those people you talked to were not just diablo fans; they were blizzard fans; no wonder they jumped to WOW and despise guildwars;  only few people enjoy both guildwars and WOW

people stating here they were diablo fans, just didnt play diablo, warcraft and wow because of blizzard, but because they actually liked 1 of these games and thats in my opinion a far more healthy situation.

I was no Diablo/Diablo 2 fan, but they are great games.

This is the best signature ever. Well, it is really up to you to decide. :x

    Only 2 words:

    Factions rocks!

One thing I'm a little disappointed with: I can't take my Ascalonans to Shing Jea or my Canthans to Old Ascalon.  I would love to be able to run all my characters both Canthan and Ascalonan through ALL the missions but you can't.  First mission Canthans get in Kryta is D'Alessio Seaboard.  First mission Ascalonans get is Vizunah (Foreign Quarter) which, btw, is an absolutely awesome mission!

I can only hope that as tweaks are made to both games, you'll eventually see Ascalonans and Canthans in each other's lower level cities and outposts.

You level much faster in Factions than you do in Prophecies because - well - level doesn't mean much.  It's all about the skills, and any you've unlocked with the Prophecies Campaign are available as soon as you create your first character in Shing Jea.

Looking forward to getting back into Alliance battles.  Look for me on the Kurzick side of the line.  :)

What the hell does that have to do with this topic?

I think the GW-hater base ricefarmer is talking about it a different crowd from that of Saelfaer. Ricefarmer's, from his description, have not played an MMO, or have had a bad experience with one. They know little to nothing about guildwars and just categorise it as 'another one of those crappy online things.
Saelfaer's are the blizzard fanboys, who won't touch anything that doesn't directly support their motherlord's cashflow.

Both very different, and both bad reasons to hate a game.

You have to rememeber that when Jeff Strain and the other Blizzard guys left Blizzard in 2000 they had gotten allot of experience with Battle.Net. They built Battle.net. They had seen what hacks, what the community and what the economy had become. They had seen the mantra of the game, in its online portion.

They wanted to create another game like Diablo, were you create your own uniqe avatar and build it up, but it should be a game that did not have the flaws that Diablo had.

Did you know that Jeff Strain was the original lead designer of World of Warcraft? Yes, it's true. The guy who created GW and as one of the 3 guys who created ArenaNet, Jeff Strain was actually the mind behind World of Warcraft.

He left Blizzard in 2000, because he didn't agreed with were WoW was going. He felt it was becoming like Diablo.

He didn't wanted his game to be as time consuming as normal MMOs that requires you to play for long stretches of time without stop. He was happy about how it worked in Diablo because you could just dive right in and kill a ton of stuff and get good loot, in 5 minutes. Or you could sit and play all night if you wanted to, doing the hard missions over and over.

He did not wanted his game to have a monthly fee. It was here his vision truly collided wrong with how World of Warcraft was going. Blizzard wanted to make a standard normal MMORPG set in the Warcraft world, and Jeff Strain wanted a game that build upon the things they had learned from Diablo.

Jeff Strain also knew that one of the bad things about Diablo was how items and lvling was the most important things. He wanted to make a game like Diablo, but one were you actually had to think instead of click, click, click.

This is how Guild Wars was born. He helped create Battle.net, aswell as the multiplayer infastructure in Starcraft and Warcraft 2, so he had a good idea about how to build a solid netcode, and he used all the problems he had learned with battle.net to make GWs streaming and revolutionary technology.

I honestly have no idea how they made it, or why no one else have not done anything similiar yet, or how he came up with this business model with releasing retail expansions. But one thing is for sure.... Guild Wars is a product of were World of Warcraft and the Diablo series failed. But GW is so much more than that. Look at what they incorporated with their loot system. To make armor, you have to actually steal fallen enemies armors and salavage them, to make your own. The crafting is sort of player based were the NPCs prices are controllen by in the infliction rate and buy/sell/trade demand. The game also has the uniqe 8 skill system, that forces people to choose what skills they want to bring to battle wisely, aswell as talking about it with their teammates.

The best thing is that it works. GW just became 10,000% better with factions. Everyones biggest problem with Guild Wars that there was a lack of diversity in loot, armors, weapons, pets and characters. Now thats no more, and the gameplay has become open ended were people can join factions and take uniqe quests on either side, and larger battles and incredible cool end game PvE missions and hardcore pvp content has been created.

And it has all been done in a way so items and time spent will not own does who are just good at the game. The amount of builds now, are close to having over a million different combinations, and probably even more with the almost over 1,000 uniqe skills and even more with all the uniqe weapon mods and attributes.

    _________

There is still a few rough holes in the roads that needs to be fixed, but ArenaNet is working on it. Stuff like improved trading, improved grouping and chatting, and an expanded set of guild features are well under the way for us, in the upcoming months. According to rumors, Factions should be nothing compared to what Chapter 3 will have in store for us, this winter. I can't wait!

Guild Wars.  I gave that game over 900 hours, beat the PvE 7 times, had max gold, ranked 5 and every skill.

I gave my account away because the content [which is nill] couldn't hold my attention... and the PvP was beyound rock, paper, scissors...

Wait a second... you got max gold (1,000 platnum in storage) in 900 hours AND beat the game 7 times AND managed to get rank 5? Something doesn't add up here. It sounds to me like you just farmed for everything (no offense meant, just my view on this). Why do I say that? In just over a thousand hours, I've beaten the game 3 times and have had at most 50k in my storage. I think that I've had a grand total of *maybe* 150k gold obtained. Maybe that's why you got bored with the game, you were just doing the same repetative stuff over and over again, and that's boring as heck.

Orly? So rock, paper, scissors do require alot of skills, thinking, tactics and teamwork? I thought that it was just pure luck, but that might just be me.

Apparently not much but so what?  I chose to post an opinion on an existing thread instead of creating a whole new one.

    Sue me.

Hehehe, what I find kinda humorous is that he states:

"I spent 900 hours playing Guild Wars but it didn't have enough content to hold my attention."

Um... if it didn't have enough content to hold your attention how the **** did you play it for 900 hours?????  I mean, if you got bored with it, that's fine, people get bored with games after awhile.  It just happens.  But to say it couldn't hold your attention is just silly, it obviously held your attention for 900 hours :)

(by the way, in workdays (8 hours a day, 5 days a week) that would be almost 6 months).  If you played less than that it means you played close to a year ;)   I got bored with WoW in just over 7 days when I tried it... oh... and that was playing about 1 to 1.5 hours a day. :)

Hehe anyone who'd rather play Diablo 2 than play Guild Wars needs their eyes examined.  I have Diablo 2.... it was great when it was new... but now?  LOL it is not even remotely in the same league.  It was an ok little game but the graphics are limited to 640x480... 800x600 if you have the expansion... On my monitor it looks like utter crap.  And the game play isn't all that hot.  I'd much rather play NWN than D2.

I guess "all the diablo fans" are just your best friend who never even played Guild Wars. Success!

I'd say 900 hours and 7 characters is plenty of content. That's a lot of time invested, and seems to me plenty of content for $50.

And yes, pvp is considerably more that rock, paper, scissors. That's why it holds the apeal to many. You don't just get an alpha class, then pwn, or get stuck with a non-alpha class and lose by definition.

I played D2 for 4 years straight, and i think guild wars is a pretty good game, but I can't seem to get into it, and it will never compare to Diablo.  I wish they'de make a third.  (But they are so slow!!!)
