What IGN thinks about New World's limited PvE

MightyUncleanMightyUnclean Member EpicPosts: 3,531
As most people probably guessed based on the development schedule for New World, it looks like PvE content is going to be basic.  No raids or even dungeons planned.  Here's what IGN had to say after the hands-on preview:

"As far as I could tell the main story exists entirely in optional lore pages scattered around the world, other than that it seemed to be a bunch of fetch quests to grind out levels. From what I was told it sounds like most PvE content is free-form open-world bosses and a few large “points of interest” scattered about, but there won’t be any actual dungeons or raids at launch at this time. Overall, I fear the result could be relentlessly tedious travel across a mostly empty world. PvE felt lifeless, uninspired, and unoriginal."

Not that I agree with everything IGN writes, but it was discouraging to hear what they wrote about PVE which made me less interested in the game. Still want to see what others say.

"The first several hours of New World were about as predictable and cookie-cutter as PvE content can get in an MMO. I’d talk to a quest giver with a flashing icon above their head, skim over quest text full of needless exposition and fluff, then run over to the quest location that was usually a solid few minutes away even when jogging at full speed. Every quest I did involved basic checklists like talk to this new person, kill these enemies, collect these thing-a-ma-bobs, and so on. Afterward, I had to run all the way back to turn in the quest, collect my reward, and grab the next quest which was often back at the previous spot or even further away -- without mounts. Rinse and repeat.

As far as I could tell the main story exists entirely in optional lore pages scattered around the world, other than that it seemed to be a bunch of fetch quests to grind out levels. From what I was told it sounds like most PvE content is free-form open-world bosses and a few large “points of interest” scattered about, but there won’t be any actual dungeons or raids at launch at this time. My god this sounds exciting (not).

I might just skip this mess.

They need millions of FFA players to support this game, except this niche is much smaller than people think.
    Good luck with that.

I...we have not seen enough yet but this is petty much what i felt the game was going to be like.

The POI's could simply be those spawn rocks, sort of like a cheaper idea than Rifts.
I personally don't know what people THINK this game is going to be or do ,likely most don't know but simply buy into a video or marketing hype.

IMO this game will NOT offer nearly as much game play as Atlas.

The reason why New World team so carefully chose their words on size of server is because they do not know how many players. They claim they need to see what works best but if they come out and say they need 1 mil players but only get 200k then it would be like saying ...ok this isn't going to work.

Personally i laugh at pvp being the main focus, what on earth would i get out of pvp anyhow,i killed a player,oh whippty do,should i send out emails to all my friends or something?

Never forget 3 mile Island and never trust a government official or company spokesman.

As many suspected, sounds like the PVE side was rushed and could really use another couple of years to properly "bake."

Not going to happen though, instead basically this will be more like an early access title even if they aren't naming it as such.

Oh well, I can wait until it either improves or shuts down, not looking for it to "save the genre", just another game after all.

Overall I found the IGN review to be pretty positive.

We will know soon. Dangerous as well to underestimate what can be done by a big studio - and whilst AGS are "untested" they are a big studio.

So they are still flip flopping between PvP and PvE?

Is the Producer bipolar or what?

Well, they started as PvP.  Then they said they're going heavy PvE, but the previews I've read so far seem to think that PvP is still the real focus.  But there's no way an MMORPG developer would try to mislead us, right?

    I don’t even think it’s a MMORPG either.

Is this Fallout 76 little brother?

I have it on good authority the game has nary a suit of XO Power Armor or .5 mm Minigun in sight.

FO76 is actually a pretty good PVE game.

    ;)

Well, it was obvious their focus on PvP wasn't working, so switching to PvE was their only option. What amazes me is IGN and most of you think PvE content just appears out of thin air. Makes me wonder if you bandwagoneer complainers have short term memory.
That was my whole point.  My guess is that very few MMO vets believed that they could generate substantial PvE content in the time they've allowed themselves, especially not any of real quality.  The IGN article just confirms it.  Amazon is the one who tried to set our PvE expectations.  We didn't come up with it on our own.

For some odd reason people like to tell us what we armchair devs all clearly understand,  however the actual devs apparently don't.

They still have some time, and who knows how much money to throw at the problem.  Guess we will see, was never hyped on this.

Another potential game to play and....  "they done F it up!" What was Amazon thinking?  Put a team together to develop a game and act like they know what they're doing.......... and "rookie mistakes".

    So let me see.

No Dungeons, No Raids.. so none of the typical Farm till your fingers bleed bullshit other games suffocate from.... this is looking like my  kind of game.

Mobs are Open World, with World Bosses, like old style EQ1 was... so again, My Kind of Stuff going on here.

No "On Rails" story, where I am the chosen one destined to slay the dragon and save the world nonsense.. it's all backstory that I can, at my own desecration, uncover, and the world starts from where I am at, and moves forward... Loving that TBH.

I wager most of my game time will be spent wandering around, harvesting, crafting, and dealing with random events that happen around me.... looking better and better from a PvE stand point.

And.. they added in NPC invasions.. which are like massive Triggered Dynamic Events where Mobs swarm our bases, and we need to hold out.. this is looking sexy as fuck to me right now.

Personally, all the people that were looking for a PvP game, trust me, you have no idea what makes a good PvE game.. and if what I am reading is true.. depending on how they execute this.. this could be next level of what Epic PvE is all about.
