Alexa, Strike the Middle Orc with my Longsword

This has to be right around the corner, if it's not here already and I missed it.

I believe that voice activated commands are going to be the Next Big Thing.

It won't be fast enough I suspect for anything twitchy.  But it should be enough for slower combat games (EQ, Pantheon like).

Personally I feel this will bring back some of the feel of pen and paper games like D&D.

Whilst your thread title fills me with dread (even though made in jest), I do agree that voice-commands in general will become a bigger thing in the future.

However, I see them making an entrance in the form of giving commands to NPCs, rather than to your own character.

Did you ever play the old Operation Flashpoint? I vividly remember a level on that where you take command of a squad and have to ambush a convoy. It used to take me forever to set everyone up with their opening commands (sniper - kill that guy, rocket - take that truck etc) and I never got the knack of issueing commands during combat. So, I imagine being able to give voice commands would be pretty cool, just saying outloud "Dingo, take the guy on the far left, Ratboy, take the guy in the centre, I've got the guy on the right. Take aim......3.....2......1......fire!"

In the RPG world, I imagine something similar with companions (though i hate companions!), and eventually, voice-chat could be the way we interact with NPCs. chat bots seem to be getting better at what they do, so I can see each NPC having it's own chat bot and us having to talk to them to find out information, get quests and stuff.

Could be interesting, and also a (sneaky) way to improve social conditioning and teach these "kids" how to have some manners! Imagine an NPC refusing to give you a quest or reward because you were a rude little shit?!?! This sort of tech and interaction would take roleplaying to the next level :-)

I use a program on Steam that I (think) is called 'voice attack' or something.

It takes a min to set up for each game but its amazing- Especially if you're left handed since it allows you to be very sparing with changing around keybinds.

It can be used for twitch gaming but only for a few lesser used abilities but it really shines on slower paced games- Even allows you to set a specific 'push to talk'button to use for giving voice commands so they wont accidentally go off while you're talking on discord or anything.

At first I tried to set everything for close to what the ability is (i.e. "magic missile") but later on and after much experimentation I changed over to just making sounds..I know...I know...

I'm sure it looks insane to anyone peeking in on my gaming session but....

One of the best programs i've purchased- Again, its not good for setting up all of your attacks/commands but its damn handy if you're a lefty and after remapping the keyboard you still have issues with a few (lesser used) attacks.

There is (or there was?) a mod on skyrimnexus for voice shouts years ago. It was a good start.

I'd get tired of shouting really fast, i rather play normally.

Wasn't the Star Trek Bridge Commander voice controlled?  Or one of those Star Trek games?

The problem is that the symbol rate on voice controls is terrible.  You wouldn't accept having to use voice controls only for the same reason that you wouldn't accept having to type out "strike middle orc with longsword" as the way to attack it.  That takes far too long, and it's far more efficient to press a single key to attack.

Voice control to supplement other controls is more plausible, as is voice control as a way to run a mobile game that mostly plays itself.  You'll still have to get past the problem of players feeling silly talking to their game when other people are around, though.  The possibility of other people telling your character what to do, even accidentally, could also be a problem.

I’ve been using Voice Attack to do this since Elite: Dangerous launched. It’s quite need and rarely fails to acknowledge your command if you have a decent microphone.

But you don’t use commands for functions you want to activate all the time, or functions that need to be fast, such as attacking. I use it for things like opening the map or going to hyperspace. You can bind the commands to very obscure hotkeys in games with a lot of keybinds to free up easier binds for other actions.

I have shunned the Alexas and Siris of the world....It just feels too lazy to use that stuff to me..... I picture our future where we lay in bed and never move a muscle 24/7 where electronic devices do everything for us.

I was thinking more about the diabetic neuropathy I have in my hands. I would like to think technology like this will improve to the point where I can enjoy mmorpgs even if my hands are too limited. There have been some good posts in this thread that give me hope.

First... I'm just going to drop this here:
    https://www.amazon.com/Fangtastico-Dungeon-Adventure/dp/B01K457ZUS

Next, voice enabled controls would be helpful in certain situations, and we've seen it in some games over the years, but obviously, there were limitations. Mass Effect 3 had some kind of voice integration. Some sports games had it as well.. most were on the Xbox with kinect integration.

It makes sense to utilize voice controls in RPG games that are squad based.  I would much rather have a real-time battle where I say to a party member, "Cast fireball on the nearest Ogre" or give instructions to AI teammates in ways that I would do if I were on voice chat with real players.

    We'll get there one day.

Personally the only modern MMORPG trend that annoys me is the idea that MMOs need to be designed in a way to attract people who don't actually like MMOs. Which to me makes about as much sense as someone trying to figure out a way to get vegetarians to eat at their steakhouse.

hawk used and hey you pikachu, and I don't see much use for then, most would mix words up and do something completely diferent.

on hawk sometimes he would fire missiles just because I sneeze, not something I would want to happen

    DLDR
its not a new thing and it will not be big.

for that be big enough to matter, they will need to fix the whole VR thing at least

also lets get real here, is far more easier and faster I swing the sword on the orc then me telling someone to do so

I tried to make a witty comment, but it turned too blue for my current tastes, so instead of being a downer I just want to now say that the blue ice looks pretty cool.

I think a better option would have a device or devices do the voices for the npc's in you're party.

I firmly believe that MMO's will move to VR with full body tracking and joystick controls, and voice will be purely for communication, for those that like to listen to people chatter about nonsensical BS about their daily life while playing games.
Egotism is the anesthetic that dullens the pain of stupidity, this is why when I try to beat my head against the stupidity of other people, I only hurt myself.

    Well I gotta say

Driving along in my truck and telling Siri to play me such and such a song or call this person is pretty freaking awesome.

There are places where it makes absolute 100% sense.
