I was just thinking about this game when I heard the news, can't say I'm surprised. Hopefully it will breathe life into the game, with the current gaming boom it's a good idea to hold off on the update even though that wasn't their initial reasoning. I don't think the update will "save" the game but maybe it will pique the interest of those who already purchased it and lost interest.
I think its a good thing. They admitted they needed more time and don't want another terrible launch. I applaud them for that. They know that this update is there one chance to breath life into there game.
I also applaud them for focusing their time on fixing bugs in the mean time. Again another thing that will help if they do get a new influx of players with this patch
Keep in mind, Todd Howard admitted to knowingly launching the game broken (IGN interview from this summer), plus the collector’s edition canvas bag issue, plus leaking consumers’ data, plus legitimately lying on E3 2018 stage when discussing the game. It’s natural to say, “at least they’re fixing it,” but I’d caution folks to pause and remember what they did and said last year. Personally, I’d want a stable, content-rich game on Day One for my $60 rather than an objectively broken mess with a promise of things to come later.

Well sure, who doesn't want a well polished game for their money, but that ship sailed long ago. (It is Bethesda after all)
I've been playing it recently and to no surprise it is still a pretty buggy mess.
Yet, I met up with some high levels who share their tips for working around issues or at least have a great laugh over their continued presence.
On the plus side theres multiple ways to glitch the game, enabling players to build camps in the sky held up by a single ladder or construct features not originally intended which Bethesda doesn't seem to mind.

"While we had many ideas on what to add to the Atomic Shop, one of the ways was the direct result of the community’s feedback. We heard from many of you who wanted items with some real utility."
Is that true? The feedback I heard seemed to reflect the opposite and wanted it strictly cosmetic.

A lot of the people actually playing want something in the store that they can buy with the free Atoms they can get. The cosmetics are poor as well. They are all like Halloween costumes with no serious or cool options on offer... so a lot don't want to spend their Atoms on having a janitor costume.
The people not playing scream pay to win without realising how easy it is to get store currency for free.
I'm not playing at the moment but I have a few thousand Atoms just sat there doing nothing and I've never bought any. I haven't ever spent them on anything either, there's nothing I want.
What they need to do is have a separate store with utility items for Atoms and bring in a new currency that you buy with cash. The new currency can only buy cosmetics but the atoms earned from playing can be used for the utility items or the cosmetics.
I don't suffer from insanity, I enjoy every minute of it.
And by then no one will really care, there isn't a large enough, dedicated, player base to keep this alive in 2020 or beyond, especially with all the new games on the horizon..

Like you I just banked my free atoms as cosmetics hold little appeal.
However on my recent return I spent some on the refrigerator (not really worth it and a great bundle deal for 40 scrap kits.
If the would only sell more vault space and perhaps some better organizational options like POE does they could get $50 or more out of me easy.

I suppose we all have our guilty pleasures, and aren't entirely opposed to second chances.
Dynasty Warriors 9 was one of the worst games I've ever played. Doesn't mean I don't love Warriors games and won't buy say... Fire Emblem Warriors 2 if that's ever announced. It just means I'll more closely scrutinize these games before buying them.

In my defense I'm a rabid FO fan, FO4 totally captivated me and I have over 1500 hours played.....without mods.
FO76 plays very similar to FO4 so from my view it's just a weak expansion which has grown better which I have enjoyed playing the past months.
Entirely my personal perspective FO76 was never as bad as most people's perceptions especially considering many detractors have never actually played or are pissed over a stupid canvas bag which I can't imagine people buying in the first place.
As for spending $60 plus perhaps more these amounts of money are of no consequence.
I cheerfully handed $40 to a homeless family in a Walmart parking lot a few weeks ago with my only regret it wasn't more considering I was pushing a cart full of cat litter, cat food and cat treats worth over twice that amount. (Its good to be a cat living in my house, definitely spoiled)
So yeah, FO76 is one of my few guilty pleasures, especially considering how little I spend on gaming these days.

There's been several published reports over the years including one by CCP which was famously leaked confirming items of power are the most desired by the gamers most likely to spend big money on them.
Items of convenience or utility come in a close second and generally aren't as negatively perceived by the low spending or freeloaders players as true P2W is.
Grinding Gears has often been criticized (or lauded) for leaving money on the table by not offering more utility items in their shop.
But let's face facts, the slippery slope many predicted 10 years ago has come to pass, what with cash shops, loot boxes, in game casinos etc and outrageous player spending.
I'd say gaming is pretty much at the bottom of the hill these days, yes?

WTF happened at Bethesda? How do you go from Oblivion, Skyrim and Fallout 3 and 4 to this garbage where they don't even have NPCs?
Just sad and pathetic. Cash shop over NPCs, hell I bet they sell some in there lol.
Not even remotely interested in playing this dumpster fire and Bethesda has really tarnished it's reputation.
Of course you know EA, Activision and Ubisoft all are in on that hold my beer competition...
Greed over gameplay.
No NPCs until 2020. LAUGHABLE!
I mean sure but we will all be playing Starborne and Skyrim 6 at launch no matter how buggy they are.
yea, i bet bathesda said the same bout fallout 76.
how many players do they have again, 500k? that's ... alot, ait ^^
Sure but I also believe if they took time making Fallout 76 and didn't release it in the state that it was in we would be having a much diffrent discussion right now.
Also its apples to oranges. Starborne and ES6 have been stated multiple times to be single player only. So Bethesda would really have to screw the pouch for those two games not to sell well. Def since I think Starborne is Todd Howards first original IP
That would be Starfield and I'll believe that it's single player only when I see it since Bethesda is as bad as EA these days trying to make everything online for the extra GaaS cash.
