I was in beta for DDO, and after a very disappointing beta, canceled my preorder at release. So, i decided to go back and try it for free for a week, hoping they had added content or something to make the game worth playing. Sadly they did not.
The game is as one sided as any. Its, get a quest, run an instance, turn in quest. Rinse repeat. The instances are entertaining the first time, but after it gets recycled a time or two it loses its luster. The storyline and narration are nice, but fail to make up for the glaring lack of fun.
Advancement is slow and the concept of getting no XP unless you complete the instance adds insult to injury. It encourages players to avoid anything with a challenge and stick to something they can grind through without much risk. There is no feeling of being in an MMO here. I have yet to find a channel that has any sort of chatter and the community seems to be pretty isolationist. In the 4 days i played on the trial account, i think i got a total of 2 people to actually talk... well, other than blind party invites that is.
This game is doomed to a quick and ugly death. There are so many better alternatives out there that the only thing keeping this afloat is its ties to the DnD legacy.
DO NOT WASTE YOUR TIME ON THIS GAME!

I love the game but it's not for soloer's, anti-social types, status seekers ect. The game is about grouping and the interaction that comes from it. Don't get me wrong, I would play it solo I like it so much but I'd much rather get in a group and meet some players I haven't adventured with before and experience some new adventures. And then you have all kinds of friends you can adventure with on the tougher quests. The comment "rinse and repeat" is often used but that tends to happen when someone isn't willing to take on the harder quests and simply wants level 10 as soon as possible via the easiest or best xp paying quests that require the least trouble. The only quests I repeat are the ones I like and I still haven't done them all beings I play all 5 of my characters (one is approaching 10 though 9.3).
And I started in the beta as well and almost gave up on it early on because it requires you to interact with others and many just can't handle that (including myself at first as a 10 year mmog vet who liked to solo) and there is no world chat channel so the game is pretty quiet unless you are grouped or in an active guild. I wouldn't have bothered to leave the game normally to waste time on the whiners circuit but the servers are down for maintenance today and the game is so addictive you have to keep yourself busy when it's down occassionally.
Try it for yourself before you listen to a few negative posts.
I agree always with trying it for yourself. No one can tell you exactly about a game. Everyones experience is different. I think it is very boring and needs a lot more added. All the characters of a race look like every other character of that race. I don't care for the click-fest attack system. And many more things. But you might like all of these.
I am happy to see that Turbine is starting to listen to all the people that are leaving the game. They have a lot of work to do IMHO to make this actually DDO.
Yawn.
