    1. There's no excuse for implementing this cash grab in a way that anyone on your friends list can just join. It should require a one-time active permission or at least a permission toggle whether you're on the list or not. Just being that guy that you traded with 6 months ago and haven't spoken to since shouldn't automatically do the trick. But I guess that required extra development so they cheaped out... again.
In the "Friends List" there is an option to "Join a Friend" permitting a player to join whatever server instance their friend is on, so not really a surprise this includes "Private" server instances. I'm sure it was easier (cheaper) to code this way and I can understand the business reasons for this.

The entire game was designed to be delivered as efficiently (aka quickly and cheaply) as possible which can be seen at almost every level, which of course has consequences later.

One good example is while adding someone to your friends list requires both parties to agree to it, (smart) it seems like removing someone is NOT a unilateral decision. (Stupid)

I've seen this in action, having recently joined a friends circle of long time high level players and as would be expected  over time there has been a bit of a falling out between some.

These former "friends" harass our group by joining our server from time to time as it seems they've kept some of our members on their lists despite everyone on our side removing them.

Of course with Private servers, it means these same arses can enter into my personal instance if any of my friends come to visit me and I can't kick them. (Very stupid)

If a friend joins your private server it is persistent for them when you log out. If you log back in its the same server. Expecting to private server hop to collect resources is ludicrous.

Carrying this forward from my last post, does this also mean if a "former friend" who still has you on his friends list comes into your private instance, then floods it with his asshat buddies, should you leave or get D/C'd (an all too common occurrence) it might mean they could prevent you of reentering your own personal instance?

If so then we've now reached the Outrageously Stupid point.

Fallout 76 has become as morbidly entertaining to watch as a radioactive trash fire full of fireworks.

    4. @Kyleran Yes Zenimax has also done some really shitty things with ESO monetization (loot crates, the yearly-DLC-that-shall-not-be-called-a-DLC, some sub perks that should be base game, etc.) but Bethesda when it comes to live service games, is like their buggier, idiot cousin. If ESO were to sell you a private instance so you could solo without seeing anyone, that would be a closer equivalent. But of course they don't because the idea of doing that in an honest to goodness MMO is ridiculous and no one wants that. FO76 is a single player game shoehorned into a live service for no reason other than profit - it's not an MMO - so the players there obviously do want to be able to play solo or with just a handful of friends. Apples and oranges. I guess providing an off-line mode for free would have been just too difficult for their minimum wage interns to implement.
Zenimax appears to have well profited from the monetization models ESO has transition though and to over the years.

Someone pointed out the strong parallels now being employed by Bethedsa which makes sense in my mind, try to replicate what worked elsewhere.

True, FO76 is no MMO, but one unique feature it has is private servers, so why wouldn't they try to find a unique way to monetize it?

Not sure what ESO gives its subscribers, some crowns and unlimited crafting bag which seem to be almost replicated in FO76.

Not sure what else ESOs sub has, but FO76 gave me a new outfit, a number of cash shop items which I guess we'll get more of every month.

We also get access to private servers and a swell tent so we can just camp where we are at the moment, not inconsequential as fast travel costs caps, so saving extra trips is good.

All for $12.99 a month, or less annually but I can't see myself playing FO76 a year from now so I'll go month by month.

Now true, it would probably be better if all of the above mostly worked, but I really haven't had any issues yet so I am able to be more positive than many.

Besides, I really, really love shooting NPCs in the face with my combat shotguns...

    ;)

For that to happen the people who bought this game must actually wake up and band together and do something about this shit show. Looking at people like Ky who I figured was actually smart (revising opinion  :D ) this isn't going to happen.

The likes of EA and Activision must be sitting there furious at the one-upmanship of Bethesda beating them at their own game of dodgy business practice. Their directors must be looking over now at the trophies they got for being the worst gaming company from the likes of the Levelskip awards. They must be thinking what chance have we got in 2019 with Bethesda on such a roll?

