I browse this forum and look at all of the games that are currently released and cant seem to find one that occupies my time like an old game I used to play. The game I used to play had a hold over me not unlike that of a crack addict looking for his next fix. It was so bad that I not only paid for 1 account but 9.
So, on to the question of what I am looking for in an MMORPG and the list goes something like this:
1.) Huge Fluid World – Not Instanced Based.
2.) Many Races to choose from.
3.) Advanced Customization ability from appearance to stats. (Some people could care less about this feature but imho it makes the game that much more rich and defined to be able to separate yourself as an individual.)
4.) The ability to Craft, not just point and click mind numbing grind but to set yourself apart from others because of skill and knowledge. For instance, acquiring better resources and experimenting to make a better product.
5.) Skill Based. Without diversity the game cannot hold my interest. The ability to mix and match skills and change up your current template to try other things if you get bored.I’m so very tired of the l33t kiddie games. “I have a level 60 Paladin that totally pwns you in PvP. Blah!!
6.) PvP – Not a huge fan of PvP but I think it needs to be implemented into the game. I think it should be a consensual issue or go to an area that you know to be a PvP zone if you want to do this type of fighting.
7.) Content. The introduction of new content is not only needed but a refreshing change. Quests are good but shouldn’t be made mandatory to advance. Special events are always a huge crowd grabber and make for a more enjoyable experience.
8.) Mounts. Depending on the genre of game, if you have a huge fluid world you have to have an easier way to get around on it be it from motorized vehicles or creatures. My personal preference would be an animal of some sort.
9.) Player Housing.
10.) Player Run Economy.
You know all of those things sound great and to have them all combined in one game would be awesome. I know what most of you are thinking though. I want Pre-CU. Yes I want the same thing but I have lost hope and spent tons of money on just about every new mmorpg on the market today. Cant seem to find any one game that combines the total package. If anyone runs across one, please send me a private message. I might as well add it to the list of games I have tried and who knows maybe it will be the ultimate replacement. I know I could have put one more stipulation onto the top things I want most out of an mmorpg and that would be to have a sci-fi mmo but I know thats asking for way to much since the flavor of the day appears to be fantasy.

I want a good questing system. I am sick of the same old formula, get quest, go to easily identifed place, kill/deliver, return.
I want a system that gives you several options on how to finish the quest. Depending on the choices made, you either fail the quest, have different encounters, receive different rewards if any.
Example:
Talk to NPC A, he is in a business of selling widgets but is having a tough time. A competitor (NPC somehow has managed to find a cheaper way of producing widgets and is underpricing him. NPC A wants your help.
During the conversation, you can suggest means of helping him. Espionage (find out how NPC B is making his widgets cheaper), Intimidation (ala godfather), or Murder (just off NPC .
Espionage: You go to NPC B, and try to trick him into telling you how he makes widgets. There should be a possibility of failure, none of the keep choosing different options until you find the right combination.
Intimidation: Much like the espionage, except that you have different options, including finding out that he has a favorite cu pa, of which you could then find, kill, get head and deliver said head to NPC B.
Murder: Obvious
Hidden Option: Go to NPC B and tell him that NPC A is offering contracts on NPC B's life. Offer to help out NPC B.
These quests should be one time only shots. Therefore you would have to use other alts if you want to collect all the different rewards.
Simple. Even wth all the bugs, I want everything the pre-CU Star Wars Galaxies offered (publish #8).
I don't want quests. Quests are fine for occasional diversion (like the Emperor's Retreat), but when they are an integral part of the game, they get boring for those of us who are not "power levelers". I want the choice of mixing and matching 32 professions and grinding the particular aspects of each to level them. I don't want to quest for my XP.
I want a few instances to spice up the game (like the Corvette), but not everywhere you turn.
I want to experience the aspects of professions, not simply use them as a means to an end. I want to hunt and tame creatures, to have them accompany me, to train them. I don't want to run around looking for the "uber" creature just to use as a tank to get me on a leaderboard.
I want to craft weapons. I want to hunt for the choicest materials. I want to harvest them. I want to combine them into components that bump the damage level up 10, 20 points on the weapons I craft. I want to sell those weapons, and I want people to want to buy them. I don't want f*cking "loot drops", bunnies carrying submachine guns and Storm Troopers dropping groceries.
I don't want to see Jedi. Jedi aren't supposed to be around. They're supposed to be legendary and (supposedly) extinct. They're are supposed to be in hiding.

