Amazon Game Studios has announced a collaborative effort with Leyou to bring a new free-to-play MMOG based on The Lord of the Rings to both PC and console at an indeterminate future. There were hints about the forthcoming game during Leyou's September 2018 "business announcement" where a subsidiary publishing arm, Athlon Games, was revealed. Amazon will be working cooperatively with Athlon in the development of the Lord of the Rings title.

    This is very exciting -- I wish it was one of those announcements of a game that is nearly done and will be out in a year or two instead of 5+, which is more likely. :)

    This does not bode well for Lotro. I remember that "coincidently" SWG shut in the same year SWtOR started, that CoH closed three years after Champions Online started.

    However, just because they say it is a MMO, a MMOG in fact (notice that not a MMORPG) does not mean it will really be a MMO. After all some people think Warframe can be called a MMO so we shall see. And it is going to be a game as a service, so no better that Lotro for monetarisation, maybe worse.

    That's why I'll believe it when I see it.

    And "for some reason" I STRONGLY suspect that if the game actually sees the light of day it won't be what a certain number of players believe it should be and there will be much wailing and gnashing of teeth a la Star Wars the Old Republic.

    Wonderful news, it is about time.

    LOTRO has been good but it is not ageing well, it is time to give Middle-earth a much needed boost, and a new game engine. I am a huge Tolkien's fan, and I am a gamer so this is really exciting.

    I assume the game will be a tie in to the TV show with the launch date planned around that. Which would suggest a quicker launch. And if they have a clear vision of what they want and spend the money it should be possible to deliver an "initial something" quicker (e.g. Destiny took c. 2.5 years after the money was sorted - albeit from an established team but still). Remains to be seen of course.

    As a self proclaimed weathered mmo veteran, I struggle to be anything but jaded when reading about new releases - sadly this one is no different. That said my zippo-esque flame of hope is still flickering away in the darkness, ready to cast light on any semblance of an mmo that makes it way through the mire, be it from asia or otherwise. :D

    Seems obvious that it will tie into the Amazon LOTR TV series.

    How nice to see a new game that is not mobile, crowd funded, or battle royale.

    We can also probably rule out a MOBA. It's become blatantly obvious that there is only room for three big players in that genre (LoL, DotA, Smite). 

    Plus, there was already a LotR moba and it flopped fast.

    Not a very new announcement, this was out what? 4? 6? months ago. Big deal. The first announcement talked of 'seeing people's and place's never seen before' which would put it outside normal LotR area's and this one really makes it seem tied to the new Amazon show which is pre-LotRO period.




    Soo are they going to shut down the current Lotro?

     Probably not. As we've seen with DDO and Neverwinter; 2 games can be licensed from the same company and cover the same subject matter.

    You'd have to think companies learned from Lucas's mistake when he killed 1 money making game to support another, when he could have just let both run since they didn't cover the same 'time period'.

    That's my thought as well. 

    Just because they say it's a "MMOG" doesn't mean it's going to be an open world game experience. It's very possible it will be so different that it won't really affect Lord of the Rings Online.

    But first it has to launch so "we'll see."

    SWG was shutdown because it wasn't profitable, same for CoH. Your "conspiracy theory" idea is even crazier with CoH considering NCSoft has nothing to do with Champions Online, the game is its own IP and Cryptic were out of the picture on CoH before they purchased the Champions IP to make Champions Online.

    That also means, that LOTRO's revenues are the concern for its survivability and not other studios making similar themed games.

    I will agree though that it's very doubtful this F2P LoTR game is going to be a proper MMORPG as neither Amazon nor Lehou seems interested in that market.
