E3 SWG Demo Info

I was able to get into the floor 2 hrs before everyone else.  Went to the SOE online booth, SWG had a demo set up.

What I saw was a GCW demo centered in Rori.  The way it was explained I was viewing the 2nd part of a 3 part event

Let me just say it was rather cool looking (too bad can't turn my graphics up like them lol).  It was squads of NPC's fighting it out, ATAT (that looked rather funny, it was bugged and looked like a puppet being pulled by strings).  The story line goes something like the empire is building/testing a new weapon and the rebels are trying to stop them (or take it from them, can't remember which).  It's an event that is unlocked by the players on the server supposedly.  When all the quests have been done the event gets a date when it starts.  I was assured each part of the event will be announced before it goes live and more than likely on a date where everyone will get a shot to particpate (so those of us that work could try it out).  I was told they are expecting 100's of players........I'm still not convinced they can actually do this but according them using Rori it's possible.

Now the ending of the demo you'll never guess what happens..............................

The city they use on Rori completely BLOWS UP and becomes a waistland rofl.  It seriously looked cool.  You all asked for a PvP battleground, well after the event completes YOU HAVE IT.  Some little things I forgot to mention are new looted weapons/armor that can be aquired that is tied to the event (maybe it's tied to the quests you do here, not sure).  Either way it was a cool looking event, my only concern is each part will only happen once.  If you miss it, you miss it.  Wish it was more like the old Village where it resets the event after it concludes.  Maybe an option would be to let each phase in the event (which there are three) take 3-4 weeks.  Recycle the event every 3 months sounds pretty good to me although I think the whole point of this event is just really give everyone a grand battleground to have PvE PVP (my mistake) battles.

Oh and after the destruction of the city its pretty cool, you can go into destroyed buildings and actually fire from second level.  I asked if they were going to allow some kind of snipers in the game because it looked perfect now in this battleground, it's something they are looking at maybe in the expertise skills.

So let me get this straight. They plan on pulling back thousands of accounts with a 1 time event? Talk about a waste of time and effort.

I hope you realize this is nothing new. The AT-AT at battle events have been done before, attracting 100's of players as well. They also had squads of NPCs escorting them.

I'll try to dig up some screenies. Last one was on Lok, outside a player city. And despite high population, it was quite playable.

And city blowing up and turning to wasteland probably meanst that building goes poof, and all that's left is terrain.

Sounds like it will be a permenant place. The question is, why go back after the event is done?

Gee wiz, you can fire from second level. And people will come within LOS and 64m range? Does it really take soooooo little to impress people these days?

The whole thing sounds lame IMO. Is this the big news for E3 they bragged about? I hope not for their sake.

The funny thing is that I would have be impressed if they would have done the Star Destroyer thing they Demo'ed last year, and it's a year old, lmao!!! That would have actually been something to brag about, lol.

Look at my screenies, it's not even new. All that will be extra, is that they will add another NPC structure. Everything else is exactly the same. Reselling the same old stuff (mine is from last summer, during the CU) over and over. And people are going ape over it.

It sounds to me like the events will be one time only, but at the end, we'll have a battleground (first time since launch) as a permanent fixture on Rori.

  • DistilerDistiler Member Posts: 416
ohh figure you can shot from the second floor!! I'm amazed at wich point is the technology nowadays!!

BTW, seems nice but...mhhhh...not so nice. I mean, the got all the time in the world...and we had all the patience in the world. SWG should be full of pvp'ers battlegrounds, full of citizens doing their business, smugglers smuggling, stylists in their hairshops, etc. SWG should be an integral game in 2006 and it's not.

it's going to be a real laugh when only 40 people show up to the 'big' event on the lowest populated servers..... hahah what a kick in the teeth THAT will be.

  • xPaladinxPaladin Member UncommonPosts: 741
Well it's a nice thing for the existing players at least, but, yeah, once the event is done that planet is going to lose any semblance of usefulness. Not that I'm aware it had any in the first place, but still.

