Starting player, have some questions

LanmoragonLanmoragon Member Posts: 994

Hey all.  I started the Lineage 2 trial (from the CoV box) about 2 days ago.  Ive wanted to play it for a while since its pretty much the only major MMO I havent tried.

I am really liking it so far.  So far I am a level 13 fighter on the Bartz server, and although I have read that awhile ago there wasnt the "newbie" helper stuff, I still have some questions to be answered.

1)  My major question is about class choice and its how useful it is in PvP.  I keep reading on the forums about more "tank" like classes getting totally dominated in PvP by nukers/archers.  Is this just the usual forum trolling or is that pretty much the truth of it?

I usually just play a class I like by reading the class descriptions on the website.  So far the knight classes look pretty interesting.  I like the look of the armor and I really want to play a class that uses a shield/one handed weapon(sword, axe, etc.)/and can also change to a 2h.  Are any of the knight classes usefull in PvP?  Also does the adventurer class use a shield and a one handed weapon and is it a fairly good class for PvP?

2)  What is the "CP" bar above my health bar on the UI?  Everytime I have been almost ganked by somebody this bar goes takes a hit or goes totally empty.

3)  Whats a decent strategy for adena saving?  So far I realize there is no way to buy everything I want.  So should I just save to buy the best weapons?  Or the best armor?  Or take the middle ground on both?  I sorta like the way the system is, I really have to pick and choose exactly what I want, but I can definitely see why there is a large adena farming industry in L2.

4) Sorta ties into what adena is actually useful for.  Are most of the items dropped from mobs/bosses/raids?  Or is pretty much everything I will ever want crafted?  Coming from WoW im used to basically just showing up for a raid to get my top tier gear and gold was never really a problem.  I almost never had an item crafted.

5)  About crafting...is that what items like bones, animal skin, varnish, iron nugget, and other items im picking up in my lower levels for?  Will I be able to eventually craft and use these items or can only dwarves craft?  Should I even bother saving up these items or just sell them for some precious adena?

6)This is an edit because when I logged in I realized I had one more question.
Im in the Talking Island village right now(and I guess I will be for a few more levels) and I see this whole "Manor System" thing.  Looks like I can buy seeds, harvest them, and possibly get rewards for what they grow?  Exactly what is this and is it worth my time?  I read what the manor manager had to say but im still pretty confused to what it actually is.

Thanks for answering any questions.  For question 1 I guess im really just looking for a description of the classes listed under the fighter tree...for example what type of armor they use, if they use a 2h weapon or a shield and 1h weapon, if they are wanted in groups, and how useful they are in PvP.  Ive already decided I want to use melee weapons first, and will possibly make an archer character if I decide to stick with the game.

Hey I just started Lineage 2 the other day and I'm lvl 12.5 and I'm also a human fighter but on Hindemith server.

I have exactly the same questions as you, but I'll try to answer any if I know.

    1. If you go to the races guide here, it kind of tells you a little bit. But I think PvP goes like this, archers and nukers own, everything else is too slow to catch up.

    2. I've been wondering that myself.

    3. One tip is not to use an escape scroll by accident and then pay 10k adena to get back to the talking island . . . LoL. I think an important thing is to realize when an upgrade is necessary and when one isn't. Like I can buy a new sword for like 15k adena, but I think a quest i'm going to do soon will give me perhaps an equivalent sword? Then again< i'm noob, wait for Torak to answer.

    4. I'm not sure raid gear drops very much, I think most things are crafted and then sold for big money.

    5. They're good, but only dwarves can craft, so I'm not sure exactly what you can do, I just sell em for adena.

    6. Yeah I think the seed system is that you buy seeds and you get special items that the manor (the ruling clan) needs and you sell it back to them for more money than the NPC's.

Seriously, I'm exactly at the same point you are. I'm thinking of going warrior and then gladiator and going dual weapons. I just think dual wielders are just sick, but then again, I'm kind of touchy on gladiators as they are hybrid tanks/damage dealers and usually hybrids have trouble alone or have tourble finding a niche.

My ideal character would be one that can dish out huge damage and can actually take some, so I guess the gladiator is the one for me. Good luck, wait for torak to answer.

    1. Archers and mages dominate the pvp scene. They promise to change this in C5 but I have my doubts for a lot of reasons.

Knight classes are decent in pvp. DA's and SK's are the most PvP orientated but stillget overshadowed by the range classes. In close quarter battles the DA can make a huge impact, but these aren't too common. The SK is more well rounded b/c they have ranged attacks and higher dps.

    2. The CP bar is your combat points. They work like hit points but only for pvp. IE. if someone tries to kill you they have to break your CP THEN get past your HP. A mob will only have to break your HP.

