i've never played daoc, it was a little before i got into MMOs. i have high hopes for this game, the only game i have left playing is EQ2, which ill admit the changes they made recently made a big improvement from the first time i played it when it first launched, but it's too much pve for my taste and their pvp servers are a little weird to say the least. swg pvp pre combat upgrades was great fun (although imbalanced), city of heroes was a huge let down, guild wars doesn't have enough depth, and wow pvp was boring very quickly.
anyway back to topic, i'm just wondering what makes daoc pvp so good, dunno much about RvR just hear the praise about it.

And I never had a problem 1v1, but I just felt like the system was incredibly well done from the standpoint that it helped funnel everyone (even those new to pvp) toward the proper actions and goals in a fun manner. Simply put the RvR system in DAoC (IMO) is unmatched in a MMO setting. (Pre ToA particularly and on the new classic Severs now)
Old school DAoC rocked because the PvP meant something.
If your realm (1of3), held all the other realms relics you side got a 20% (?) damage bonus all the time.... ALL THE TIME. You have any idea how much easier that makes leveling?
If you held you own relics you got a 10% i think.
If you held nothing your at 0%.
Because if this, if the enemy was attacking your side you had good REASON to go defend. Where-as PvP in 90% of other MMO is pointless. It was also set up, so that for each extra relic a side had, there PvP areas lost NPC defenders. So it's much harder to hold onto 6 relics (all of them) than just your two.
Add in the facts they later put in realm abilities, which where skill you could buy from points earned while PvPing. Kinda like a secondary lvling system. They also had Darkness Fall (DF), and dungeon that only 1 realm could have access to at a time. During DAoC's prime DF was the best experience and best gold gaining place in the game, and had most of the best items. So everyone lvl 40+ would beg the PvPer to go open up DFs, as soon as one side took it, the otherside would start fighting to take it back.
DAoC really started falling out when it released some less than well received expansions. DF became much less important, thus PvP became less important. People began to spread out too thin, over an increasing number of areas. The expansion offered areas, with better exp and loot, so the 20% to damage and the benifits of DF became unneeded. Thus the need to PvP died off. As PvP died off, it became harder to form groups quickly, (lack of decent PuGs), thus people started botting. Which resulted in PvP becoming even less fun. Ended up just being guild groups, or solo people buffed like crazy. In it's prime, you could go to any PvP area and see message like "Going to defend Bled, making party we leave in 5." And just like that only 5-10mintutes after learning an enemy attack was underway 1-3 group were running off to defend. Defending was more important. When I left you'd be lucky if you'd get guild group of maybe 5 people running off (max group is 8) leaving the 3 random people behind that were asking to come help defend. The unifing factor simply died out.
DAoC was the MMO that brought me fully into the MMORPG genre. I loved that game, I'd be working on homework and get an insta message saying "The abls doing a relic RAID!!" Then I'd instantly log on and join in on our defense. It really gave you something to do after you reached cap level. Eventualy Mythic learned people preferred the old school style, and recently released a "classic server" that doesn't suffer/benifit from the later expasions. It is now one of the most populated servers. So even though most people bought all the expansions they prefer to play in an area that doesn't allow expansion items and such, I think that alone should show how damaging the expasions were to the game. However, it is IMO simply too late. Numbers dropped too much. I honstely think DAoC would be in better shape today if they never release an expanion at all and just did mild updates.
This is very sadding because DAoC was sooo much more fun than WoW, or any other MMO I tried since. Why? People are what makes an MMO. DAoC was set up to bring large group of people together. That all it was and it worked. In WoW you have alliance and horde, but if the horde starts attacking a random alliance city how many alliance people CARE?
In WoW if someone says in /local chat "yay I got 60" how often are they congratulaged? If anything they are more just another person to get in your way when you are trying to get a group now.
In DAoC when someone hit cap lvl they got a ton of congrats... and often got, responses like "Great, we need more healers in RvR" Intra faction competition is a very small thing in DAoC... You were simply a "Mid" never the "first Mid to kill boss XXX" That brought people together, and made DAoC one of the best MMORPGs of it's time.
DAoC's pvp is fun because you can be solo, duo, grouped, raids and still do well. The PvP system is based on skill, and talent more than your gear which is a big plus, but your gear does play a role in your game play (more defense, stats, resists, damage you do ... etc).
For example 2 really good players can take on a full group of people, or a full group if played well enough can take on 3-4+ groups, it all depends on how well you play your character and class and its really fun, especially raiding keeps and taking over, getting relics back and fighting against all the realms.
Thats all I have to say about DAoC pvp, If you really want to get a feel for the game I would suggest play it
To build on what others have said: The great thing about the PvP in DAoC is that it is not about individial accomplishment - it's about your realm. Working together against a common enemy really fosters a great sense of community. Support classes are actually appreciated, and the top players in each faction are leaders(figuratively, if not literally) rather than l33t. There's no other MMO that gives players such a stake in each others' success. There's no bullying, like in most free-for-all games, and there's no grinding PvP rep or ladder manipulating, like in WoW. Just good, clean, blood-soaked fun.
Also what is this assumption that consoles are for kids. The average X-box 360 owener is like 18-24 and male. Most console owners are young adults with cash, in college and have a lot of free time as they build their lives. I don't know why everyone thinks its a bunch of 13 year old kids. Also they just sowed that the game could and I repeat could run on 360 they never said they would be releasing it on 360.

