imageWoW Classic: A New Challenger Has Arrived - MMORPG.com

It’s now less than 23 hours until World of Warcraft: Classic is live around the world for everyone who has a subscription, and I must admit I am a little bit excited. I’m not one of the people who has been clamoring for Blizzard to bring back the old game, but it will be fun to run around some of the old places again to do some of the questlines which were destroyed in Cataclysm. In these last few hours before launch, I want to take a look at the recent AMA Blizzard did regarding Classic. They answered a few questions which are essential for understanding the experience players will find when the servers open later today.

Ok, loggedin. There were literally several 100 players in the starting zone runnging around with nothing to kill. This is just too stupid. I'll wait a week.
Sounds like the 2004 launch to me! Welcome to classic!

I wonder how long it will last until it loses popularity? Hopefully, it stays a "thing" for awhile.

So Activision is signalling that they are going to put the live servers in semi-maintenance mode now (this has been the pattern for EVERY mmorpg to date that has opened "classic" servers).

LOL I guess 15 years is a good run.

I just had the most memorable hour in a 15 years old game. It felt like completely different from retail, it was like going back in time. On my server people were so nice to each other, of course it may not last forever, but tonight it was truly magical. Players were standing in long queues waiting for their turn to get a quest item or kill an NPC, and while in the queue people were chatting, some singing, all laughing. It was truly beautiful to see.

Great memory of my first night back in WoW

Not to sound like a dick, but why would you expect any different?
I'm a sucker for WoW. I thought I'd recapture the magic when I first started only to find out it wasn't all that magical. It hit me when I logged in, reality set in and I regained my senses. Oh well, won't be the last $15.00 I blow.

About 80% of playerbase will come to the same conclusion over the next few weeks.

Nostalgia is stronger than common sense

If people made decisions solely on logic and not emotion - nostalgia based marketing and sales wouldn't exist.

Just goes to show you that no matter how many previous times we are proven wrong - emotions still override logic and make us believe that we can recapture that first experience of awe and magic.

So gamers keep spending money hoping to recreate and relieve the impossible
Uhm, private servers have been around for years. So that argument makes no sense. Anyone who came back to WoW not knowing what to expect are the type of people who do zero research before buying a game. Better known as bandwagoneers.

People have been saying the same things about old MMO's for as long as I can remember, and they've only been partially correct for as long as the position has existed. There are players kicking around on custom UO T2A and AoS private servers nearly two decades later, Project 1999 is still pretty popular. The nostalgia argument goes as far as a certain, reliable percentage of individuals returning to try these games: that is to say, there will always be a portion of players who aren't impressed by reliving the experience. I can say without a doubt that there's a vast underestimation for how popular WoW Classic is going to remain in a few months, however. Everyone can agree, the population will dip, but if you think Classic is going to die in sixty days, you're delusional or lacking the experience indicative of the types of players who frequent private servers or original content MMO's.

Looked at it and not Interested because it's not the wow I knew.

Blizzard IMO Destroyed the original World OF Warcraft, sure WOW Classic some may like, but the game lacks all new content, and they should just fix the current WOW version such as revert talent trees, remove restrictions on Arcane POM PYRO, Give Mages back their portals etc.

Wow Classic why I don't like it.

    - No Barbershop / Transmog option
    - Cant go on Goldshire inn
    - No going to old ironforge
    - No piles of bones

The original feeling isn't there, and the slight upgrades like Barber / Transmog have totally been removed as well as all expansion content.

They would be better off just fixing the original wow minus the game breaking changes they made to begin with, and make cataclysm world but give players the option to be an an instance with original wow and such.

This is not nostalgia. It’s people wanting to play a real social MMORPG.
WoW Classic will be popular for a very long time.

The only question is: will it be more popular than retail?
My guess is, it will be.

I give it less than a month before it starts to die down.  If people are having fun then fantastic. Good to see ppl having fun again.

    Without a question.

But how long will it remain fun compared to the 1st time?

That is what every relaunch always comes down to

Usually what ruins it is the mad rush to get gear and levels in a blink of an eye, since everyone already has every class build, and every leveling and gear guide ready to go.

It's sort of just like following IKEA assembly instructions - that's what most mmo relaunches are like.
That's what ruins all MMO's IMHO

    The rush to be Uber

I think its a good thing that its all been done before. Hope it helps quell some of the old elitist bullshit.

I really can't wait to see the point where the nostalgia runs off, the rose-tinted glasses are forced off and the hype mellows down.

People actively forget that this is not just a relaunch, it's them going back to the game's original state. They will NOT be making new content for it, they already confirmed they don't really have plans to do things like Wrath of the Lich King [meaning content WILL just stop before it] and Blizzard is simply not insane enough to re-launch WoW and take a completely different path than before while still having current WoW.

Don't forget we already had a moment where players thought some actual features in Classic were bugs, just imagine once the normal players who never touched the game before start to touch those extra-hard dungeons, the raids, THE ATTUNEMENTS.

If by popular you mean total population -i will not be wrong

WoW classic will never hit 12million subscriptions, which was retail peak - that ain't happening.

    That's beyond wishful thinking.

Masses dont want to socialize anymore - majority wants to solo along others - aka pseudo-socializing

I doubt Blizz will LET it get bigger than retail.

Blizzard is all about $$$ - so if there was demand - of course they would let it get bigger than retail.

    But let's get real

    Retail NA realms 242
    Classic NA realms 24

    Yeah, about that
Retail Servers are smaller than Classic and they are all pretty much empty.

But yes, of course Classic won’t reach 12 millions, no one is saying that.

2 Millions though is achievable, which for a game Blizzard didn’t want, is not too bad.

That "nostalgia people will quit" theory only applies if the person actually played vanilla and even then those people may have wanted to do other things(raid, pvp) in the game at the time but couldn't do it for various reasons so they'll do it now. I have a very long list of things I want to do that I never got around to doing cause I was raiding all the time.

There are also probably a lot of people trying the game for the first time or people who at the time of vanilla were playing other games.

There's also that % of players coming from non-mmorpg genres looking to play an official version of vanilla that won't get shut down at anytime.

I don't know what some of you have been smoking, saying population/hype will massively drop in few weeks, but as far as I can see it, THIS .. is here to last.

I mean, even I, i stayed in-line for THAT head quest for fuck sake. One of the best moment in recent years for me in any MMO. There was a long line, with lots of RP-ing and jokes. 30 mins later, I manage to complete the quest, but ..i wish it would of last longer.

One of the best line I manage to say was "Ladies?! I can't BREATH!" , as there were like 5 of them very close to me! :)

So yea, Classic is Classic. Everything you do have some short of accomplishment and I will not miss the ride this time. First time I played WoW was in late 2006, so I was around 2 years late in the..boat. Not this time!!

I wonder how it will progress? like will they simply add the old expansions until it reaches current content? or make customized patches to capture the feel?

Basically clicking away text windows ruins every MMO, try to have fun instead of rushing things. Without story and lore all there is left is a bunch of mechanics.