    3. Adena saving... Well, you should upgrade all your NG gear as far as you can. Remember you can do it up to level 25 so make sure you can get the best NG stuff as you won't be able to upgrade it past level 25. For D grade and up, I'd say just suck it up and just buy the best gear. You really don't need jewlery until 40. Learn to play the economy. That's probably the best way to make adena.

    4. Most items have been crafted. You don't need to worry about crafting until you hit B grade. Even then, you can probably buy most of your gear. D grade can be bought from teh stores and there is a lot of C and B grade still floating around the market from older players. It's usually cheaper to craft C grade and up rather than buying it.

    5. Yes, those items are used for crafting. Dwarves can setup craft shops so all you need to do is bring them the materials and click a button and you get your item. Don't confuse this with trading the dwarf your items. You can save it if you want. In your position, I would save it until I got high enough level to get to giran and sell it to private stores. You will probably make your life much easier in the short run.

    6. The manor system can make you a lot of money. If done right, you can easily make millions prior to hitting level 30. The way it works is that you buy the seeds and farm them. You use the seeds on a mob and you get back fruit with the harvester. If you seed a mob it will ONLY drop adena. you turn the seeds in back to the manor and they give you a reward. The reward will be listed in the manor. The amoutn given to you has an adena value listed in the manor. If say the reawrd is varnish and the manor says 600 adena, it means that the manor will reward you 600 adena worth of varnish for each seed that you return.

Cryomatrix, a class that can do a lot of damage and take a lot of punishment would be either a destroyer (melee) or necro (mage). Both are getting a nerf in C5, the necro much more so than the destroyer.

How are the healing classes?  My main was a druid in WoW and I actually liked being a healer most of the time, although I went feral spec once BWL came out with some great feral gear.

Healing in PvP seems to be a different type of rush, with the task of keeping your guys alive.

Are healers wanted in PvP or are they useful at all?  Like usual in PvP, do healers get mass targeted right away and totally demolished?

  • SantaClaws48SantaClaws48 Member Posts: 280
Most people find that healer classes are pretty boring to level up and only get their enjoyment from pvp. However, my roommate plays an SE and he loved it because it wasn't taxing for him to play. Downside is that all you can really do as a healer is heal. this changes in C5 so that will e good.  Healers are defintely wanted in pvp. A pvp group w/o a healer is probably going to get rolled. They pretty much rated like this for PvP

Bishop > Elven Elder > SE

The reverse is true for pve. Healers do get mass targetted first in pvp but there are ways around it. Usually you see healers sporting a shield, which helps a great deal against archers. Staying far in the back makes a huge difference as well because you don't give the enemy an easy target. Do healers die first in pvp? Sometimes, a lot more so in small pvp. Rarely in large scale pvp like sieges. I wouldn't worry about dying a lot in pvp. Eventually, you'll get good enough where it'll be hard for people to kill you.

Hmm, im really thinking about making a healer and trying it out.  My first character was a melee type when I played WoW (and usually is in any MMO I try/play) and I couldnt level him up that high.  I loved playing my druid for some reason, although the PvP made me want to have a melee.

Think ill just give it a try, at least for the starting levels, to see how I like it.

  • SantaClaws48SantaClaws48 Member Posts: 280
Playing a healer at lower levels isn't really like playing the class how you would at higher levels. Unless you find someone to party with, which I imagine will be hard, you're probabaly going to be leveling by nuking mobs. This won't change until level 20. If you do decide to go the healer route, find a friend that you can consistently play with.

  • LanmoragonLanmoragon Member Posts: 994
Thanks for the tip.  Sounds like playing a healer might be a good idea to save for later...possibly when I have already leveled a toon, gotten in a decent clan and made some friends, and possibly level the healer with one of their alts.

  • SantaClaws48SantaClaws48 Member Posts: 280

Well a healer makes a ton of cash because you don't spend anything on ss or sps. Even if you decide to play a healer later on, I suggest you find friends of similar level to play with or the game becomes a real drag until you do. But most mmo's are a drag unless you have friends to play with.

    1)  My major question is about class choice and its how useful it is in PvP.  I keep reading on the forums about more "tank" like classes getting totally dominated in PvP by nukers/archers.  Is this just the usual forum trolling or is that pretty much the truth of it?

This has mostly been true the last few chronicles (updates). At the moment ranged classes are having much more fun in PvP for a number of reasons, one of them being that the PvP in NA has been centered around clans and groups as opposed to 1vs1, meaning a group of nukers and archers can easily dominate a group of melee/tanks before they get to them.

However in the next chronicle (should be comming to NA servers mid-summer) tanks are getting a big pvp boost, since their hate/taunt skills will finally work against players in PvP. They also get more new skills than other classes do in comparison.
Tanks are also very useful and fun for raids~

All in all, if you really enjoy tanks in MMOs in general, play it. If not, and if PvP is very important to your playstyle, I would consider a ranged class, or a damage dealing melee class such as dagger classes or Bladedancer / Gladiator. Or if you still want to play a tank, Dark Avenger is a very strong PvP tank class, especially when it comes to 1vs1.

