Given the size, scope, and technical makeup of Red Dead Redemption 2 on PC, we have decided to split our review into two parts. Part 1 (this one) will primarily focus on the technical stability, the quality of the port, discussion on graphics settings, and comparisons to the Xbox One X version. Part 2 will focus on, well, everything else from the mechanics, story, and online. With that said, we present to you our Red Dead Redemption 2 PC Review: Part 1 – PC Port Analysis.

    Awesome review!

I've only had one CTD in about 20 hours of gameplay caused from switching mouse input types. But that is my main gripe with RDR2. The mouse controls are atrocious. Horrible. It's almost as bad as using a controller. I bet I've spent at least an hour of that 20 total just trying to find a sweet spot for mouse aiming. Still sour. Thank god for Dead-Eye. I've tried all the tips posted online and it's still janky.

Patiently waiting on a patch. Luckily I still have The Outer Worlds and Destiny 2 to play while I'm waiting (and it will probably be awhile).

Console cross-platforming is the worst thing to ever happen to PC gaming.

Awesome looking (and playing) game, atrocious keyboard controls. It look like the devs mapped all controller buttons to random keys in the left part of keyboard. So to activate stuff you'll have to use F, E, R buttons depending on context. A week later I still cannot figure out how to switch ammo (neither E/Q nor direction controls doesn't work) + how to rotate camera around character sitting in the barber shop.

Although it should be noted how there are almost no FPS drops (outside of 1-2 minute long glitches with 100% CPU cores load happening once per 10 hours).

    > modeling

Characters are mediocre at best - screens with the faces look like they are taken in games released a decade ago (just compare them to the characters from the recent games such as AC Odyssey, GR Breakpoint, Anthem, Lost Ark, Control, The Surge 2, Gears 5, etc). Although it's fine for people who have "beauty blindness" (if you didn't notice ugly people are getting children too - because substantial part of population simply unable to tell if a person is ugly or not?)

TL;DR there are some glitches and bugs but it's a lot of fun and a must have game nonetheless.

I have recommended gpu gtx1060 and minimum i5 6600k and all settings on low and game still hitches and screen freezes for 2-3 seconds every minute or so and worse depending on where I am in game.

I appreciate you identifying the type of game and the scope of the review. It was also very detailed, so I can see you put real effort into it. Not to take away from any past reviewers, but recent reviews have really been very thorough.

So I'm using i5 with 1070ti, and I've been getting cpu 100% spikes randomly every 2-15 mins when playing single player and online play. When it spikes, the game freezes 1-4 seconds, sometimes CTD.

I've found a solution that removes this problem 80-90% of the time.

    I do 2 things.

1st, I use msi afterburner to cap my FPS to 45. Is this the best number? iunno

2nd, I'm using that thing called "Process Lasso" to limit the cpu usage on RDR2.exe. Tip guide found here >> https://www.reddit.com/r/PCRedDead/comments/ds3kk4/stutter_freeze_temporal_fix_red_dead_redemption_2/

    Except I'm doing it with:

    When cpu use is: 90%
    Reduce cpu cores: 1
For a period of: 2 seconds

It kind of works. Not 100%, but 90% of my freezes are gone when I play online. I restarted single player and played for an hr or two, 0 freezes.

    FIX YO GAME NAO ROKSTA!!

Excellent and detailed write-up. It's very meaty. I like that.

The contrast between console and fully loaded PC visuals is useful. I have a mid-range (1660ti) graphics card. It would be useful to see a mid-range PC setup used in the technical comparison. Many (maybe most) of us have mid to low end PCs and not many frequent posters claim to sport 2080ti or better. I like seeing the top end, but for the future, when possible, it would be great to see where mid-range fits in with consoles and "High-end Desktops". That's just some food for thought. The detailed work you've provided is top notch.

The port is definitely having some issues and I want to play on Steam so I'm waiting until then to buy the PC version. Since I play on Linux the Vulkan rendering option is a huge plus.

I’d love to do more analysis with mid range hardware, but access to this hardware isn’t always easy. I only have the one PC (mine) so I can only test on that unfortunately. Glad you found the article helpful!

Thanks for leaving this honest review, i feel like they could have use a few beta test before, they know their game is successful on console so beta testing would have helped with people having different setups, my personal problem was online, i wanted to play online only to pvp but the crashes and the controll aim assist is killing the game for me.
  • SamhaelSamhael Member RarePosts: 1,534
P.S., have you tried setting the clock speeds for CPU and GPU to normal? I'm assuming you tried that of course but it's one of the first things I'd recommend for crash type issues if you're patched and have up-to-date drivers.

Spikes fixed for me when I only use two cores.