Have you seen Angry Joes rant on COD Mobile transactions and how they're rigged? That's some seriously next level stuff. Bethesda isn't even in the same league as Activision + Tencent in my opinion. Not that this isn't bad, but I'd put them more on par with Ubisoft in that way. Ubi games are generally less janky though.
I was not being totally serious there, come on you must have realised that. This is the one game Bethesda have fouled up on and from the way people talk you would think every game they have done was like this. FO76 is very unlikely to see my custom but any new Bethesda games will be treat on their own merit. The only caveat from past performance we now have to consider is how much GaaS will be brought in. There I would say my concern is Bethesda may be leaning to a more EA approach, but only time and new games will tell.

    2. The other "not a fresh instance" bit I'll give them some rope and let them explain. It's possible that there is something at work here to prevent exploiting the resources in a private instance and then using those resources in the public game. If they are doing something like that then those private instances may be keeping track of what you do in public instances and adjusting the private one's log-in state accordingly. Given their history of incompetence I may be giving them too much credit but it's possible that this is what's happening here.

    3. People actually bought into this? lol <Insert the only meme @Rhoklaw knows here>

Yep, very lazy way of doing it. "Cheaped out again" sums it up perfectly.
You'd think that given the backlash this game has already gotten them, they'd think twice about cutting corners for once... but... NOPE :joy:

The only winners of a class action lawsuit are the lawyers, if I'm really unhappy with a purchase I normally just cease buying from the vendor.

Thing is, everyone seems so sure I must be unhappy yet I'm not.

So far, no lost scrap, haven't tried private servers yet because...I actually enjoy interfacing with others in the game, which is highly weird for me I know.

Last night my friend and I spent about four hours shooting a variety of creatures in the face, mostly with combat shotguns.  Didnt even have a single disconnect...

However, the heavy guns are calling, mini guns, .50 cal machine guns and let's not forget,  the Gatlin laser.

Is OK, I've slagged on more than my fair share for their gaming choices, I can handle getting some shade tossed my way.

Honestly, if the sub unlocked a true private server my friends and I would have been all over it. They were totally excited by my first few Discord messages and then I think I crushed them with my later updates...

I have to ask, how does what they've implemented differ from what you and your friends were hoping for?

Perhaps you wanted something more like Atlas or other survival games have offered? (More customizable, host where you wish?)

For me, that was exactly what I was hoping for and kinda expected. With open world games, I thought it had become the norm. I thought my friends and those that joined later could come onto a persistent server. I am very disappointed in that.

I have no issues with the money and the cost. It is just like ESO and I do not mind ESO's model at all. As I have said before, if you release good and awesome content, I will reward you with my money. Companies have a right to make money. Just like with ESO - I re-subbed and played the new DLC. I got 4 days of new content out of it before the repetitious grind kicked in yet again and I know I unsubbed. Did I get my money's worth? Yes. But I will not continue to pay them for content to do over and over. Too many writs and too many dailies make Elidien go crazy. I will return to ESO with the next DLC/expansion and repeat the process.

I would happily pay for FO76 if it was a persistent world. But not for the his hybrid-server thing they gave us is not that. I have played the game since launch and it has come leaps and bounds from where it was and for the better. For me, this and the delay of Wastelanders, means I wait until the spring and it launches.

Combine that with The Outer Worlds launching (honestly best RPG since Skyrim in my opinion), I have no desire to pay the money for FO76 right now. The greatest gift Bethesda could give Obsidian is this.
Yup.  I wanted a server that was persistent and always available and ideally allows me to adjust settings.  But the most important part was persistence.

The way it currently is, one of us would always have to be online to spin up the server.  So if that's me, and I can't login tonight the others are screwed.  or if I will be on late... tough nuggies to you guys.

Then even if we get that worked out, but I logout they will all get kicked unless others have the sub.  And that quickly drives the cost of the server from $12.99 to as much as $80 or $90 a month for us.

To me mods are way more important than private servers but then each too their own.
