EA's Vice President of Legal Kerry Hopkins has been testifying in front of the United Kingdom's Digital, Culture, Media & Sport Committee on the issue of microtransactions. When asked about "lootboxes", Hopkins came up with a new and quite novel name for them: "Surprise mechanics." "Well, first, we don't call them lootboxes. We look at them as surprise mechanics...this is something people enjoy. They enjoy surprises."

    Surprise - 1. an unexpected or astonishing event, fact, or thing. Example: "The announcement was a complete surprise."

    Mechanics - 2. the machinery or working parts of something. Example: "He looks at the mechanics of a car before the bodywork."

    Those sound like great additions to a product!!!

    To be fair EA has the most uninspiring boxes in the industry - either items are bland (like in recent Star Wars Battlefront) or there is way too much useless crap in them (Mass Effect Andromeda).

    I don't even understand - why would they defend these boxes? It's difficult to believe they are getting substantial income from the boxes.

    But they are earning substantial income from these.....These things always contain stuff that doesn't sell well individually mixed with 1-2 items that are more sought. They are essentially selling more stuff that is less desired because people want the more desired item. That is honestly all these things are for.

    You kill a boss with a mean looking sword, you want that sword badly you kill the boss, and then the drop reward came and gave you turd, the boss last word "Surprise!" and you repeat that 100 more times and see people "enjoy that" I hated it when it was free then they add the word "payment". I probably need to start throwing spears at this ea guy.

    I think you forgot how corporations can and do influence laws via lobby groups far more than they should be able to.  Just look at the NN hand outs.. lol

    yes politicians are so naive, bad coporations preying on these inocent people who jsut wanted to help

    again saying corporation buy politicians to push laws, don't make then the lesser evil, only the big one, not politicians, not way to corps buy then, no corps you are still supporting politicians who push laws to they benefit, plus politicians will punish corps if they don't follow what they want

    Meeting duration 1 minute including refreshments.

    I just wonder what other descriptions where discarded before deciding on this ridiculousness.

    EA is a bloodsucking trash of a company and with leadership like this you can see why. I have no issue with them making money I am happy to pay $65 or whatever for one of their games but it never ends I rember the year they put adds in Madden and still charged full price
