Trial and slow updates... what are they thinking?

BoxtripperBoxtripper Member Posts: 26
I don't get it: I download and install trial, then get to the log in screen. Log in. Then, there's a couple of HOURS of updates to download? I can download a gig in about 15 minutes, does that mean the update is 8 gig? I don't think so...

So these guys offer a free trial and I gotta wait 2 hours to play... What kind of first impression is that? lol. For reference, I downloaded the Saga of Ryzom trial and was playing in less than 30 minutes...

The funny part is that the waiting meter is shaped like an xp meter. I guess I am being primed for what is to come? :)

Actually the updates are about 8 GB. EQ2 is usually a 10GB folder.

    Hope you'll enjoy it

I would guess that this is because they changed the newbie island (the trial area) A LOT a few months back so you are downloading all of that content and no its not 8 gigs. being able to download 1 gig in 15minutes doesnt mean you will always see those results there are other factors like server load etc that can slow you down. I downloaded ryzom and it took me forever to patch it, you must have been doing it when very few others were.

But does a trial account really need 8 gigs of updates to see newb island? I am just trying to pass time while waiting... I just think it's a weird way of welcoming people to the game. If I was to make a trial to get people to play my game, I would make it as user friendly as possible....waiting 2 hours to play will surely turn a lot of people away.

Its not 8gb that other guy doesn't know what he is talking about I have the full cient installed and updated plus the desert of flames expansion and my eq2 file is only 5.5gb.

    A GB in 15 minutes?  What's your connection?  With me I have a 2.5Mbps DSL and that's about ... I don't remember.

It's a somewhat restricted university line. But it's still quite fast.

And how on earth do you quote someone on this forum?

you click the quote button above thier post. also your university line will slow down the heavier load it has on it, so if there are a bunch of people downloading stuff atm then your connection will be slower.

Forgetting about internet connection speeds for a second, I think the OP has a very good point. It's NOT a good way of welcoming people in the game to require 8 GB (or whatever) of downloads just to run a trial!

I understand that it's a complex game with great graphics, but you'd think the mighty SOE Marketing Department would be able to help make the user's first experience of EQ2 a little easier to get into.

Well, just my 2 cents' worth. Or 2 pence worth, as we'd say over here.

I think of it the opposite.  If I download a game and am immediately ready to play, that gives me the impression the game is not very intensive, it's shallow, and there is not much to it.

However, if I download a game then continue to download another massive amount, I would be impressed by the vast amount of content I am getting.  I would be looking forward to what I am about to experience.

Of course it would ultimately depend on the actual gameplay.

I downloaded the trial a few days ago. Initial download was like 30 minutes with 5 hours of additional content download (effective time was about 3.5 hrs) which resulted in about 1.8 gigs of space required.

The trial was ok, but I found it disappointing that I couldn't explore the crafting aspects of the game. Wish they had included that one too. It went off my disk after two days.

You can explore the crafting aspect of the game in the trial you just have to go into the basement of that tower in the first area that you spawn in. The raw materials are found all over the island and quite a few recipies are provided to you on the island. Its not very difficult to find there is a npc right next to the crafting entrance that explains crafting to you.

Nope, you get the "thanks for trying EverQuest 2 now buy the real deal"-type pop up when trying to enter it. Would have been a wise choice to include it.

It's too bad you based the entire game, with hundreds of zones, thousands of quests, 2 expansions, and 2 adventure packs off the demo version that didn't have crafting.  The demo is just the tip of the iceburg to give you a feel for how EQ2 works, the mechanics, and gameplay.

What better way for a game to show itself off than with a free playable demo.  Something that not too many other games have.  And maybe that's SOE's downfall - they give people a way to see the game for free before investing the cost of a full version.  People can be turned off without ever having spent a dime.  However, if EQ2 is not for you, that's cool.

Since you found your way to this forum shows that you probably play or have played other MMO's, thus you already have an idea of what you like.  And that's cool too.  EQ2 is not for everyone.   WoW is not for everyone.  SWG is not for everyone.  Important thing is to play something you like and provides fun!
