Pirates of the Caribbean Online: E3 Preview

DanaDana Member Posts: 2,415

Carolyn Koh interviewed the folks at VR Studios about Pirates of the Caribbean Online. This game is aimed for an E10+ rating and based off the major motion picture. Find out what we saw.

image Ever dreamed of sailing the seas of the Caribbean and meeting Jack Sparrow or Elizabeth Swann? Disney’s new soon to be launched MMO gives you just that chance. Dana “Lepidus” Massey and I were treated to the first peek at a game trailer and some actual in-game action today at E3.

Based on the same world as the movie, Pirates of the Caribbean Online (PotCO) the MMO is targeted towards a mass audience and promises a fun game with little down time. The player’s goal, like any good pirate, is notoriety – and there are many different manners in which it can be earned. Gamers may aspire to be the best card-player, the best captain, the best swashbuckler with cutlass, with short-sword or even best voodoo practitioner.

To achieve that, Disney has made some decisions such as sacrificing
pretty but intense graphics, in order to accommodate gamers that may
run an older computer with lower end graphic cards, and allowing
instantaneous movement to areas of the game where your friends are.

My god they weren't kidding. not to be rude but those graphics are just big geometric shapes! the back of the ship is literally a rectangular block...wow they are some damn slackers.

If I ever saw an MMO that would bomb... This one is it... I really can not see any reason for players to join that ugly thing instead of the other releases, unless its completly free.

That does, indeed, look pretty lousy.

Disney,  come on,  we know you got the money.  Even if the target audience is 10 years old and up,  a 10 year old can see the characters are "bubbly" cartoons,  and the graphics are very weak.  Maybe Disney is trying to get it out before Pirates of the Burning Sea?

those ships look like they were put together with lego's and painted. Pretty low quality stuff. even the ships I build for PotBS are a much higher quality if I may say so. Not sure putting those images out there at this time was such a good idea, if they pe very early in developement. If that is there target quality for visuals, someone light the magazine in that ship now and give it a quick death

I think the fact that they're trying to beat Pirates of The Burning Sea out onto the market is definately a plus for them I know that the graphics look pretty sad right now, but I assume its still in the experimental phases and as for me I would definatlly check it out because I'm sick of waitng for flying labs to get off their ass and actually put out PotBS. Im sick of waiting and Ill take second best if it comes out first and I think thats what disney is couting on and has a high probablility of happening.

    Thanks,
    Aaron

Well said, give me crap now instead of steak later!..er..wait, i mean, give me a second-rate game built by no-talent lepers who pump it out without any consideration for quality, only market placement.....well, you get the point.

I get sick of people bitching that a game takes to long to make, and in the next sentence recall a game that was published quickly, but before it was artistically completed, who's graphics, gameplay etc sucked (which i am sure you are guilty, just likethe rest of the gaming world).

Be grateful FLS isn't rushing their product out the door, to quickly ercoop their soaring development costs dispite the games quality. I think many games get released prematurely and suck for it because fans nag them for the game and say, fine i would wait anymore...give me the game now...they once they get it, they complain it's not good enough...gamers suck, we're never happy.

I hope they have a solid gameplay.

If they do, it would overcome everything, including lousy graphics.  Gameplay is always the most important aspect!

“Pirates of the Caribbean Online is not an inventory game. There will be a small number of swords but a large number of skills with which to use that sword.”
Well, thats some of the cool things about som RPGs; it's a lot of inventory to choose between. Maybe that's going to change. Maybe they understand that lots of different inventory is what the players want. Anyway they're going to get hard competition. They have to deliver a good product.
