I swear, every time I see a "gameplay" video for CoE it is always drastically different from the last. Not in an "improvement" kind of way, but rather none of them resemble the same video as the last much less the same game.

Baffles the hell out of me.

i like the plataforming /traps in mmorpgs , and this "Tomb raider feeling" , few mmorpgs give u that.

Their are probably some good reasons for that, not the least being the typical MMORPG player isn't looking for such in this style of game.

I recall loathing all of the jumping puzzles SWTOR had, GW2 also and I wasn't alone in this.

SBS often touts COE as a game with heavy realism,  nothing breaks that more than having players clad in heavy armor wall walking, sliding under traps, or zip lining across a gorge.

Perhaps "tights" will be an armor set?

     :D

Well I will say, this is looking to be an amazing Dungeon Running Platformer MMO  Game, which in today's market, would be a very unique style of MMO.

DDO, had similar parkour mechanics like climbing up/down and sideways, jumping, and tumbling, etc.  And I really loved that about DDO and almost no other MMO has provided that same kind of feeling of mobility.

So even if they don't get to the Throne War/Resource Management part of this game.. this could be new gen of platformer MMO dungeon style games... and could kick off from that.

    Edit Added:

Also, despite the Jumping Puzzle hate, a lot players loved the unique platforming systems of the mounts.. so it was not "Platforming" that was annoying them, for many, (Myself included) it was how GW2 did a Jump Puzzle, where you had to Jump your way through a puzzle, like some old arcade game with 1 button. The mounts on the other hand, were received with much praise, and players loved the aspect of using different mounts to transverse various terrain and obstacles.
Gonna be another Ashes of Creation: Apocalypse incident if they do that, going from what's supposed to be a resource-politics MMORPG to a Dungeon Exploraton Action game.

And yet, since that's the type of mechanics they decided to have in their game (for some stupid reason, since this was supposed to be a Resource-Politics-PvP whatever MMORPG), I don't really see any other path forward.  This is going to be fun to watch unfold if it gets there.
That is a solid point, I mean, they made a point to explain that this game was going to be about resource control, harvesting, and crafting, as well as land ownership and politics... and what they show is a platforming game.

While I like what I am seeing, no doubt, this alone could be the foundation of a epic shizzle dungeon running game, that I would be very inclined to play...

I am not seeing what they were originally talking about, and their key points.

In any case, credit where it is due, what they have shown, looks pretty cool none the less.

They have long promised COE was going to have it all, parkour style combat mechanics, deeper than Wurm Online crafting, better political intrigue than EVE, without any of the messy ganking or asshattery, more realism with survival mechanics than Conan Exiles, and better building / construction than EQ Next.

All to be delivered in record time on a beer budget and monetizing the game post release solely with occasional spark of life sales to players (once or twice a year)

Sounded like a dream almost too good to be true.

    Guess what, it was.

I agree with you, they would be far better off focusing on delivering a module or two at a time, or pulling a CU / Apoc move by delivering a simplified multiplayer  dungeon simulator at first,  building on it from there.

No way will this game ever release as promised in big bang fashion, well, not in this decade at least.

    ;)

Seems like most of the parkour stuff literally could have been pulled from UE4 asset store stuff.  Even free ones like this which was created by a guy that was teaching himself UE4 and created this in under 5 months:

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KSRnJrdP_qc&feature=youtu.be

I think Bree from MassivelyOP summed it up quite well in the comments on their own article:

    Bree Royce

Yeah, the low-poly style isn’t really the issue. They are clear on why they are using it and what the point of the video is. The issue is that not much appears to have actually improved in the last three years, and I’m not sure why they’d put something like this out. Players don’t need to see development mood drafts.

I think people aren’t up in arms because they have already tuned this game out. Elyria people have been talking about “bringing the storm” for so long that it’s stopped being outrageous – no one believes them. Put up or shut up, as the saying goes.

There is only one reason Caspian is releasing this content to test, Kickstarter Anniversary is coming up and they will need to raise a lot more money. If it was up to Caspian he would keep this under wraps longer. State of Elyria was supposed to be delivered in December 2019, it was not. Settlers of Elyria delayed, where is info on 0.5.0 which is Pre-Elyria...

Caspian is a scammer, most of the 8M cash is all spent and they will need to raise millions more. We will see how long Soulbound Studios can stay solvent before declaring bankruptcy and not giving anyone a refund. I suspect they will hang around for another 18 months or so. There is no game here and eventually Caspian will be forced to make a letter apologizing and closing down this project. Don't be surprised when it happens. I would not give Caspian another penny, this clown knows nothing about bringing a project to fruition.

Well from what I have seen, they already have the political asshattery spot on, and they have not even made the game yet.. so.. I guess That was Easy.

I have.. like no fucking clue about those other games. Going to be honest, I never payed EvE (and never had any desire to do so), i think I tried Wurm, but, if I did, I have totally forgot about it, and no doubt never it made it past the very beginning, and I know I tried Conan Exiles, but I quit before I finished the tutorial.

But... I have many.. many years experience with Beer, and living on a budget.. so there is that.

and yah... so far.. while I like what I see with what I am seeing it, and this could be it's own game, I mean, even if they scraped that other stuff, they could make a kick ass dungeon running game like DDO, with the systems they have shown here.

    We shall see.

What makes you think you are a "typical MMORPG player" or that you represent the opinion of one?

Plenty of people liked the jumping puzzles in GW2. Just because you didnt like them that does not mean the majority of players didnt like them as well.

I dont think any "typical" video game player of any genre is going to have 10s of thousands of forum posts on a niche video game message board.

