The Matrix Online Demo is free, but you have to be careful or you will join the growing number of people that paid for a month and lost their entire demo.

Note: You DO NOT need a credit card to play the demo.  If you are asked for CC info, you have gone to far.

This is what you need to do to play for free.
You need to sign up for FilePlanet.
You then need to sign up for the demo and get your key.
Download the game and install it.
You will need to create a Sony Station account if you don't have one.

When registering your copy of Matrix with Sony pay close attention to the screens.  You will get to one that says...

"If you would like to continue with your adventures, you will need to subscribe to a monthly subscription."

There will only be one button, CONTINUE.  Don't click it.  At that point CLOST THE WINDOW.  You are done and do not need to go any further.  I find the above sentence very misleading.  You don't "need" to do anything to continue your adventures at that point, just play.  After 10 days if you want to continue you will need to subscribe.

If you like the game and want to subscribe later, that's fine, but as soon as you subscribe the demo ends.  Wait until the last day or so of the demo to sign up to get the most for your money.

    I actually JUST DID THIS!

I clicked the button for next, filled in my CC information thinking they wouldn't charge me for the first month, but after then 10 days... only to find out I paid for a WHOLE MONTH!

Then I bitched at SOE and they gave me some EULA crap and said I was SOL!

How many people still remember the game under Monolith?  You couldn't find a cancel button online to cancel your account, you had to call a phone number to cancel and then they'd harasse you with questions before cancelling your account.

People claim it's not a big deal that you had to call to cancel, well, let me tell you, that practice kept me from ever playing the game when it came out.  Since then, I tried it out a while when it first when under SOE's station pass, but the game just wasn't very envolving.

I had played it during beta and I knew what the weaknesses of the game were and are still.  The game is a regular city, nothing special about it, you jump around and fight wi-fu, but other then that, it's  a like a regular city, with not much of any reason to explore it.

The biggest weakness always was that they made the game after Neo died.  They only had Morphious and Niobe as main characters, BAD mistake, cause those two characters are not the reason most people watched the movies.  If they had made it during the Neo/Trinity time-frame, the game might have had a better premise.

No matter, I'm not ever going to play it again.
