If you have a group of friends that play it and can agree on your focus for the session its a lot of fun. When I say focus sometimes it is hey we have never just sailed that direction. The random groups can be ok, but sometimes you get that douche nozzle who is just aggravating. Now you do not have to group if you do not want to but why play the game then its just more fun with people. They have put a lot of work into improving the game it has come a long way they probably released it six months to early and that hurt it. I would say now its a 7 or 8/10.
Anyone with first hand experience with this game tell me how its been so far?
I play Sea of Thieves on and off quite frequently since the launch. Things have definitely improved a lot. However, my recommendation is try not to focus on getting Pirate Legend right off the bat. That seems to burn a lot of people out and really makes the game feel repetitive. I mean, the game is repetitive, but the interactions between you and other crews is what makes this game shine. The PvP in the game makes my inner troll come out sometimes and you can get very creative with how you sneak on someone's ship or how you engage someone.
As for content, the game gets a new event every month. Typically it adds new stuff to the game in the form of new mechanics such as chain shot to take down people's sails, to new story stuff. Overall, the game is getting a lot of love from the devs. For $20, it's a definite recommendation from me.
Bonus, if you got friends to play with, it makes the game that much more enjoyable. The game kind of focuses around group play instead of solo play. You can solo it, just won't be as much fun considering you're taking 2-3 minutes to sail between islands and its just quiet between that time and having to manage a ship yourself; including during encounters like skeleton ships and what not; can be a bit of a pain. Everything scales down so you can handle it, just can get overwhelming once in awhile.
A couple things haven't been mentioned, though I only dabbled in the game during a free month of Game Pass and I'm sure the game has improved quite a bit:
1 - There is no statistical progression in this game. Everything you're "working toward" is cosmetic only. If feeling stronger in hour 100 than you did in hour 1 is important to you, that's something to be aware of. This game is about having fun in the moment with your friends, not about chasing a carrot on a stick.
2 - It is not a persistent MMO, but is session based. You'll log into a new session of the game that is populated by another 30-60 players or so (I don't the actual count). You'll spawn a new ship when you log in. When it's sunk, it'll respawn. Again, don't look for especially meaningful persistence here other than moving up a rep bar with a certain faction and getting to buy a different shirt or different shovel because of it.
That said, even as empty as it was at launch, it was clear they had a good foundation of something unique and worth checking out. If you haven't read any deal breakers for you, give it a try.
I have this game down as maybe the biggest ripoff in the history of game sales.Someone says it is a 7 or 8/10 lol, maybe by industry BUSINESS standards of giving out high scores like candy but to any honest person, there is no way this would be more than a 4/10.
Microsoft sold this for $80 bucks and what was delivered was worth about $5.
A few streamers created some popularity but were not playing it as any pirate game or for the content "little as there was"they were playing it as a Battle Royale, how sad is that?So $80 for a BR game ..lol.
This game holds NO WATER when compared to Atlas .Furthermore in Atlas you can run your own server/single player mode if you want and add whatever mods you want, change the settings and enjoy some single player fun. Large world, pets mounts, building stuff including ships, crew, cannons, flame throwers, treasure maps/guardian fights etc etc.
The graphics in SOT are also sort of cartoony,Atlas you get realistic graphics and creatures have very realistic AI.Has the game improved since it's launch, idk perhaps, doubt it ,even if it has it still wouldn't be worth more than $15 because Atlas is twice the game for 1/2 the price.I bet this goes for close to that same $80 because Microsoft is the publisher and wants to make huge profits.
I wouldn't support Microsoft ,they are scum for retailing this at $80 ,out of their minds actually.I paid $30 for Atlas and now after more content and bug fixing it is only $33.99 which i guarantee is still cheaper than SOT asking price on Steam.
Never forget 3 mile Island and never trust a government official or company spokesman.
I tried this game on Xbox Game Pass on PC, The communication tools in this game are total trash.
Needs Text & Voice Chat, then it wouldn't suck so bad.
Nice, if i had known i would have waited a little longer before buying both State of Decay 2 Deluxe Edition and Sea of Thieves Anniversary edition on the MS store.
Would be nice if they allowed us to enable them on steam by letting us somehow link them that is IF your not directed to the MS client from steam/epic.
I hate that. Launch a game from steam then it launches itself into say uplay or origin (or vice versa) creates lagg and other issues for me. Alias i would rather stick with games on original platforms IF they still require the need to launch into another launcher to launch the game.
I played the game when it first launched and it is not the same game as it is today. Rare has added a lot to do and it can be incredibly fun. As one person mentioned don't fall into the grind pit with pirate legend and athena, just play to have fun doing voyages and tall tales. Another statement that holds true is it is a lot more fun with friends, solo play can be very aggravating if you end up on a server with brigs and galleons just looking to pvp. One great way to enjoy the game if you don't have any friends that play is join some of the communities, there are a lot out there that make it very easy to find people to play with. Xbox companion also has a section where you can post a LFG or find others that are looking for people to play with. The game is well worth the money for the enjoyment you will get out of it if you follow some of the tips people have posted. If you are just looking to grind at any point there are alliance server where groups will get together to have a server of just people wanting to pve and they will also help protect you if there are people on the server looking to pvp, although the pvp is what really makes it fun for me but everyone has their own play style.
Edit: Don't go into open groups, they are usually a pain point for this game. Just reiterating the importance of finding those sites and resources to assist in finding people to play with.
Can you guys not even spell check the titles of your articles? Very unprofessional and it's happening more and more often lately.
A nice reminder if the error goes farther than expressing your opinion of it.
Yeah, you have a hang-up about people posting their opinions on here. No problem expressing your own opinion, of course. Again, I think you might be on the wrong forums.
This is a great game to drop in and out of. If you only have a little bit of time you can join a crew that is likely already doing something or you can go solo and do a quick mission. There is absolutely no P2W and the PvP is a blast (although the sword fighting is stale but being updated soon)
I played this with my 6 year old (others voice chat turned off). We managed to finish one of the story missions which I thought we would never do because he only seems to want to catch and cook chickens and snakes. He also thinks it is funny to drop a treasure chest over the side of the ship when I'm not looking. He plays on Xbox (included in gamepass) and I play on PC. .(included on the same game pass(Ultimate)).
If you aren't sure just get gamepass . . I think it is still $1 most of the time to start.

Hey, I have a great solution! Let's ignore each other. Here, I'll go first.

'But there are many. You can play them entirely solo, and even offline. Also, you are wrong by default.'
Ikcin in response to yours sincerely debating whether or not single-player offline MMOs exist...
'This does not apply just to ED but SC or any other game. What they will get is Rebirth/X4, likely prettier but equally underwhelming and pointless.
It is incredibly difficult to design some meaningfull leg content that would fit a space ship game - simply because it is not a leg game.
It is just huge resource waste....'
