I don't get it: I download and install trial, then get to the log in screen. Log in. Then, there's a couple of HOURS of updates to download? I can download a gig in about 15 minutes, does that mean the update is 8 gig? I don't think so...
So these guys offer a free trial and I gotta wait 2 hours to play... What kind of first impression is that? lol. For reference, I downloaded the Saga of Ryzom trial and was playing in less than 30 minutes...
The funny part is that the waiting meter is shaped like an xp meter. I guess I am being primed for what is to come?

Forgetting about internet connection speeds for a second, I think the OP has a very good point. It's NOT a good way of welcoming people in the game to require 8 GB (or whatever) of downloads just to run a trial!
I understand that it's a complex game with great graphics, but you'd think the mighty SOE Marketing Department would be able to help make the user's first experience of EQ2 a little easier to get into.
Well, just my 2 cents' worth. Or 2 pence worth, as we'd say over here.

I think of it the opposite. If I download a game and am immediately ready to play, that gives me the impression the game is not very intensive, it's shallow, and there is not much to it.
However, if I download a game then continue to download another massive amount, I would be impressed by the vast amount of content I am getting. I would be looking forward to what I am about to experience.
Of course it would ultimately depend on the actual gameplay.

The trial was ok, but I found it disappointing that I couldn't explore the crafting aspects of the game. Wish they had included that one too. It went off my disk after two days.

It's too bad you based the entire game, with hundreds of zones, thousands of quests, 2 expansions, and 2 adventure packs off the demo version that didn't have crafting. The demo is just the tip of the iceburg to give you a feel for how EQ2 works, the mechanics, and gameplay.
What better way for a game to show itself off than with a free playable demo. Something that not too many other games have. And maybe that's SOE's downfall - they give people a way to see the game for free before investing the cost of a full version. People can be turned off without ever having spent a dime. However, if EQ2 is not for you, that's cool.
Since you found your way to this forum shows that you probably play or have played other MMO's, thus you already have an idea of what you like. And that's cool too. EQ2 is not for everyone. WoW is not for everyone. SWG is not for everyone. Important thing is to play something you like and provides fun!
