The company got the rights for the franchise from the author for like $3k back in 90s. Remember, kids, never sell your intellectual property rights completely, without royalty %%.

Although he's probably rich now anyway - considering Netflix show (it's actually damn good for a fairy tale, by the way).

CD Projekt Red made the IP popular and later the writer got more book sales and a big IP contract from Netflix. Even if he had given CD Projekt Red use of the IP for free it would have turned out to be really profitable for him.

Fantastic news! Love the Witcher universe, hoping for more seasons of the Netflix show and more non-Geralt spinoff games.

This is what i figured would happen, dudes lawyer was leveraging the new bargaining deal for all rights.
Bottom line for me is lawyers are scum of the earth, profiting off others misfortunes or just profiting off fine print matters. This guy's original contract was obviously ok with Andre because he never said a word until CD came negotiating a new deal for more rights.

I guess in the end BOTH parties were likely a bit scummy, one knowing his worth and the other trying to cut a cheaper deal but i still don't like the third party lawyer who profits from having NOTHING to do with The Witcher other than sticking his face in there to make some money.

Now if only Andrzej wasn't a blatant plagiarist. Even stole the conjugation of spheres try to explain that as inspiration.

What I would love to see is a game where you play a random Witcher: no bullshit about saving the world, about prophecies, about conspiracies. Just a humble witcher trying to get by being paid to kill monsters while avoiding getting linched by the simple folks. Maybe throw some local politics in there as the main storyline, but I find that the part the Withcer 3 really shined at for me was the side quests.

The story begins with a rare interview with the reclusive Sapkowski, granted in 2017. In that revealing conversation, the author said that when CD Projekt approached him about The Witcher video game, which was released in 2008, he dismissed the industry outright. The story begins with a rare interview with the reclusive Sapkowski, granted in 2017. All Fantasy....all of it, is plagiarized in some fashion. The same is true with Science Fiction.

No man. It's true, sadly. He was editor to this lesser known autor which made a fantasy book about a long white hair dude that people called "white wolf".

No I'm quite familiar with Elric and Micheal Moorcock, he is hardly lesser known considering he won the Nebula and Hugo awards. Here is the thing...Moorcock  based a lot of his work on eastern European myths...Also if you ever met  Moorcock you would know the dude has a short fuse, just like Andrzej he wouldn't stay silent on the matter. All he ever said was he dislikes the books. (to quote: Not really my bag.) Most of the crap you read about the subject is internet hysteria and personal opinion.

you know what you're right let me start my new band, linked park a band "inspired" by linkin park. With out first song "At the conclusion" with hit new lyrics like "at the conclusion it no longer matters." As you can see it's clearly different and trans-formative taking bits of linkin park but making them out own.

I get your point and I'm with you, but I have to mention, Linkin Park's first song was 'One step closer'... Sorry, I feel bad being the one to point this out by myself, and I appreciate you not pushing me away over this but, it was like a papercut, I had no cure for the itch. I'm not looking to make points of authority over you. In the end, it would have just had me crawling if I'd not pointed this out. Sorry to have this comment runaway from the topic a little, especially over something so easily forgotten - I'm just an old fan. Now I think I'll just go and find a place for my head.

They offered him royalties, he turned them down and demanded a flat payment up front.

Then years later after the games made the Witcher well known and popular internationally, he sued for more money. He'd have never even gotten outside of Poland if it weren't for the games CD Project Red made.

So like I said, I bet this time around he'll take that offer of royalties.

The only scummy party here is the Author.....CDPR made a fair offer, a real offer originally, and he arrogantly took a lump sum as he "didn't think anything would come of it" or something to that effect. Then, when something did "come of it" he got lawyers, and tried to renig. If anything it shows how NOT scummy CDPR actually is.

I would chip in on on this, but Mazeneal told the whole story already.

Sapkowski is a huffish piece of work, CDPR are the guys and good news here we get to see further Witcher games. I'd say we, gamers, as a people got a win.

Prior to selling the rights of his story to CD Projekt Red neither side had any idea of whether a video game based on his mythos would be successful or not.

3K is actually a pretty decent price in Eastern Europe to sell the rights of your novels to an untried, untested company who hasn't produced or sold any games yet.

CD Projekt were taking a risk too.  Buying the rights of something for 3K when you can save those precious dollars and simply create your own IP, is also risky.

Neither side had any idea that it would become the wild success that it did.

When it came time to renew the rights, both sides brought their lawyers to ensure that an equitable deal was worked out for both parties and it looks, by all accounts so far, to have been an equitable deal for both of them.
