Top 3 most original MMORPGs?

GameloadingGameloading Member UncommonPosts: 14,182

So? what is your top 3 mmorpg that you find very diffrent from the other MMO's?

My top 3 would look like this.

1: Maple Story. mmorpg combined with platform, and you know, the result isn't even that bad. maybe not the best mmorpg around, but definitly diffrent

2: EVE, very diffrent from other MMORPG's, unlike anything you have seen before.

3: City of Heroes/Villains. if I were to make an mmorpg, then I would have never thought about comic book heroes. definitly a diffrent idea.

    1) Eve
    2) UO

Everything else is just a copy of the same canned crap.

Elves, Dwarves, +5 firesword, everquest in cars, everquest in boats, everquest in the future, everquest underwater, everquest in snowmobiles, everquest with orcs, *puke*

    Die already.

    1. SWG - Still the most unique, even with all the changes - and I'm just talking about how space and ground are integrated.

    2. Auto Assault - It's kind of shallow, but fun, and definitely not like everything else.

    3. Guild Wars - Actually, this one is different in a bad way. Too much instancing makes the game feel lonely and canned, but the skill-based gameplay and expansion philosophy are nice.

While I'd like to say it but I just can't.

EVE isn't very original. CCP just had enough balls to do it. EVE is actually based on Trade Wars.

    so.....

    1- Trade Wars
    2- UO
3- A Tale In The Desert

Anarchy Online, as someone said, quite a lot of features in new games trace its origin to AO.

Horizons, the "build raids" or community projects was and is a great idea, rest of the game is not all that great though, it do have unlimited cross classing, wich is also somewhat unique.

Project Entropia, for their revenue system alone, wich none have copied as of of yet, do not know if it is good or bad but it sure is original.

Here are my four choices. (Three was too limiting.) I don't play any of these games, by the way, so I'm not riding any personal hobbyhorse.

    1. A Tale in the Desert -- emphasis on crafting and social interaction instead of accumulating more loot
    2. Seed -- very competitive, but through science and politics rather than combat
    3. Infinity -- huge procedurally-generated universe to explore
    4. Spore -- Massively Single-player Online Role-Playing Game

The yawn-inducingly conventional MMORPGs currently being stamped out on the game industry conveyor belt would benefit from being designed to offer the innovative ideas in these games.

    What's so massive about it?
And where is the RPG part? I must have missed that on their site and every single one of the videos. :)

    1. Shadowbane. Amazing ideas, unique and fun gameplay. I believe it's the only open and fully interactive Political PvP MMO ever made. Guild destruction through city siege, no artificial factions. It was original in the truest sense.

    2. Asheron's Call 2. While the game may have been disappointing the races were completely original. Giant grey looking alien things, lizard-people, one race more bizarre than the next.

    3. EVE. I hate this game but I have to give originality where its due (even if it's stolen originality, as one poster stated.) You mean, you increase your skills while logged off the game? I don't have to do anything? Uhhh...okay?? That aspect alone makes it unique in my book. Terrible, but unique.

UO - doesnt get more original then first MMO.

EQ - 2nd MMO ever released that spawned another play style.

EVE - truely original, they did something no one has done before.

All other games can be described in terms of these 3.

Do you have to play something to know the concept is original ? The only game anything like what is described is Planetside . Yet Huxley "claims " to have more than a simple Battlefield formula ala PS .

For one what MMO at present offers FPS Doom style PVE ?

What makes Dark and Light original ? From what I have read it sounds like any other fantasy oriented MMO .

How does SWG pre-cu fit into those terms ?

    UO
    EVE
SWG (pre- the various nerfings of the original design)

  • HocheteHochete Member CommonPosts: 1,210
    1) UO
    2) EQ
    3) blank

There is no third one, because every game after UO and EQ has been a complete rip off.

SWG had simular combat system as in EQ, as in you target monster and activate abilities to kill it. Skll system was a combination of UO make something to make it go up, and EQ where you had levels. Houses were already implemented in UO. Factional warfare was also made in UO (Chaos vs Order). So I am not entirely sure which aspect you consider original, but if you find something I am missing post it =).

You have to include Everquest.  I mean just because almost everything is fantasy these days...it still was an original when it came out.

    1) UO
    2)EQ
    3) Tale in the desert

UO and EQ were the originals (aside from MUDS and Meridian 59) and theres nothing else like ATITD, so thats it. EVE isnt original, they said themselves they based it off UO, and I guess like Snakey said Tradewars.

I would say A Tale in the Desert. It is an AWESOME game and it's all about crafting!
