In August of 2015 ArenaNet did something unexpected. They made the core Guild Wars 2 campaign free to play to anyone interested in giving the game a try. For a series that has been predominantly buy to play, this was an interesting move that still continues to this day.

There was nothing like the starter experience, not to mention the personal story is decent and you meet some very interesting life long NPC friends.

Ended up leveling up every class at the start but after they started instant leveling and leveling strolls have not went through the basic leveling process since.

Bag space is handled decently and I liked the early drops of bags and the availability of bags in the auction house that help a lot as well as being able to buy and sell gear quickly as you level. Mostly a painless process at the start, but constantly seeing players with mounts would make it hard to wait for new players.

I really like gw2 leveling! I wish there was a pristine server without mounts and elites that have so much power creep and the mobs are harder to deal with.

I still jump on my second account that has no expansions...it is still fun to play!

It's best to treat the free option, as a trial. Play it for a while, and if you like what you see, buy at least one of the expansions.

Is anything free worth it? A GaaS will teach you how little "free" is worth very quickly.

Great article. Bag space is one if those things that should never be behind a paywall imo. It just seethes greed and predatory sales. I get that companies think they can make more money by asking players to pay for “necessary” things that have been standard for decades but it looks really really bad from my perspective and is one of the main reasons f2p has such a poor reputation.

Well you can still craft bag space as you level up crafting you can craft bigger bag space.

The core game is still the best part of the game. The expansions are a necessary evil for MMO's. I jump in the game once in awhile atm leveling a Necro. But being a player from launch I get a lot of leveling items that I stash in the bank. And I just had my account birthday ingame so the gifts are insane. But it's fun going back to those old zones and grabbing all the quest. I forgot how fun that was. So now I'm just doing the overland stuff and story quest. It's like with swtor as the world and class stories are the best part of the game now.

"simply buying Path of Fire won’t net them a mount immediately"

You do the first PoF mission and you get a mount. Getting the first mount has nothing to do with the mastery system. I'd say that was pretty immediate. HoT's Gliding needs a mastery point, not the Raptor.

Not a paywall when you can convert gold to gems, I unlocked all the bag spaces on 13 characters in around a month.

It wasn't harder at the beginning, but I did find the story somewhat interesting... so I think the base game is probably worth playing through for that.

I do like the way they handle quests while leveling.  They just automatically pop-up and you do the objectives, then you get XP.  Pretty good map system. The combat is fun although I hate the dodge fests it perpetuates.

    Group PvE is pretty poor.

Worth playing through the base (free) game, at least, IMO...

Not the most optimized game client.  A lot of FPS-sucking, superfluous graphical effects.  Turn down the shadows unless you have a really high end GPU, esp. if you want consistent high framerates (75-120+ FPS).

I think leveling in GW2 is actually more fun than leveling in WoW or [esp.] FFXIV.  The Story doesn't feel like so much of a bottleneck (comp. to FFXIV, for example) so you don't start hating it after a while.

It's more similar to ESO, in that respect, except the combat is a bit more exciting... so it feels a lot more fluid to play than ESO.

Do hate the lack of trinity/defined roles in the game, and the Elite Specializations are basically a character reroll for some classes.  So I stopped playing shortly after HoT launch (did buy it, didn't like it).

Honestly couldn't even bring myself to fully level up 1 character in this game when it came out. Other than dynamic events (which got stale after a while), the game was a huge disappointment to me in almost every area.

Tried 3x and each time i wanted to logout by the 10th minute. It is just not designed the way i want a mmorpg to be designed.Pretty much like i felt with Wow,both games did not offer me anything i liked, meaning exactly that, not one single system was good enough.
TESO was worse,10 minutes the first time and i never went back.

SWTOR i stuck around too long,it was very boring to me ,in the end i knew i would also never go back. However fast forward a few years and i did actually go back, about 15 minutes and i deleted it.

The bigger picture, mmorpg's have been developed terribly, very simple lazy efforts.
The only one that felt like a lot of effort went into it was FFXIV but a few systems turned me off and instance gaming along with item levels really turns me off even more.
SO what is left...BDO,yep own that, played from day 1,terrible game down to the point of goofy silly ideas like flips and button mashing combos but there was way more wrong with the game than a few things,a total mess of game design.

An even bigger picture, mmor[g's are dead, nobody is willing to put in the effort to make a great one.NOBODY,so i'll play some single player games and Atlas until a developer gets serious and passionate about mmorpg's.

I was just on this game a few hours ago and can tell you the population was surprisingly heavy.  I was in the level 70 area near the ruins of orr and also jumped onto to another toon in ROF expansion.  In both instances many people were around to do group content, a few times I actually didn't get there in time to participate.

I am having fun on a core account, I bought it on sale a long while ago but never really played, and my wife and son are having great fun on f2p accounts.

That said we will be getting both expansions soonish as there very likely to be good sales on them in the august anniversary sale..at least I hope so as I am not paying full amount for 2 expacksx3

As for population it's quite healthy.

The base game alone provides a ridiculous amount of entertainment at no obligatory cost for those that enjoy the style of play it provides, without constantly telling them just how much more they could have it they coughed up a few dollars.

As such, it has ample worth.

I get that MMOs currently are stale but can we stop with the whole MMOs are dead thing? There are more people playing MMOs today than back in the day, so relax.

Would you be able to provide links to specific numbers, say concurrent logins, daily and monthly, or perhaps patreon/subscriptions to support your position? My guess is no.

Guess again, and that just FFXIV

this game alone has more subs/people playing and most mmos back in the day combined, Common sense is not a super power but keep crying about MMOs being dead.

Funny, you said pretty much the same thing as this other guy, but he was slagged on while you are upvoted,  must be your cult of personality. ;)

In the end almost anything free is worth about what you paid for it, nothing, same thing here.
