Been hearing that some gaming commentators (whatever one of those is supposed to be) think if AAU is a success it will show eastern MMO developers that is the way to go forward with western releases. So they see a turn around for MMOs right there.
I am not so sure, what I think it will say to eastern developers is they had better be careful about when they release the B2P western version. If eastern players see a version of their game releasing within a couple of years of the original launch which is not P2W they will not be happy. But maybe they are so entwined with P2W gameplay it won't bother them? Maybe the idea you can't buy your way to the top is alien to them?
Look at how far we have come, from protesting against items which have a gameplay effect to trying to stop gambling in gaming. It has not become the norm here as yet, but the baulk of players accept such practices.
EQ2 was right there, and soon after Darkfall/Mortal was to be released. So was LOTRO and Warhammer. If people hated WoW, there was many others.
That may be right but the point is that it's a business & competition.
One MMO takes players from another. And WoW and its impact on the industry is clear.
WoW moved an entire industry to another direction, for the worse.
Nothing is about creativity and excellent games anymore. Here is the current blueprint for an MMO: - Simple theme park mechanics. - Often F2P model with loot boxes to get people addicted/more involved. - E rated atmosphere that caters to children and man-children/families. - Expansion packs that just increase level cap and add more grind zones with a superficial garbage story as an excuse to play it.
And that model generates millions of dollars. Unfortunately it killed the genre.