People who dont play for the longterm dont need to suffer any consequeces for their actions, they can grief, act like assholes, get away with it and not care. That's why you have the notorious 'i'm gonna quit this game so i'm gonna ninja loot, pk and be a general pain in the ass to anyone in my vicinity idiots. They may have been 'mature' while they still had consequences to worry about, but obviously not mature enough to actually be a mature person when it really comes down to it... */edit*

Thank you. You noticed I didn't attach an age to what I was saying. But he did, which is common amongst those that are child like in their minds. Most of the griefers, kill stealers, and flat out rude people were above the age of 18 and under the age of 28. This is a 2 year observation I started since I picked up SWG.
The main thing that sets apart an adult from a kid usually (not all the time) is whether your a parent or not. Parents show more respect, are commited to the game long term, and provide family friendly guilds that focus on others and not themselves. Single males usually (haven't met but one immature female) are machoistic, rude, and use 1337 to fit in. The under 16 crowd isn't as bad, but they are the ones that talk about Chuck Norris and are generally just immature in a correct sense. I mean correct, because they are showing the appropriate level of immaturity and usually that goes away with a good community. In DAOC we got plenty of younger people and they tried their crap, but the were the outcasts, so they matured to fit in.
I think the same thing happens with other games. People try to fit in with the majority. Like several other people has said, the game being based on improving your character instead of the realm draws that immature selfish crowd too.
Now I know I am generalizing a lot, but the sample of people I am generalizing about are the ones I have ran into for the past 9 MMO's. I do understand that other people have had different evaluations and are just as credible as mine and I respect that. But these are my reasons for being wary of WAR. WAR will bring the children, and whether or not the majority of the community is children or not will depict whether or not they will mature or make the game hell.
In WoW, you knew when the kids got off the bus, because the chat started filling with Chuck Norris or some other stupid thing. There were too many to ignore too, I tried. Your list would be filled and there still would be more just acting like idiots. If this becomes the case of WAR, it will force the mature community to have to search for each other and I can't find that community within the first few days, I just quit the game. It's not worth it to me and there are always other games.

DAOC PvP is built around teamwork at every level. No matter what you’re in to, anything from 8v8 to massive raids, good organization and teamwork will win the day every time.
In the beginning you could pretty much cap or come close to capping your stats with good player made gear which just took cash. No repetitive instance farming for 6 months.
Your armor didn't look like crap because you are wearing 1 half of 2 sets. You could dye your armor so you could even match your guildmates regardless of class. So you could tell who the guild was most of the time at a glance.
Add to that sieging keeps/forst with seige weapons, something I was surprised Blizzard hasn't used yet (meat wagons, steam tanks etc.) until i realized PvP was just an after thought for them.
Then they added battlegrounds (yes before WoW "came up with them" as a lot of people are starting to think), where you could PvP in your level range and siege keeps there too.
They have rams, trebuchets (catapult) and ballistaes (giant cross-bows).
If I could get my original CD key back I'd reactivate today so I could use my high level character.
I'll put it this way.
I had so much fun in PvP I never bothered to reach max level for the first 2 years.
Where as I haven't played any other game for longer than a year, including WoW in which I got 2 max level characters and still hated thier PvP.
Additionally they introduced battle grounds for lower lvl players, and in a new add on there wer epvp oppertunities for all lvls of players!
But the whole keep/relic take was a brilliant idea! using seige engines to knock down walls rocked! Gah im starting to reminice about my time in DAOC PVP!!
But one of my most memorable moments was in a battleground, we were taking a keep and in the old days we had to whack at the door with our weapons, we were albions, the midguardians had the keep but i noticed some hibernians running to attack our flank, so i shouted to some guys to follow me and we charged the flanking hibies, it was great to see other people running along side me straight into battle, i have never had a rush like that since!
