The first closed beta testers have been invited to try out the upcoming GoG Galaxy 2.0 update. Galaxy 2.0 is bringing a wide array of changes to the launcher including the ability for users to import multiple game libraries and friends lists into the platform. Players will be able to see all of their games and friends regardless of whether on PC or console and Galaxy 2.0 can be used to launch any PC game.

While I see the limitations -- i.e. launching another platform when launching a PC game from Galaxy -- I like the concept and I give them a lot of credit for doing SOMETHING while Epic and Steam duke it out in the corner. :D

I'll give it a try when it launches. :)

Sounds very similar to Raptr and other like apps that used to be around (with the new addition of launching games too).

I miss Raptr and was sad when they dropped support for console tracking.

Looking forward to trying this out.

I've been using steam to launch UPlay, Blizzard, Origin, and GoG games for years now, because the Steam Controller requires it. Yes, Saint Gabe and Valve require exclusive use of their clijent to use their hardware. And it generally requires 3rd party software to work properly, because the clients are not meant to play well together.

Even now, your Epic store games can be launched from Steam. Why is the GoG Galaxy feature set so remarkable? Because it automates importing them, or the additional social features? Because if wager most people don't even use those parts of a digital store front.

As much as everyone likes to rally behind Steam, it's actually GoG that does the most good for the gamer and represents the most positive change for the industry.

If you actually give a shit about "the superior platform," that is GoG by a country mile.

Epic showers/bribes users with a deluge of free games even if they haven't spent a dime on its platform (seriously, it's fucking great in that singular regard). GoG is even better with its genuine push towards DRM free games and pro consumer practices. Valve, the owner of the "superior platform," just sits back and does nothing for you while raking in a 30% tax on an entire industry.

I've been using GoG's client a lot more recently as I've been on an FMV point and click adventure kick, and I really wouldn't mind being able to utilize this platform instead of Steam and the alternatives (even if it means launching the games through those clients still). I enjoyed having all my friends lists linked on Raptr and Xfire back in the day, so I'm hoping that feature is similar.

You all game on the DRM platform. How DRM free do you really think you are? Stop fooling yourselves.
Not sure that's entirely true as the GoG Galaxy client is optional:
GOG Galaxy is fully optional because you don’t need it to play games on GOG.com. If you want to, you can simply download your game via your browser, install it manually, and launch it offline, just like we've always done it on GOG.com. If you decide to use GOG Galaxy for some aspects of the convenience, you can still switch to offline mode at whim and play your games. Optional also means that all features in GOG Galaxy can be turned off. Not a fan of achievements or auto-updates? No problem, they're extras.

To me that sounds like I can use GoG as a storefront/distributor, but do not need to use them as a platform, which is where I would see them as a form of DRM, in the way I would with Steam or Epic.

You can't multiplayer without Galaxy, especially cross platform.

Here's the DRM. https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/ Everyone thinks of DRM as some add-on client, and those are, but the entire OS is built on it.
That's fair. I use GoG for a lot of older games that don't even have multiplayer, so not something I really considered.

I thought you were speaking about the various store fronts as DRM since the thread was based on an article about the Galaxy client. Re-reading it with your comment about the OS; I now understand what you were saying a bit better.

I like how GOG is quietly improving their platform while steam and epic battle it out
