Sack the enemy capital!

I posted this over on the warhammeralliance boards but I am curious what everyone here thinks also...

The end game PvP of WAR, the taking of enemy capitals, is one of the biggest things that I am looking forward to in this game. I can imagine the excitement as my realm mates and I gather in strength and fight our way zone by zone to a climatic final battle in streets of our enemies capital.

But how often will this happen? According to all I have read so far each race (6) will have a capital, and they will be placed in a set of zones with two capitals paired up, one evil and one good. So we have 6 capitals in 3 different good vs evil sets of zones. According to the Warcry WAR preview (which can be found HERE ) Mythic envisions these battles working like relic raids in DAOC. This makes sense to me as we can see a pretty clear similarity between the two. There are 6 relics in DAOC as well as 3 areas out in the end game PvP.

In my 4+ years playing my beloved DAOC I must admit that I have not personally been involved in much fighting over relics. I have defended a few and it was quite exciting but I just never got into it much over the years. I think that I always felt that it was just too darn hard to do. That and it just wasn't much different than any other keep capture, except you could expect a much harder fight to take it. Oh, and only 1 guy... 1 stinking guy in the whole raid got the glory of the relic capture. For him it was great im sure ;)

Anyway back to my point which is to ask the question how often should capitals be taken over? I think looking at DAOC relics...It just doesn't happen often enough. Sometimes relics might switch hands quickly over a few days but other times it can stay pretty stagnant.

Of course i don't want the opposite to happen where the capitals are changing hands every few hours either. Capitals changing hands too often and the event loses its luster. Just like capitals that are too hard to take. This seems to me like one of the KEY game design issues that Mythic is going to have to tackle. How do they pace the end game PvP.

DevilSlayer touched on this HERE and what i got from reading the few replies in that thread is that some people think it should take a week or so to take a capital.

So I ask all of you, how often? There will be six capitals. 1 a night? Or maby only 2 times a week? Im curious what Mark Jacobs thinks about this. I don't really have an answer my self just to say that relic captures in DAOC just didn't happen often enough for me.

Well.. it depends on how well your realms players can attack/defend.

To generally state the answer, I would say infinite.

The war is fought between two capitals, and that section of land is split into 11 different zones. Initally, each side has the four closest zones to their capital, and then there is one neutral zone between that. The game will be a tug of war between the two realms, each trying to obtain as much land as they can from the other side. Once a realm can seize the final zone before the enemies capital, then a siege of that capital takes place.

With that general overview in mind, it is up to the players to decide when the sieging takes place. I don't think they will have set times for when a siege will take place, because in order for that to happen they must choose a realm to be sieged, and it would be unfair for a winning realm to be sieged.

I kind of jumped around a lot there as I am in a hurry, but I hope you get the point.

I would like to think that at least 1 capital would go down like every 2-3 weeks at least.

I am hoping that you have to go through a progression to get there, so you just can't raid the city at 4am when no one is awake to defend. I hope that siege is needed (and that it is made with their tradeskills).

You don't want to frequent that is for sure.  The meaningfulness comes from the difficultity.

Over a month for the first to occur and then hopefully not more than 1 a week at anypoint.

I agree that 1 per week at max.  Otherwise it doesn't keep that sense of accomplisment factor and I think wouldn't hold interest for very long if it was any easier than that mainly due to the fact that any benefits one may recieve for the accomplisment would not last very long if the capitals are switching control every other day.
