What kind of space MMOs can you suggest that have active playerbases?

It could be
dogfighting, like Ace Online and Star Conflict
capital ship fighting like Fractured Space, Dreadnought
space trading/exploration like Elite: Dangerous
space strategy/tactics which I currently don't know too much about, maybe Sins of a Solar Empire, but that doesn't have any players AFAIK.

Just specify to which category the game belongs to and what are your personal experiences regarding the game, also if it's p2w or has toxic community.

Star Trek Online. Capital ship fighting and some quests (missions) have some ground combat. Totally fun game and free to play.

There are many active players in this game. Message me and I'll hook you up with my guild. Which is one of the largest in the game.

Vendetta Online is a Newtonian, cross-platform space MMORPG that runs on everything from an iPhone to an Oculus Go.  You can pick up wherever you left off when switching platforms, and all users interact in the same digital space.

It features trading on a dynamic market a la "Taipan!", piracy, manufacturing, and epic space battles including hundreds of fighters and some capital ships.

Jargon-y, I know, but I haven't really found anything else quite like it.  It's slow to get into, but there is a pretty generous free trial.  There are a *lot* of slow times in the game, generally speaking. 1v1 duels are amazing, and spontaneous furballs are even better.

...that's basically my elevator pitch.  It won't be everyone's cup of tea, but try it out and see if you like it: doing so won't cost you anything.  If you are a PC player (which the game originally debuted on in 2002) make sure to start the game on PC.

It is a 3D game, in case anyone's wondering.

Both of those are pretty suggestive. A little more help?
