Thick woods and jungles

Lord.BachusLord.Bachus Member RarePosts: 9,686
Are their any MMO’s that have really convincing thick overgrown woods and jungles..  that are hard to navigate?

Best MMO experiences : EQ(PvE), DAoC(PvP), WoW(total package) LOTRO (worldfeel) GW2 (Artstyle and animations and worlddesign) SWTOR (Story immersion) TSW (story) ESO (character advancement)

The original version of the Old Forest in LOTRO comes to mind.

Wouldn't players reduce the draw distances to see better? In pvp games you definitely would.

I returned to DAoC recently with the recent f2p offering, and I have to say I quite like Campacetin(sp?) Forest. Massive open forest, a bit misty, and back in the day you had no map to navigate. I remembered it fondly from my childhood. To be honest, nothing else memorable really springs to mind, out of Warhammer, Lineage 2, WoW. . . Ah yeah, I do slightly remember getting lost in the Old Forest in LOTRO. Good mention by Iselin.

    Yes.
Mortal Online has a jungle which is notoriously difficult to navigate. There is no minimap or world map ingame. Its the only game where, even after years of playing and memorising the entire game world, i still have trouble getting in and out of the jungle without getting lost. Its quite an achievement as far as game design.

Thats probably one of the few really dense forests i remember..

    but they are exceedingly rare...
because probably they devour graphical resources?

No, Jeffrey Steefel told that it was because people were getting lost and they weren't having fun so he asked the guy who designed it to make it easier.

At one point it was disgustingly easy but they did make it a bit better as the last time I went in there it was more than just a corridor with tree decals.

For my money it was, in its original version, the best forest I've seen in a game.

    Never seen its like since.

Not so much thick, as disorietning, was Faydark Forest in EQ 1. Lots of fog. Few points of reference. I got lost there often as a new player.

No one mentioned GW2 and Heart of Thorns. If you are looking for overly dense and annoying to navigate forests, look no further lol.

I didn't mention it because i think what made HoT hard was the volume of enemies placed on a mostly vertical layout, not the density of the actual wilderness.

I can't think of an actual mmo with the OP description. Visually i like Ashenvale and Stranglethorn Vale, but there's no danger there.

It seems to me that there was a forest in EQ on kunark called warslik woods?  I remember not being able to see anything as the trees went all the way to the ground.  That wouldnt be to bad but there were giants there and i would run right up to them.  This was a long time ago for me so i could be off on the details

Honestly the original old forest was such that you could easily get lost. And it was very dangerous. Vines would follow you out of the ground and snap at you, you were constantly running into the denizens and and finding your way out was very difficult. It was awesome.

i would love to see a company bring challenge back to the openworld PvE..
not just in combat.. but in all essences of the game..
and not just a challenge thats linear to time investment..

bring back challenge and meaningfull choices
bring me a world whereyour actions good or evil decide where you go..
PvE, with PvP as a choice but not mandatory.

    maybe i am getting nostalgic..
but EQ had so many good things
that got lost as WoW tried to repair the flaws it saw in EQ
if you want to give it another try to truely improve the genre
start from the beginning of 3D mmorpg’s.
There where 2 of them EQ and AC, if you combined them.. you would have magic..

I agree, I loved the original Old Forest!

I also took personal pride that I was eventually able to memorise the layout of the place and actually served as one of my first introductions to the enjoyment of an online community. I'd played SWG before but I was casual and didn't really join in much community stuff. But in LotRO I did, and the Old Forest was a starting point.

I think there were 2 or 3 group quests in there and I was determined to do them, so I learnt the layout, started forming groups and then leading tours through the place. Even after I'd completed all my quests, I used to love hanging about there and helping out other newbies.

Then they gave us a map, replaced the elites with signature mobs, and it was over, just another zone.....

Note to MMO developers: Not that we MMORPG players are fussy or anything but the Bachus wants a MMO with a really big forest. ;)

Old Forest was pretty scary. I had a lot of alts and each one got lost in there. My horrible sense of direction was no help either.

Yep, "old" Old Forest was amazing, and perfectly captured the mood and feel of the book's version.

And as Sovrath said it was changed due to the numerous complaints, which is a shame.
Sure, it was hard, dangerous (for your Undying deed), but was optional, you could level in the Midgewater Marshes... the only Book quest there (and mind you, Book questlines are optional as well) is for Bombadil, and you can get to his house safely from the Barrow-downs side.

I can't mention a similarly dense and "thick" forest, which is no surprise if you think about it, most zones in most games are designed around gameplay, so there are obviously routes, etc.
Old Forest is (was...) unique in this, since there the design goal was to hinder and confuse the players, with the walls of trees, the limited sight, the lack of map or guidance - perfectly parallel the book's Old Forest. They wanted the players to feel lost when they go there.

You really could lost in the Old Forest so much that you had to "teleport out" to your milestone... which ain't something most games are willing to do to their players, and as the example shows LotRO changed it too fairly soon for a more "regular" map design. Real shame...

I'd say Purple Lotus Swamp in AoC was nice. Not even close to Old Forest (first, it's just a swamp not a forest) and it has roads and clearings, even open areas for the guild cities, but it also has dark, dense and loomy parts as well.
(can see it on the background, since this one is an unoccupied city location https://youtu.be/xshj65zTEwI  )

    Not neccesary a huge forrest..
but a dense forest where people can get lost..
but mostly a forrest that looks and feels like a real ancient one..
