done. A male Amazon would be weird but it's seldom done for RP reasons. More typically, especially in Korean MMOs that do this routinely, it's for the jiggles.

I prefer gender/race locked classes. It helps with the immersion and the lore. Making all classes available to all races and genders turns into kind of a blend. I am also not a fan of having too many options.

If it is a lore based reason. . go nuts. . otherwise let me pick.  If a knightly order is only male or female in the lore then no problem.  If a mage can only be male or female then I would disagree with that. . (of course it could be lore based).

Then. . blame the lore or have that discussion.  but "fighter" should not be locked etc.
