If anything, this is a failure. They could see 250k+ (maybe 300k) on launch day if they didn't release crippled Steam client which took hour(s) to unpack (?!) after hours of download + if they didn't shutdown the servers with 210k people online for a second (?!) hours-long maintenance on the same day.
Hilarious part: unpacked D2 client has exactly the same size as the download (80Gb). Why would anyone want the users to waste literally millions hours and gigawatts of electricity to get exactly the same file size as in the beginning? It's like the devs are mentally ill.

Because that is how steam works with most pre-load games. You download the game in a encrypted state. Then once launch hits it unpacks the client and you can then launch it. Its been that way for a long time.
If you downloaded after launch then there was no unpacking that needed to be done. I literally just downloaded the client (about 20 mins to download) then it started up right afterwards.
I mean this has been fairly standard for preloads for some time. Its not just Destiny 2 that has done / did this. Thats why its a preload of the game. I am sure they could have flipped the switch eariler and just kept the game servers offline but then people would have been complaining about that.
And the servers going down multile times for maintance we to deal with the server issues that was causing people to sit in queues and get stuck on loading screens.
Now that it's f2p kind of I decided to give it a try as my son is a fan of warframe and he's loving it and tbh I think it's pretty good too.
Granted we only played one evening we think so far the story is quite good, we went and started the legacy red war from Amanda and will be playing the campaigns in order, and yes we are not so much into pvp and are playing this for the pve but so far so good.
Dunno if it will be fun long term but seems definitely worth going through the campaigns.

I don't understand your hate-boner for D2 while simultaneously sucking off Anthem which will be closed this time next year. Your bias is not only unfounded but blatant.
I put in about 1000 hours on Warframe so I am considering trying it. The two needed expansion packs are $60 on Steam as I understand. I know there is a free version but I am afraid that won’t give me a good idea on how it really plays. Can I buy Shadowkeep without Forsaken to give D2 a good try?

From what I've read and seen all the campaigns after the first one are independent, so you can go straight from Red War to Shadowkeep without Forsaken. Actually it's probably a little easier, the sheer volume of quests you can pick up if you've never done any of the seasons is massive.
I had played at launch for a couple months but nothing since, picked up Forsaken and Shadowkeep to try it out again. I ran around picking up all the quests I could find and now I've got 3 pages of quests (30-40) most of which I can't even start because of pre-req's.
So far though only one of the Shadowkeep quest I haven't been able to do, it requires a machine gun and I have found one of those yet. But it just rewards another machine gun and isn't tied to any of the campaign quests, so no biggy.

As far as i understand, the free version gives you access to all year one and two content, so there should be plenty of content to try out, before deciding if you want to buy shadowkeep. i played a long time ago, and the game doesnt have levels anymore, and you dont start with th emain campaign, but in a thing called the tower, a hub of sorts, and from there the world is "open" too you, and if you want to play the old story campaigns, i think they can be chosen from an npc there. seems like a good amount of content for free
Either check the table just a tiny bit more thoroughly or let me play that chart-topping marvel called 'Steam'.
Still, it makes it the 4th most played game on Steam

i had no issues. oh wait, i play on console. easy peesy
The game is the best it's ever been. With a new model that allows them to release content far more consistently than the previous years. It'll only get bigger and better for the next year at least.
They'll be at over a million with consoles players included.
It's far from being a failure of any kind.
Agreed, and if they ever release it on the Switch i'd love to see those numbers again. But i don't think Bungie likes Nintendo.
The Switch doesn't have enough space to install this game, probably it doesn't have the hardware capabilities to run it at more than -20 FPS.
They could do it.
There is no reason the Switch can’t run it. It runs Hellblade, Doom, Witcher 3 etc. It also runs Warframe perfectly and D2 scales pretty awesome with lower hardware.
