One of the most frustrating aspects of a digital card game is ownership. With a paper CCG you simply don’t have this issue. You buy a card, you own said card. However, with games such as Magic Arena, Hearthstone and more, digital card ownership is somewhat an undefined aspect of the collectible formula.

Why is this even news? Magic the Gathering Online, released in 2002, already is a digital CCG card with real world value to it. They mentioned MTG Arena, yet conveniently left out MTG:O which already accomplished everything this new CCG is trying to be.

What you're missing is this new game aims to be a great way to launder money and hopefully inflate their bitcoin wallets which are no doubt inflated with Ethereum. When it becomes more economical to mine the currency underlying your cards than it is to develop your actual game, you're going to have a bit of a conflict there.

The reason other games moved away from this is it eliminated the hacking of accounts.

If this game becomes very successful, then a whole industry of people hacking accounts for this game will arise, just like it did with other games where resources are able to be traded to other players.

Just look at what happened with Fortnite.

    Bad idea, nice artwork though.
In other news the rogue like card game Griftlands is in alpha, and pretty damn good.

I love card games and I'm a big fan of games that have items with real marketplace value. Now can they pull off both, fingers crossed. I'll be watching this one closely, looks like my kind of game.

MTG:O cards do not have real world value inside the game, it has real world value on the outside and you have to do all trading for real money through trading websites that have nothing to do with the game. It also has a very small playerbase now a days, as all of the alternatives you can earn cards without spending as much as a physical card game.

But I'm not backing up this card game, as I think it's stupid to attach something as volatile as cryptocurrency to a digital card game.

Thanks for all the comments, so far.

I'm Marcelo, with the SkyWeaver team. We know that one of the major hurdles we have ahead with the gaming community is the distrust terms such as 'cryptocurrency' and 'blockchain' generate.

Our idea is pretty simple, actually: to create a really competent card game using new tech that can bring ownership to players, and that can capitalize on what blockchain can do for gaming in terms of long-term ownership, verifiability, etc.

We aim to have a transparent and collaborative relationship with our players and other developers. Come check us out in our Discord if you want to know more, or if you have feedback/criticism.

Ethereum is the reason why video card prices were crazy for about a year. So basically, Ethereum needs to die. And all of the other mined cryptocurrencies, too. (I'm fine with non-mined cryptocurrencies.)

At least it look like a genuinely new game, tho.

Digital card games are the absolute lowest common denominator of games, requiring the least amount of animation/design work and having a built in framework for pay to win microtransactions.

They barely even constitute video games.

Eh, it's free to play, so it's not as if it will cost me anything to check it out. Plus, I can play on Linux by the looks of it.

If nothing else, it will be interesting to watch how it all pans out.

What an incredible concept. I can’t wait to see how Skyweaver affects the gaming industry. Spending money on in-game items that you don’t actually own will seem like absolute nonsense. The ability to transfer value between the gaming world and real life seems like a basic gamer right, but right now it isn’t. This is revolutionary.

I have always wanted to play these card games but after watching a video or two I got deflated and rather overwhelmed and decided it was all too difficult. Today for some bizarre reason I decided to download Hearthstone and try it and refused to watch any Youtubes video and I was rather charmingly surprised by how easy it was to get into the game. My final battle the beginner one was against Illidan Stormrage and of course he started off with his signature phrase and I was a little thrilled when I beat him.

Naturally I don't imagine I will get very good at it since playing against real players will probably do me in. Nevertheless I am suddenly interested in this genre and goodness what a lot games there are. My poor wallet is practically cringing and alarmed at the thought of being emptied.
