I really doubt it, it would be a very bad move, some measures in the client? probably not, but it's not impossible. A rootkit? impossible, since a rootkit is a resident program that hides in the operating system, it would made no sense to use something like that to prevent cheating.
BTW Sigil is the owner of the IP not SOE. SOE is the owner of the server operation, marketing, distribution and technical support.
If they decide to install a rootkit or something like that, Sigil would be the one to blame and not SOE.

Oh, that may be right. I'm not completely sure what the difference is between a rootkit and the standard protection MMOs use... like WoW's defender (I think that's the name of the program that checks for cheats).
I just heard that Sony used rootkits to protect their IP and figured they might use it in their games, too.
If you are that parinoid about a rootkit just download Rootkit Revealer
Run it once before you install it and once after you install it and see if thier is a difference, but I personally would only worry about a rootkit from an Audio CD. Don't have to really worry about piracy with online games since you need a specific one time key to play.

im assuming you are worried about this because of the news regarding the PS3? where the system actually lightly overwrites the game disc after reading it, erasing the game's product key and without this key the system wont load the game?
seems sony has been trying to totally stop any form of sharing or piracy ... they have new tech foe the gaming console .. their music cd's .. and now rootkits on their pc games ..

Sony DOES NOT have rootkits on their games. No wonder these dumb rumors get started so easy, morons like you here someone ASK if they do, and then try to pass that on saying that they do.
Leave these forums, you aren't even gonna play this game.
btw seriously how old are you? I have a guess, for your sake, it better be in the ballpark.
JMoney you have followed me around every single post i have made and have been attacking me .. and reporting me .. im going to report you now every time you post under me calling me names and trying to bait me into a fight ....
and yes the PS3 games will have a " hard rootkit" which works differently than soft rootkits ( like what microsoft uses to determine whether its windows resgitration keys are valid or not, in case you arent aware of this the M$ rootkit has been uploaded to every PC which has updated their windows this month) ....
as for sony music .. read up on the new security measures they are implementing ...
as for sony PC games again read up on sony's position with the ps3 and the " inability to play rental games on the ps3" and then read about their statements regarding the future of their PC games and you will see ...
i have held my tongue and refused to play your game of insulting behavior and such ... but before you critisize me become informed ...please ...
if you wish further technical information on any of these things i am posting about .. feel free to contact me via PM and i can further explain them to you in technical detail if you so desire ...
I am pretty much a computer novice. So bear with me. I have heard the rootkit that was on the sony music cd's was to prevent piracy. And so am guessing that ones for pc games would do the same.
But my question is how are they bad? what does a rootkit do to a comp that harms it and almost impossible to get rid of .

Nah they didn't learn really. THey don't use them anymore on PC games and such, but the PS3 has an option to implement them in the dev kits. Won't know if that option is used of not and may even vary by who designs/publishes any specific game, but the potential is built into the PS3. Of course propriatary hardware and such so they can do almsot whatever they want.

I wouldn't be surprised.