Sounds more like a "hardcore MMORPG player" to me.

For me the problem is the same as with Camelot Unchained.

All I want is a first persistent beta world with first draft of some mechanics where I can create a character and test some stuff, then give feedback.

Something each 2 man asian dev studio would develop within 6 months.

But agile developing with steady deployment to Prod environment and ongoing UAT hasnt arrived at the Indy studios yet it seems.

I think the more fair question should be what single player game has parkour. Cause there was ZERO MMO in that video. There was ZERO Multiplayer in that video. Just a single player very rough parkour game made with some of there art and what appears to be some animation asset packs like Open World Animset and Balance Animset by Filmstorm put into UE4. Something most people could do with next to no effort.

Atleast it appears they are using there own models and such.

I do want to see how this will play out in a party of people.  Have to stand around and wait for that one person that just can not do Parkour. Hopefully this is something that wont be in dungeons cause there is nothing more of a fun killer then having to wait for that one person thats drunk or cant push the keys right. But it looks like its way far from that point. Still waiting for ANY kind of multiplayer in these videos.

This is true and as I linked earlier there are literally free asset packs for UE4 that add all the parkour items such as sliding, jumping, climbing, zip lining etc...  Someone mentioned balance beam and I didn’t see that in the pack I linked but this one has it for $40.  https://www.unrealengine.com/marketplace/en-US/product/balance-animset

I also agree that their main challenge is the multiplayer.  They want at least 100,000 players per server with 200,000 characters all moving around with some offline intelligence.   During the Kickstarter they said that SpatialOS was going to be “the fabric the game was built on” and enable that.  Then a few years back they said they were switching to a homemade system with off the shelf software that they could make do the same thing.   Now recently in Discord Caspien has said that their homemade solution is facing challenges and they are researching alternatives.

But don’t worry,  they have a low-res parkour single player course demonstrating the same thing that free UE4 asset packs do...

Jumping puzzles not being in other MMOs isnt proof of anything but then, I guess, it wouldnt be a day on MMORPG.com without someone suggesting that correlation does equal causation.

A lot of MMOs cheap out on servers to save money so the tick-rate is usually pretty low. FF14, for example, has a server tick-rate of THREE. So, these MMOs pretty much cant have advanced jumping puzzles.

Also, there are other MMOs with jumping puzzles but they dont make a big deal of them.

In fact, theres an MMO that jumping puzzles that you cant miss whenever you come to this site, can you tell me what that MMO is?

It doesn't fit in at all, nor has Caspian spoken about testing a time parkour track. This is something they can release now in an attempt to get the whales engaged again, the whole premise of this studios is to milk the ivory tower whales over and over...since you know, there has been no evidence anyone else will give this clown a penny. With kickstarter anniversary coming up in a few months, I imagine all the work is being done on cash shop items and stretch goals....also making sure Settlers of Elyria looks awesome to try and get new people to spend money on virtual titles/settlements that don't actually exist.

People wonder why as of March 8th the State of Elyria is not out?

2020 is the year Caspian says they "Rise"

No SToe, No SoE, Shinies have gone to shit, mood pieces they rip off other artists, studios has gone complete silent, and Serpentius has developed some kind of paranoia (said a kingdom pretty much hated him in entirety)

Pre-Elyria which was supposed to be completed in Summer 2019 is not even talked about.

I quit GW2 because of the stupid jumping puzzles, though obviously I can't speak for what others did.  And I suppose to be honest, it was more a last straw sort of thing since the game's progression system in general was just boring.  GW2 is more for the gameplay, really, which is why it's horizontal progression for the most part and... jumping puzzles.

That said, I'm under the impression most people who backed Chronicles of Elyria didn't do so for any action gameplay considering how little the developers ever talked about it, but instead did so for the resource management and politics and war and building systems, etc.

Heh, that brings back memories of Lunia, an action RPG that was stage based.  Dashing past and avoiding all the traps then waiting at the exit to the next part for my party members to catch up wondering what's taking so long, doing a face palm while watching their health bars gradually go down to empty...

Jumping puzzles are the worst I still fall in Blackfathom Depths in fact I avoided that dungeon like a plague because I could not jump the first few platforms and inevitably fall and when they used the LFD thing I would get left behind and then the tank and others would start cursing me the stupid healer who is not with them because I am still trying to get across. Side ways have mobs so that is out. I try to tell them and they don't listen and I just leave and tell them to get another healer.

I think I took years(sheesh) on some of the Datacrons in SWTOR. One day I spent a whole day trying to get to one of them and then finally had to get my son to do it. I just kept falling when I was almost there.

if you think these are final graphics and grading the game on it, you are a tool and should be flogged. There is no reason to test something in full graphics. You spend more time in the mechanics than worrying about graphics at this point. Whats wrong with you people?

This is in general also, I see this a lot with games being developed and people poopoo all over it saying the graphics are from the 80's....

Many of the comments are not talking about the graphics in fact they are saying there is nothing new. They said setting aside the graphics there is nothing new from what they showed before. So what progress is there being made.

Now see, DDO, was also a game with Traps, Platforming, jump Puzzles and all the like, and difference I guess, that I have learned is that there are elite players and elitist players.

The Elitist players run though the jump puzzle and then mock everyone else for being too slow, or bad.

Where the Elite Players are still there next to you after you fell a few times, encouraging you on, and telling you that you can do this, showing you where to jump next, and teaching you how to complete the dungeon, because they not only have the skill to play the game, they are good enough to teach it.

Just keep that in mind when you think about the groups you are in.. and who really knows their game vs who just acts like it.