I mean "being able to fire from the second floor, sad as it is, is a new feature for SWG. I mean, damn.

Yup!  It sounds like it might be a neat event, but they are introducing it way to soon.  The entire GCW needs to be worked on.  There needs to be some reason to fight in the GCW besides for bragging rights.

What they should do is fix up the GCW and then introduce this event as a showcase.  Maybe that is what they have planned, but I thought I saw a post saying that whatever was shown at E3 would be on the live servers with publish 29.

Very poor timing if you ask me.  Looks like they just went for flash over substance for E3.

ROFL.  Absolutely sad.  As others have said, they expect a one-time event to save their game?  And this isn't some "new" content.  If quests have to be unlocked by the entire server, how long will it take?

Not to mention with "firing from the second level" making this like a FPS, headshot 4TW!  GRRRRR.

This won't save SWG.  The game is now on life support.  please pull the plug.

The "l33ters" do.  They'll be rejoicing.  Someplace else to feel important because they aren't in the real world.

It's just more "Battlefront II" bullshit, and not really surprising.  They've already said all they care about is combat, and it's likely all they are any good at.  Just another of the myriad things they "borrow" from other MMO titles (World of Warcraft) to make themselves more attractive to that crowd.

It's the same kind of marketing mentality that is rampant in America today.  Commercials on television and advertising everywhere play upon pubescent anxiety (e.g., "I am only as good as the car I drive").  They know that the mature crowd (30+) has the money they want, but they also know that by that age, you've acquired a sense of quality, and what is really worth your money, and you've gotten your insecurities much more under control.  It's harder to get the money from that crowd, because they actually consider what they are getting for it.  Even though they don't have the cash assets the older crowd has, it's far, far easier to get money from the juvenile demographics because they are much more easily swayed by flashy advertising and attacks upon their insecurities (i.e., I can be important in a video game by pwning people).

Oh, well.  Have another beer and keep looking.

I can see by the 2 clicky pictures it was back in the old days, when we could have tamed creatures like the Kimoglia. Too bad it's not enough to keep a veteran in game. I used the veteran trial and was only abble to play 1 week, then reopened 3 weeks ago because i toke some days off, and managed to play 15 days, mostly because i met nice people on a guild. Still, after that and trying to get my char back to it's previous master status, I could no longer stop yawning. This game is too dull now. I miss the content those Empire Divided CDs had

OMG!  I just realized why they aren't concerned about the lag.  What they are going to do is start the quests with publish 29, but secretly do not make the whole city destruction event unlockable until later.  After a few months more of subscription payments, and after they have the lag issues resolved (ha ha ha), then they will unlock the event and say, "look, you guys unlocked it!"

Sounds like the jedi and froglocks all over again.

No live server, looked like a Test type server.  Hell there was only ONE dam Jedi in the battle so you know it was on live.

At least they're not showing off Jedi. Keeping them rare and mysterious, you know ;)

So that's it? That's the big hoopla? Who gives a shit about battlegrounds or some shiny-turd, more-than-likely-one-time-event that IS going to be full of bugs and is gonna be lagged all to hell.

If this was just a monthly publish, sure that'd be fine, but E3? PATHETIC!!!

I would like to echo other peoples question on how a 1 time event is supposed to bring in new subs, and if this is such a big deal why was the news broke by a player before the devs even mentioned it.

On the flipside this does explain why they have been so quiet about what they are showing at E3, doing a 1 time player event, that will end up leaving a lot of the current players out, just so they can re-open a battlefield they took off line years ago is not really much of anything to brag about.

Now if they were finally showing off REAL planetary control, and NPC guards that are actually dangerous, with base style tactics to take over cities or Player elections wich would allow for a whole slew of ways to try and take over a planet from Assassination to jumpstart elections/break up communications of command too full out frontal assault. That I think would be something to brag about .
