I logged into my nephew's account and spammed the news. The reaction was this is a good thing. They think it will bring in more players and more money for fixes.
I tried to explain that perhaps they were missing the point. The point being that SOE stole their subscription money to develop another game for console gamers AND have you pay to beta test it.
It didnt sink in unfortunately. For some odd reason, it looks like the community over there will embrace this.
Last time I checked, subscription money was supposed to go towards fixing that very game and adding content. Guess thats a dead way of thinking now
They have a point, because as I stated in another thread, the game would have to be polished before shipping to PS3. It just can not go in it's current state. They'd be *idiots* to ship it out as is. I'm talking the special breed of dumbass that doesn't even make it to the short bus.
But, yeah, it's just further proof that SWG has been nothing more than a fraggin' beta test for both EQ2 and now this console port. Lame as all hell.

My guess is also, that SWG will be cancelled for the PC.
Seriously. Look at playercount, the age of the client (new client won't run on PCs, and they wouldn't be able to handle it anyway), and comparison to other MMOs out there. It simply can't compete anymore. Even with a graphics revamp, the damage is so bad, that it's dead in PC world.
And that's hard to deny, no matter how you spin it.
I think cancelling it for PC is a bit overkill. It is SOE dealing with corporate proprietary tech, so they'll probably be very much able to cross-platform it successfully. Some of the speculation going around now is that the PS3 will use an emulator to run the games off of native C/C++. It's possible. I dunno how possible given that the specs for PS3 aren't final yet.
But if it did get cancelled on the PC... wooooo boy. Not gonna be pretty.

If it's windows, then it'll be directx9, and MS runtime libraries. A few #ifdefs here and there around low level code, and you're done.
Many companies develop same code for PC and x-box.
Hmmmm. I was reminded by the "Logitech G15" poll on the SWG forums about keyboards.. put two and two together here. Out of curiousity, I found an article about PS3 hardware. It mentions 6 USB slots which will accept keyboards and mice.
So.. yeah, unless there's some major leap and bound in technology that prevents swg from being playable on a computer (or rather, much less playable than it currently is), I definitely don't forsee computer based SWG being cast out. The PS3 is essentially being treated like a mini computer. Meaning the kiddies will be able to type to you, ack!
I shouldn't be so hard on consolers though -- I plan on buying a Wii.

I must say that this is just a classic example of how SOE has been exploiting and lying to us all along. I stated many times in General Discussion before my account ran out in November: SWG WILL NEVER SUCCEED ON THE CONSOLE.... and here's why. Now I could be totally off the mark because I haven't played consoles since PS1. A typical console player buys a game, plays it for a couple weeks or months, beats the game or gets tired of it, and moves on to the next one. The parents of these kids rather rent a game at blockbuster, let the kid play it for a few days, then return it when the rental is up. I tend to think that it will be really hard to get a console player or parent to cough up a monthly subscription for them to play a game that they'll get bored of anyway. Hopefully, this will be the big bang that will blow-up in SOE's face and cause the rest of their playerbase to quit, and be a huge flop on the console. Then we can sit back and laugh. Or maybe this will be SOE's exit from the PC gaming community, and they'll concentrate on porting everything to consoles and let Bioware take over the PC market and come out with classic servers. tme will tell

Doesn't feel any more different than the EQ2 beta test.
Zing!

Shouldn't beta test be free, or even paid to you?
Yeah, I PAID a good $50 for the SWG box and played for 2 years.
I should consider giving SOE a phone call and charge them $15 per bug i submitted.
