I see so many posts that say.....this game is great.....this game sucks.....
I am currently playing Ryzom. Why? Because I never heard one person say "THIS GAME SUX!" I am quite enjoying the game. Now, I played UO for over 7 years and I quit.
If someone asks me, How is UO? I would say, well, the graphics are out of date and Origin did changes that I did not like and overall I quit, but you may like it!
If someone asks me, How is AO or How is DAOC? I would say, I did not play it much but I wasn't into the graphics or the user interface.
If someone asks me, How is Wow? I would say, Everything looked good, but a little too cartoonish and I have heard the community is aweful!
If someone asks me, How is SWG? I would say, the game was once damn near awesome, but the support was aweful and they screwed it up beyond repair!
I DO have a couple of points here! MMORPG is the central point to knowledge of Mass Multiplayer games, and I believe it is growing. I had never even heard of it until this year. MMORPG's are exponentially growing and we are still only in the early stages.
The main thing (and Marketing will back me up): Word of mouth is the one top advertisment for companies! UO, Lineage 2, Ryzom, Guildwars have benefitted from this, whereas SWG, WoW, and EQ have overall suffered.
I see so many things, and I will NEVER go by, this game SUX. I will try anything once if it is appealing.
To me neither CoH or CoV were appealing.
I am still debating on WoW, but everyone talks about a horrible community but I feel it probably isn't any worse than UO in its early stages.
Shadowbane, Lineage 2, RF, Horizons, Knight, Maplestory, Planetside, and Neocron do not have a big following.
SWG is dead in the water.

Try EVE Online.
No it is not a very famous game (in North America at least, compared to the amount of Brits), there is very little in the way of advertisments. But I believe this is one of the very best mmos out there. It takes a bit of adjusting to, very slow paced, very complex. The complexity of the interface turns off alot of newcomers (5 year old shield, thank god) but stick with it! You'll get hooked soon enough once you join a corp and the game starts rolling. There is a 14 day trial, all you have to do to ask a person is actively and currently subscribing to EVE Online (aka EO).
It has absolutely unparalled pvp. You don't have to go crazy on the left mouse button ("Modules" are usually activated by keyboard because of simplicity and speed). Even so, Eve's pvp is heartpounding and even the most hardened fps player will get an adrenaline rush. There are different kinds of pvp too (I found in Guild Wars, pvp gets boring really fast). If you try pirating (no this is not built into game, you have to be the pirate yourself), then you will be forced to make many moral decisions. Do I want to blow up this new player? Should I ransom him, money in exchange for survival? (This can be done through "Start Conversation" which starts a private conversation) Does he have friends around the next corner? Should I risk losing my ship? etc.etc. You can imagine the tension and excitement (in a good way usually) this can cause.
We have been getting multiple upgrades and hardware upgrades adding new ships, items, and elements to the game. Hardware upgrades make the game run smoothly even with 100+ ships fighting in one area (Large fleets can reach 300, now add in the opposing side). These upgrades are very important as our population has more than doubled (I don't see less than 12,000 people on at any given time. Peak is about 24,000).
I'll stop my endless flattery of eve.
Anyways, u mentioned u were considering wow. I won't say wow is the best gameout there or ever, but one thing is for sure, it's polished, it almost bug free, it addictive, and for the most part, it keeps me entertained when I play it. The community is not the best, but ya know, that's not an unique problem with wow.
Oh, and it's going down as a historical game with 6 million people
playing it. That in itself might be a signal this might be something
u'd not want to miss out on.
I say you should give it a try just to see for yourself, you did say u'd give anything a try one if it was appealing.

want your game back?
Actually I may have gotten lost and forgot my post!
A couple of points. I came on here seeking a game by word of mouth. When people said "Game X SUCKS!" I ignored them because that isn't even an opinion, its actually more of a way for me to see how old you are without asking. And the same with "Game X is AWESOME!" with nothing to back it up. I enjoy seeing the posts that explain why and why not.
For instance, I play Ryzom. No the graphics aren't 2006, it is a little team oriented. But the interface is nice, the setting is unique and the community is great but small.
I played SWG. It had a big community and had a great environment, and the combat was awesome. The NGE changed all of the above with the exception of the environment.
I don't think WoW's graphics are really bad. They can be a little abstract but its very artsy and I enjoy it, but everyones different. As far as community well it can be a immature at times and you can get some kiddies in your groups, but once you get up to the lvl 50s and then even more 60s, I think it goes down. Once you're raiding then I really didn't notice it and I feel there were enough mature folk to to keep the kiddies in line. Of course pretty much everyone gets into a guild and I had a easy time getting into a good guild, only problem I had was getting into a guild that was active but it wasn't much of an issue.
Now the biggest problem is being a lvl 60 and bored. I haven't played this game in a long time and went out when all the major patchs and expansions came in. Like I played in the battlegrounds a few times before I quit; it was time when Battlefield 2 came out (which I don't play anymore cause of crappy servers and lag).
I think many people who don't like this game don't like raiding (There is LOTS of it). I like raiding and unfortunately quit before I ever did Molten Core and now there are some newer raiding instances I heard about. So if you like raiding then this game is a winner IMO.
Another reason people don't like this game is the limited PvP. I think they are coming out with a patch to improve PvP outside of the battlegrounds though. But right now it pretty much sucks unless they did anything since I left and I don't think so.
So WoW has great PvE but their PvP is lacking somewhat. They need towns and cities to take over with actual benefits for doing it.
One question for anyone currently playing: If Alliance for example raids Thrall to try and kill him, does Alliance still get penalized for killing peasants? I remember it being like that and that was another reason why I left. It just turned off potential raids into cities for fear of getting stupidly penalized for kiling the peasants. They did it to keep people from killing quest givers and such, but it was dumb anyways. Kind of took the "War" in World of Warcraft out of the game.
