You can't allow your game coverage to become a place where people jump up with gas masks on amd scream for their platform. Sorry, I agree that they can't allow that to happen.

disgusting. D4 is officially off the list. To think that Netease wasn't pressued by chin/ government is like saying not 1 of the thousands wasps I'm holding will sting me. Absolutely oblivious response from bliz/d president

Netease is a Chinese company. It's entirely possible that people in China agree with their own government. Just like we have people who voted for trump.

Either that or more likely, just toeing the party line for self preservation in a totalitarian environment.

I couldn't past this dude's "1/2-way into his drag dress up" hairstyle. I had to creep my gf out by showing her a screenshot.

Oh gawd. Someone please tell him what he looks like.. Please.

What's even better is he is wearing an LGBT pin on his collar - that same LGBT symbol Blizzard is censoring in China

That is true.  it is all over the people on these threads.

There were several ActiBlizz staffers with these pins, badges and tshirts. They were probably encouraged by the top suits to 'volunteer'.

I don't even remember the last time I saw such an impressive example of what a company thinks of its audience: "See these pins that half of us are wearing? It's a proof that at Blizzard, every voice matters. You can't fake a badge, duh!"

What is a Hearthstone Caster?  Hearthstone is nominally a game from Blizzard, but what is a caster and why did they get banned?  I wish the story explained the unknown elements for the people who have no idea about this type of game since it is of interest for even non-gamers that have a stake or interest in HK being freed from tyranny.

Blizzard doesn't operate in China, Netease does. They are different companies.

Also in case of video games companies EULA rules are completely made up by Blizzard in this case and its 100% at their discretion to change or enforce them as they wish.

But the same people who know this to be true because they see millions of examples of selective enforcement (especially regarding political topics) all the time.  But since it is shutting down the political side they don't like they agree with the selective enforcement.

These people are not honest actors and are unwilling to make a good faith attempt to reason fairly, consistently, or justly.

I don't intend to waste any more effort on this but to all who are painting this as a non-issue, it isn't:

You can't afford to keep silent as a big company when something like this hits the limelight during your watch.

I just don't get why people get mad on other people's behalf which in turn belittles their actions... He knew what the consequences were and by others fighting his battle for him his message has been obscured with social media bashing Blizzard vs. the message which was intended. As many have mentioned above many people who would have never known who Blizzard was have now become aware of the company's existence... Any publicity is good publicity in that investors are now likely looking towards Blizzard's philosophy of money over gamers which in turn will grant them more monetary power in the industry. Also Blizzard has little to no say over what NetEase wants to say on Blizzard's behalf because it isn't their game to monitor as far as China is concerned. Once the game was licensed Blizzard is simply expected to continue to release content and in return they are paid a licensing fee. Do you think all the game developers from Korea enjoy Russian/American companies licensing their games and monetizing them to a point where people hate the Korean company that made the game when they had nothing to do with how the game was published?...

I don't want people misusing visibility provided by a private company to advocate for whatever pleases them. That road leads to Sinead O'Conner tearing up a picture of the Pope on SNL (earning her a lifetime ban from that show, btw). Or getting blood (fake)  thrown on you by PETA at a fur shop.

Believe whatever you want. Protest all you want. But stay in your lane. People protest here in the U.S. - outside.

Ok let us try this again...

Blizzchung is not a victim, he did a act of civil disobedience. Then took the thing he pretty much knew was coming like a champ. Shrugged his shoulders knowing that he had done what he set out to do.

As for the casters... Do they actually lose anything by this ban...? I am not sure.

Blizzard did pretty much as little as they could. Care to know why...?

Because of human freaking nature, more specifically a little quirk called copycat syndrome (ok not really a actual syndrome but still a interesting quirk).. You see, had this not been punished we would have had a bunch of people quickly getting on the bandwagon just to get their 5 seconds in the spotlight... leading to even more people doing it.... And so on and so forth.

Now while that initially is good for the signal to noise ratio of the issue.. it is shit for pretty much everyone else... especially if half your biz is running events publicly. Because soon things will have gotten out of control and that is when the big hammer drops and from where i sit... That is a PR nightmare that makes this one seem like a fart in space.

Now if you think i make this shit up... Just look up viral trends... No matter how stupid or dangerous they are you have people copycatting for their five sec. This would be no different.

Not to mention that beyond that initial improvement of signal to noise... It quickly get hit with diminishing return that then goes in to a negativt as fatigue sets in and people simply don´t give a shit any more.

This interview with PC gamer is interesting: https://www.pcgamer.com/blizzard-president-clarifies-decision-to-ban-hearthstone-player-and-two-casters-over-hong-kong-controversy/

He makes it sound like if they rolled back the ban people would suddenly start taking over gamecasts to promote their political agenda. Such weak BS, makes me wanna vomit.

well i mean colin kapernick was willing to give up his career, and so was blitxchung, so maybe it was the right platform, but to whine about it later is ridiculous
