How is this game, that's a pretty broad question...

Fun game. It's old, but aged well. Has plenty of content, or a fast route to the level cap. Scarce on new content (*) but really active on events, etc.
(*) this new episodic storyline caught everyone by surprise
Enough stuff to do at the cap. Massive cosmetic system, mounted combat, a mild version of housing. Pretty easy and straightforward (thus also quite meaningless) crafting after the revamp.
Almost exclusively PvE, most pvp activities are dead (Onslaught is maybe the exception, and the occasional duels). Fairly small but active and friendly playerbase.
One of the best character building systems out there, but which is behind a paywall, and there's no subscription anymore. For free you can only have Archetypes (pre-built "classes").
It's F2P, so if "never tried before", give it a look.

I believe that's the most I can do without specifics...

The first mission was pretty short, but I'm interesting in seeing how the rest will follow up on what it presented. I was pleasantly surprised by this effort to offer something new, and hope it continues with more episodes down the line.

It was not good to begin with, and it hasn't aged well.

    The user interface is garbage.

It's a superhero game with lootable equipment that you are required to keep, wear, and upgrade. (This is totally stupid in a superhero game.)

Combat is floaty and bad even though the game has been out for a decade.

The power sets are weird and convoluted, with a lot of extremely abstract effects. This leads to a situation where the lackluster visuals cannot possibly tell you what's actually going on when someone uses a power.

I'm sure the dedicated community is very nice, but I can't imagine why they are sticking with Champions when there is a much better superhero game that is also free.

Depends on what you like, really, and how you like it.

It has some features missing from other superhero MMORPGs that allow it to better mimic the genre, such as the aforementioned functional vehicles, and a system that lets you design your own nemesis to randomly plague you. On the other hand, it has an aesthetic many fans of the genre dislike, and stories that frequently reach the camp level of the 60's Batman TV show.

The highlight of the game, by far, is the freeform system, that allows you to customize your character by cherry picking desired abilities from every power set in the game. This comes at a cost however. One must have a freeform character slot to do so, and those clock in at about $30 US each normally, with a slight discount for a bundle of three.

It also has the best customization for character costume in the superhero MMORPG genre, compared to games both present and past. But, to best benefit from that system you need a wide assortment of costume parts, many of which are in the cash shop... of course.

It is a tab-target game, but feels more active than is typical. The use of many attack abilities are regulated by means other than cooldown, and one can block to reduce damage at their whim.

Also, powers function in a variety of ways which spices things up a bit. Attacks for example come in the form of clicks, charge ups and maintains.

Click powers as is usual activate when you click the related button or key. Sometimes, these will also be combo powers, where a more powerful strike will occur every third attack made.

Charge ups build in intensity the longer you hold down the related key, and activate when it is released. Charging them fully also actives them. Often, different levels of charge come with different secondary effects. The longer the charge, the more energy the ability costs.

Maintains start dealing damage immediately, and continue to do so long as the related key is pressed. You can maintain the attack until the duration expires or you run out of energy. If you have energy remaining at the end of a maintain, you can immediately resume it.

So, for tab-target, it has a fair bit of diversity.

Just so you know, by default it has one of those annoying text boxes that pop up in the middle of the screen when someone gets something good out of a lockbox.

However, you can rearrange the screen elements so that box is mostly hidden from sight, by placing it behind the map in the upper right corner of the screen, essentially eliminating the distraction.

To access this option, click on the stylized C on the lower left of the map border, and select Rearrange from the menu.

The box that needs to be moved is called Notifications.

[...] and stories that frequently reach the camp level of the 60's Batman TV show. [...]
Nice summary, just an update to that quoted part: it's intentional.
Part of the system's charm, so to speak.

When Marvel has backed out of the project, and Cryptic sided with Champions, they got the world with it, not just the free character design. Which is a good thing, at least if you like campy fun... Champions is like a tongue-in-cheek mock of the entire genre, with resembling characters and event from all the other franchises, big (Marvel/DC) and indie alike.

Sure, it's up to taste, I personally love the tone of the game, but I can see how someone without playing the books and familiar only with the recent age of comics might find it campy.

Easy to forget that Champions is almost 40 years old now... and while it got several updates, those usually just refined the systems. The world was continued as the time went on, but the roots are still the same, early '80s alternate Earth with superheroes roaming around.

A short but great history/review of the books: https://youtu.be/X7BZAisUUWY