As ye SOE, so shall ye weep.
I like the sandbox type of games where it is open ended, something to do 24/7. Quests galore, intricate crafting system which will give those who put the time and effort into it items better than what can be looted.
Speaking of quests , I want them complex, in-depth and lengthy with rewards commensurate with risk. Also I don't want to be held by the hand doing the quests with some magic exclamation point or question mark floating over an NPC's head or any other non immersive distraction.
Large world or worlds to explore with variations in geography, culture, and lore. A story that goes with the game that actually is well thought out and makes sense instead of having mobs , structures, NPC's occupying space just for the sake of filling that area up.
Political intrigue and factions that make sense. Side with the wrong faction could effect your business, where and where you can't go at the time, who will help you and who won't. And all this could change month by month in relation to what is happening in game with the different races/cultures ETC.
I agree Vexin its like beating a dead horse and I would truely love to have the old game back but I dont think its going to happen. Many $$$ later after having tried just about everything out there I just have to wonder.......is it so hard to put those types of things into another game. I think I would play it even if it wasnt sci-fi however sci-fi would be my first choice.
A lot of games out there are designs that were purely stories that have never been seen before unlike STO, SWG or the Matrix for instance. I would rather it be Star Wars but what about Battlestar Galactica if it has to be something that has been made for television or theater.
I guess the point of the thread was to find out what it is that everyone really wants in an mmorpg as far as how the game is played. I just hope that all those items and the comments that you made regarding quests can be implemented to a new and upcoming game.
I too would love another sandbox style game and I have to agree with you about the question marks etc. Some people actually like to figure things out and not be spoon fed content, it is imho what makes for a really good game.
After CU I looked for a replacement before ultimately coming back for a short time before the NGE hit. The game I played was kind of like a sandbox style game and that is why I tried it out even if it was fantasy based. The game was Horizons and one of the things that always bugged me about it was the fact that the deers in the game had a big red sign over their head that said "DEER"
Right now I have been trying out Seed but it was released way to early as the developers even stated but its getting really boring. The only thing that is coming out within the next couple of weeks appears to be Dark and Light. I know a lot of people from SWG were waiting on that one to come out also so I will give it a shot.
Yeah even with all the bad press D&L seems to be getting I will be giving it a go as well. Not sure if I will ever truly find that 1 game again that catered to 80% of what I wanted from an MMoRPG. Heroes Journey looks interesting as well.
Seems every day I get on here and look another new MMoRPG in the works is announced. I even seen where Horizons original creator has announced he and his new team will be or are currently making one. The original Horizons concept was pretty ambitious when he was with Artifact Entertainment but we all know that after he left what was released wasn't the game he remotely came close to envisioning.
Heheh I totally forgot about the nametags above the critters in Horizons.
That effectively killed the community, the game and the hype in under two weeks.
Bad press in that case is sadly well deserved.
May I ask why you choose the SWG forum rather than the general forum of the server?
You want likemind peoples? You want SoE? You want Star Wars?
I am wondering, because I didn't 'understand' your reasons but I am pretty sure it is important to you.

Well having been a former SWG player and having looked at several other games trying to find a replacement, I felt that posting here to get exactely what like minded people were looking for as well would help me understand the mmo community better. You see there were several things in SWG that I loved and would want all of it including PvP which as I said in the original post, I dont really care for but feel its needed.
What I wanted to see from this post is exactely what concepts and ideas former SWG players were looking for in a replacement game. Are they only looking for fighting or do they want all aspects of a game long gone? It seems the mentality in other games such as WoW (and I hate to use this as an example because everyone wants to immediately compare this game) but the theme seems to be moving to instanced, level based hack and slash with no depth.
I know there are enough of us out there that want something more, something with depth but are the numbers enough to have a company produce another sandbox style game.

Well, WoW is the game that the majority of MMORPG players have in common, so that is why most people make comparisons to WoW. Guess I am truly a minority when it comes to MMORPGs, because I have never been interested in playing WoW.
