EA's Vice President of Legal Kerry Hopkins has been testifying in front of the United Kingdom's Digital, Culture, Media & Sport Committee on the issue of microtransactions. When asked about "lootboxes", Hopkins came up with a new and quite novel name for them: "Surprise mechanics." "Well, first, we don't call them lootboxes. We look at them as surprise mechanics...this is something people enjoy. They enjoy surprises."

I don't even understand - why would they defend these boxes? It's difficult to believe they are getting substantial income from the boxes.

But they are earning substantial income from these.....These things always contain stuff that doesn't sell well individually mixed with 1-2 items that are more sought. They are essentially selling more stuff that is less desired because people want the more desired item. That is honestly all these things are for.
