One year ago the Bard’s Tale 4 launched to much fanfare. It also launched to some criticism and was hindered by performance and polish issues. Since that time InXile Entertainment has been working on polishing the rough spots into a gem. Bard’s Tale 4: The Director’s Cut is the result. This is the show we’ve been waiting for.

Wow. The original launched in 1985. I have been procrastinating playing this for a crazy long time. Gonna have to finally play it.

EQ1, EQ2, SWG, SWTOR, GW, GW2 CoH, CoV, FFXI, WoW, CO, War,TSW and a slew of free trials and beta tests

I can remember getting out my graph paper so I could map my first Bards Tale. That's right millennials, the game did not map itself or have big arrows and questions marks to tell you where to go or what to do. ;)

Getting a 71 at Metacritic, so not sure I will buy.

Metacritic is probably not the best source for whether or not you will like a game.

hmmm, I think the game is just fine. Why don't you watch a few videos to get a feel for it.

Also, I would read the metacritic scores not just look at a number. That will reveal a lot more.

Not crossed it off, when it gets reduced I will look at it again.

yeah that's always a good idea when you are on the fence. Also, Steam offers refunds so it really isn't any big deal to try it and see if you like it.

Just so you know the first 3 games are nothing like bards tale 4.

First 3 are first person grid based dungeon crawlers (happen to be my favorites for that type of game).

BT4 was s huge letdown for me personally

It offers optional grid-based movement. The article is a bit long for a preview but I mention that in the Features section. Grid- based movement is really well done. It's fast and fluid. Using it also offers both an advantage and a disadvantage. Interactive objects popped more because the grid places party in range of the object whereas free form movement doesn't. With Free Form movement it's easier to peek around corners and surprise enemies. With grid based movement they would often spot before I could charge in.

Oh you are the author? Nice job. I Kickstarted this so I'm happy with the improvements. One of my better KS buy-ins.

Not to be toooo kiss-assey but you are one of the most consistent quality posters here. I hope to see more reviews from you in the future!

I was going to get this about a month ago. Glad I didn't so I can start with this version instead.

I backed this on Kickstarter but never played it. Will I get the direction's cut version too?

Thanks for this. I didn't know they're developing a director's cut version. Will check it out. I quite like the puzzle skipper actually.

Some people do still like mapping, but for me that's a thing of the past. I do like "fog of mapping" and having to collect maps like say in Prey though. That's part of the joy of exploring.

Thanks for the article, I liked it and found it well written.
I took a break from the game a bit after launch, but I think it's time to go back and play it again.
