Okay, before someone chimes in with "DAoC" hear me out.
The type of PvP I like can be summed up in one game: Diablo II. I'm an EX-Diablo II hardcore player who's looking for a MMORPG that has very similar gameplay mechanics as Diablo II. None of this capture the flag/base bullshit, or instanced battleground rubbish, but REAL HARDCORE PVP.(this rules out WoW by default).
Are there any MMORPGs like this? Actually, are there ANY games like this? I played Diablo II for 5+ years and it's time to move on, but to what? I don't know.

Shadowbane is free now...might mean it'll shut down sometime, but as far as I know there has been no official announcement saying that it will.

Guild Wars has good PvP,although i'm sure alot of you will disagree :P
I'm also a former diablo 2 junkie and I only played hardcore as it is the only thing worth playing. I was on USeast hardcore and I a dueler and somewhat Pker (legit though). I was Cryomatrixa or Khellendros or Michaelbolton.
And Diablo 2 hardcore server PvP owns all MMO's in PvP with the exception of EVE and even EVE may not compare to PvP on a hardcore server where one death and you lose everything. I hear guild wars is ideal for people like us.
I was thinking of trying Lineage 2 but probably won't be able to. One thing is, if you're a hardcore diablo 2 player like myself, it's pretty easy to get bored of MMO's. If you can't die, then what;s the point right? But WoW wasn't too bad, just the PvP is okay (sans battlegrounds).
Anyway, just shouting out mainly to an ex-diablo 2 hardcore player like my former self.
Diablo 2 4 life lmao . . .
Cryomatrix
You can see my sci-fi/WW2 book recommendations.
Former UO player searching for something even remotely close to what UO was...
I've tried WoW and there's no doubt that it's a very well-made game, but it's just not my kind of thing. I don't like Battlegrounds and the PvP/PvE is just too boring for me. Mainly because there's no real consequences for dying; you don't lose anything but time when you die in WoW. Anyone can hit the level 60 cap for WoW. You can hit 60 and still not know how the hell to play your class - that's how undemanding it is.
*sigh* I guess what I'm asking for is Diablo III.
the graphics SUCK, but any class can beat the other, and a lvl 100 player can beat a lvl 150 player if he's got more skills, so it's not all based on reaching the max lvl cap ^^ (in fact there is no lvl cap afaik, when I last played it like 1 year ago, the highest person was around lvl 200 and that took her (yes, it was a girl :P) over 1 year to accomplish)
also when you die you 10% of your total exp, skills and magic lvl. And there is also a 10% chance for everyone one of your equipment slots that the EQ in it will also drop (it can be looted from your corpse, by you or anyone else that might get there first :P)
~~ The one and only from the sundsvall elite ~~
In my order.I like big battles, seiges, intresting combat and some penalty for losing(not all out looting).
So its subjective to taste when it comes to pvp.So this is my order for pvping in a mmorpg.
1)DAoC.Hands down the best by a mile
2)EQ2
3)lineage 2
3)GW
4)UO .old version
5)shadowbane
6)WoW
But since you want real hardcore then i suggest shadowbane for you.
-id say Runescape :P as bad as the graphics and all the pvp in the game is much better then any game
-guild wars has nice pvp but its a little limited
If you like mass PvP I would go with RF Online, since you're a hardcore player you probably wouldn't mind the grind at the start. It's kinda weird at the start, but once you get lvl 30+ and can actually do damage in the Chip Wars it's hella fun.
Let's see, if you enjoy the 1v1 pker type game I would probably suggest a non-mmorpg. Ever heard of NeverWinter Nights? well yeah, there's a server up atm called Bastions of War, i'm 100% sure you'll like the 20 vs 20 servers they're running. It's not really group vs group PvP because everyone goes off by themselves etc, it'll be challenging for you aswell, unlike WoW was.
Just my 2c!

Do not hate it, but instead embrace the diversity.
Shadowbane is the Best PvP MMO ever. to date
However on may 15 Wolfpack Studios, the people behind the game, are closing their doors. There hasn't been an official anouncement yet about the future of Shadowbane and it has been free to play for sometime now.
If ya can try it out . may be the last time ya get to play a real no holds barred PvP game for a while.
Saga of Ryzom has very little PvP, but it means everything in there when you actually do PvP. Don't expect random ganking...but yes, some PKer will be present...they are just extremely unlikely to be encountered except in the harvesting area...
CoV/CoH have a very funny if completely weird PvP, they are screwing some of the best PvE games to turn it into a PvP game, really weird...just like Stateman I guess. But this is about bases defence and not much consequences, yet too much...weird really.
