  I've been really tempted to get this but have been put off by the reviews - most say they play on the private UO server which doesnt bode well for vanilla. I think i'll get it next pay day though, I am very curious.

  Its not a private server, its a community server (Legends of Ultima). Its one of the perks of Legends of Aria, if you dont like the ruleset of the official servers, you can try the community servers.
  They use the same engine (graphics and such) but have completely different rules, skills, abilities, monsters, maps, etc.
  
  Legends of Ultima community server mimics Ultima Online.
  It has open Pvp outside towns, same skills and abilities, and they are working on copying the same dungeons and map as UO did. It has lots of content. Its pretty much UO (pre trammel) with better graphics.
  
  The official servers have limited pvp (only available in oasis or with factions), different combat and abilities and less content than LoU, but they are adding more content with every point release.
  
  You should give it a try, it's worth the 20 dollars.
