idk maybe because there is tons more to do and features to unlock than any f2p mmo including ESO. If you actually played up to the expansions you would see why. If you only played to level 35 and did some of the MSQ you haven't seen anything at all. I will add that If you hate anime tropes and decent story with cut scenes, than yeah it's probably not the game for you.

I didn't think it was for me either, I shelved the free trial for two years . Recently I got the base game and Heavansword for free, than went on to purchase the next two expansions on sale and figured I would at least fully level one class and give it a shot. Currently more than half way through Stormblood story and I gotta say I like it now.

Amazing game and I think they really know how to do a good story. Something I love about this game was my role as a White Mage and how important I felt when we did dungeons and when I was pushed to my limits as a player. I always feel so rewarded after a dungeon run when I did well and everyone was happy we did well and completed it at higher difficulties.

The gameplay, story, boss encounters and more importantly the social aspect of the game are pretty strong.

Weak point of the game is lack of character customisation - There's no character building. Being able to change classes all the time is kinda fun yeah, but I like my character to be mechanically unique or rare which in FFXIV is impossible, I also cannot customize gameplay of my class to how I like it. So I have to play it as it is unlike wow where I do have some ability to control how my class will play.
Another weak point would be how linear gear progression feels, but that's a problem with most mmos nowadays.
The boss encounters are up there, while I don't like the gameplay as much as wow's the bosses are pretty interesting and have alot of unusual mechanics.

When it comes to the social aspect though it wins over most games. Linkshells, guilds and player housing are some great features to actually get your players to talk with eachother. It doesn't have as wide a chat as WoW with the tradechat however, but I'll admit as a longtime wow player that tradechat is cancer ._."

Hey guys, I've been away from FFXIV for about 3 years now, never actually finished Heavensward, just wondering if it's worth coming back to after all these years or would I be left out and how hard would it be to get to the lvl I would need to be to enjoy the new expansion coming out. If I remember right, I was a lvl 70 Sam and half way through Heavensward before I stopped playing.
