Best MMO for truly rare/unique/differentiated items

rostovrostov Member Posts: 12
Hi all,

Thinking of picking a new MMO, and was wondering which games are best in this aspect:  game mechanics that create truly unique/pseudo-one-of-a-kind items.  I read, for example, that EVE had one kind of ship of which only two existed in the entire world.  (post is dated, so maybe not anymore)  I remember playing SWG and scanning the forums just for fun, to see what cool stuff people had up for auction.

In SWG, of course, every item of a given type was (is?) different, with different quality and/or stats associated with it.  I really enjoyed that part of the game, shopping around and making great finds, even at lower levels, of weapons with just the right mix of stats for me.  I guess that kind of complexity goes hand in hand with a complex crafting system.

To me, the best part of MMOs is finding yourself in unique situations.  I don't love mining, but just the possibility of stumbling onto some super-high quality mineral in some remote part of the gameworld goes a long way towards making the world "real" to me.

Any tips?  Reading past threads, it seems like the sandbox games like EVE and Saga of Ryz are good possibilities, games where every item is unique and some can be extremely unique.  Any others?

Thanks in advance,
Rostov

Jumpgate... usually have a rare items in the game. You need to goto deep space to find them.

earth and beyond had some cool rare devices and rare loot only components in which you must craft ceartain devices, man i miss that game.

Jumpgate has always intrigued me because of the twitch-based combat, but I always assumed the other aspects were pretty thin--mostly because I can't find much info on it and the official site is kinda bare-bones.  Can you describe how crafting/resources/item quality works?  How do rare items come about in Jumpgate?

There is nothing exclusive about these ships other than the effort required to obtain them. All the blueprints required are availible from npc sellers on the market - except it takes a decent guild 6 months to build one. Once everyone got going there are a couple of them in-game and more in production.

Its not really complexity as chronological variation. The server has different mine-able materials that rotate say mothly. As a result someone can bank them and produce crates of amazing weapons and someone else could take the best resources at one time and produce crap.

Try Project Entropia - Its money based but what you describe is called a HoF (Hall of Fame) - a discovery so unique that your name goes into a permanent list of unique discoveries.

Eve is not really a 'game'. Its skill system is time based - the only reason to play is to find ways to farm money - making it extremely boring if you enjoy the notion of xp/fun. Saga of Ryzom is really good for crafting - if you want to make the best of the best for a certain armor - only one monster will drop that and you will have to hunt that monster until you have enough to make the armor. As a result one person can make the armor for a guild and the guild can farm the mats.

    Thanks in advance,

I beg you, avoid Eve & SWG if you wish to enjoy games and loot at star trek online as a game that :-

    a) has more than 27,000 players
    b) will be FUN!

Ryzom has a system like that. For example, there is a special material produced by certain outpost drills which can be crafted into a tool that has a small % chance of imbuing an item crafted by it with a stat bonus. There is another material produced by other outpost drills which adds a bonus to an item that is crafted including it. So if a crafter collects a bunch of really good materials, such as boss mats, supreme harvested mats, and Kitin larvae (uber spiffy mats found in the very-well-guarded nests of giant genocidal insects), and has the special tool, and the other special mat, and the tool happens to imbue its bonus, and the craft doesn't degrade, that crafter could produce an extremely nice item.

wrong. you dont know what you are talking about. EVE has very unique ships, some of them really rare, so that there is only 1 or 2 ships available on the whole game. they cant be built from blueprints, or earned as a reward for doing missions. they are only given out by the developers to people that achieved a very unique and special action, or that won an event.

i can think of silver magnate (i think 20 were given, but dont know how many are still alive), golden magnate (only 1 was given out, and was destroyed, so truly a rare item), navy vexor, and imperial armaggedon i think, or apocalypse, not sure. oh, and also luxury yatch, that i think only 2 are still alive, but one is on a banned acount, if i recall correctly.

this ships can be worth billions of isk, and the only way to get them now is to buy them from the owner from the owner.

I'm definitely thinking of giving EVE a try, on the strength of its complex economics.  A question about the ships, though- rare and non-rare:  are all ships of a given type the same?  I'm sure there are differences in terms of how they're equipped, but does one P-500 (or whatever) have different stats than another based on how they were built (i.e. who, with what materials, etc.), or do they all function similarly?

I loved that aspect of JTL ships in SWG, that every X-Wing you saw in the bazaar had a slightly different mass/power tradeoff.  It's easier to get attached to items when they have "personality" like that ...

What the hell? Im beggining to think EVE players are paid to come here and promote their game. I saw 0 unique/rare or differeniated loot while playing EVE at all. Im sure admin suckups get their fancy ships but thats hardly something to strive for. Diablo always had the best fun loot system for me (although not a MMO), unfortunately their are alot of duped items in that game which makes it not so fun after awhile.

A note on EVE - Its actually a really fun game if you don't mind something a little more slow paced.  Eve is a lot more Realistic than any other game and things run pretty slowly.  The ships of the same type all have the same stats, however, you can do a lot to customize them as well as the tons of skills you have available that effect that stats of your ship.  Its not a bad game just too slow paced for me, but if you're looking for something that's a little slower paced, less grind, and more freedom its the way to go.  The economy is just amazing and most player based.  And yes, there are extremely unique ships in EVE but its very hard to get those ships.  The people are very friendly as well ;)

Ryzom - Its a really awesome game with a good community.  Its not necessarily as easy to get into as many other MMOs like WoW or anything, and its much more open ended.  You have some direction but not so much that you really need to keep moving along quest lines and such.  Plus there are tons of custom events going on, and with the new expansion people can build their own dungeons for other players to venture through ;)  The crafting system makes it so most every item is unique, more so as you get into the higher levels, and your character is ultimately customizable, so you don't need to create tons of characters.  Overall its a very interesting game but its a little hard to get into as some of the "noob" quests can take a lot of time and effort.  If you're patient though the game is a really good choice.

I suggest you simply play EVE and Ryzom on the trial versions and then decide.  Of course, you may decide to choose a different game altogether, good luck ;)

I am reviving this thread because I am looking for exactly the same thing and I can not find it.

I am a collector at heart and really loved UO where I had one of the biggest rares collection on my server. But I dont want to go there again.

I am considering more obscure games as I wont probably be able to find it in the big contenders. Recently heard about Habbo Hotel, but didnt try it yet and I suppose its not really a game.

    So, anyone an idea?

There are only about dozen of Unique items that are incredibly hard to come by.They have fixed stats.

But rare items can have randomised stats which can surpass unique items awesomness by double and you can be damn sure you are the only one on the server if you find something very special.

Sure you can "Mirror" an item to create exact copy of it which costs more than most players can afford.
