There's nothing wrong with meters, they don't only show damage, they show all sorts of useful stats. Take in WoW the best is Details!, it shows damage, DPS, damage taken, friendly fire, healing, over healing, interrupts and dispels.
Yeah some people use it to be twats but it can also help to see where people are screwing up. I can use a Details report to see what a player is doing wrong then give them some advice on how to improve. Good luck doing that by just trying to watch them play during a fight.
No damage meters....I find all they do is make players hate other players because they don't do as much damage as they think they should, so that player gets blackballed.
That's why I don't like Damage meters; they enable all sorts of bad behavior. That's why I say keep the damage metrics firmly in the development phase and only on the server side. Putting that kind of information on the client side will lead to log parsers and other means to calculate everyone's DPS, and some people will use that to fuel their anti-social side.
A good community shouldn't allow for an "their DPS isn't good enough" attitude. Inclusion, not exclusion. If you think the other guy is a bad player, teach them, don't chastise them or kick them from your group.
If the community is good enough to include people and teach them rather than ridicule and kick them then it would be good enough to properly use Damage Meters as a tool.
Only bad communities misuse Damage Meters or any other kind of information gathering tool.
I guess it says a lot that most here think the Pantheon community will be so bad that it will automatically misuse Damage Meters.
We's discussing if the game itself should report that, though.
Not if its in the message window. That one is
obviously a given. You will obviously be able to export a logfile and
compute the raids dps with an external program, just like in Vanguard and possibly also EQ (never played EQ myself).
Ok then, would an internal damage meter really be that much worse than an
external one? I mean if they are doing proper damage reporting and
logging then someone will create one and anyone that cares will be using it for sure. So what would the community gain by making it be player created?
am 100% for damage meters information is a good thing, those that fear it, i understand don't want be controlled but one of two things will happen regardless of a meter existence.
A ) you gear and skill is fine an you will be ignored.
your gear or skill is a issue, they will focus on you.
it the second everyone demands justice and does not feel they should be questioned their here to have " fun " not be judged, mostly likely in that scenario your trying to be carried and don't want be called out.
the start of any MMO game their is no " standard " damage/skill required meter or not, so you be fine. it the 3-6 months later when gear more common, dungeons runs are on farm and player are leveling alts rushing friends that it a issues and regardless if i can see your dps they will know by kill speed or healer going OOM, tank not be able take hits, versus what their use too and that what start the divide that people hate with elitism and casuals.