    2)  What is the "CP" bar above my health bar on the UI?  Everytime I have been almost ganked by somebody this bar goes takes a hit or goes totally empty.

The CP bar is like an extra HP bar, but used only for PvP. It was added in Chronicle 3 to lengthen PvP battles and to allow for more variety in strategy in PvP.

Always get best weapons before armor.
Sometimes you can skip an entire grade of armor completely. Nukers, for example, use Devotion set (No Grade) and then go straight to C Grade because the set bonus on Devotion is nice.

There ARE ways to make money but it's not always apparent for new players. The best way to make money while levelling is to make sure you do quests, and to take advanage of the manor system. [url=http://lineage2.stratics.com] has some decent overviews of the manor system and the staff there will be helpful to any questions regarding that system.

Crafting will be a major way of getting gear for cheaper when you hit B grade or higher (lvl56+). Higher level items rarely come from drops and is generally cheaper when crafted by buying or gathering materials.Sometimes players of the more well-organized raiding clans are able to get most of their equipment from raid drops, but raiding isn't as prevalent in L2 as it is in WoW so unless you're in a really really good guild this is unlikely to happen.

    5)  About crafting...is that what items like bones, animal skin, varnish, iron nugget, and other items im picking up in my lower levels for?  Will I be able to eventually craft and use these items or can only dwarves craft?  Should I even bother saving up these items or just sell them for some precious adena?

Unless you're in desperate need of adena, I suggest keeping all your materials. They will come in handy when you're level 56 and you need them to craft your B Grade equipment.

6)This is an edit because when I logged in I realized I had one more question.Im in the Talking Island village right now(and I guess I will be for a few more levels) and I see this whole "Manor System" thing.  Looks like I can buy seeds, harvest them, and possibly get rewards for what they grow?  Exactly what is this and is it worth my time?  I read what the manor manager had to say but im still pretty confused to what it actually is.

Hehe. I've been playing for over a year and the manor system still confuses me.

Basically you buy the seeds (make you're buying the right ones.. i.e. you fit the level requirement), and you buy a harvester.

Put the seeds on your shortcut bar (lets say shortcut 1).
Put the harvester on your shortcut bar (lets say shortcut 2).
Now, go out and find a mob in the area of the village you bought your seed at. (In your case it would be anywhere on Talking Island).
Target a mob, seed it by pressing the seed shortcut (shortcut1) and then when the mob is dead, press the harvester shortcut (shortcut2) to get back your fruit.
Once you have your fruit, you can sell it back to the manor NPC in exchange for materials. (Each seed has a set kind of material it will give back.)

Beaware though that the NPC has a buyback limit that refreshes every day. If the limit is filled for that day, you will have to try and sell it back the next day. Like I've already suggested, check out [url=http://lineage2.stratics.com] for detailed explanation of the manor system.

Hmmm .. I think i will answer this in new thread or something since it will get too long. :)

As for playing a healer, if you really want to try a healer as a main class, go Bishop or Elven Elder. Shilien Elders are fast becoming buffbots/recharge bots and not much else.. in large clans most nukers have outside SE buffbots making the class useless to actually play.

If you're thinking of levelling one just to make some money, prophet is the way to go~
Especially if you plan on levelling an archer in the future.. it's very nice to have a prophet to two-box. (If you plan on going nuker in the future SE would be better)
Prophets cost absolutely no money to play in party and when you're lvl56+ you can go sit at Forbidden Gateway and sell buffs for extra cash.

I actually made a new character on the Sieghart server because I saw a message on my old WoW guild forums about a guildie playing there.

This time I made a dwarf with thoughts of going into being a Warsmith.  Are Warsmiths really like they sound, being able to summon machines and such?  Im expecting to be dissapointed with a reply, thinking that the summons are pretty weak/useless, or that they are too expensive (for the materials used in summoning?) to make use of them.

Even if thats the case I do like crafting, so if the machine making side of the Warsmith is pretty useless I can always try out the crafting aspect.  Also if I can make some decent cash through crafting I might set myself up better off in the future for making an alt that will be useful in PvP by having the adena to get decent gear every few levels.

  • TorakTorak Member Posts: 4,905

Oh no, you will not be disappointed with the Dwarf summons

At lvl 28 you will be able to summon a smaller mechanical guy that you can hunt with (a pet) its sort of pricey as it cost C grade crystals to summon him. (it use to be D grade) The "pet" has melee weapons and a cannon that pops out of his chest for ranged attacks.

I have only seen the seige golems once and they are huge. They are used to knock down castle gates.

(this is the smaller "hunting" pet)

  • SantaClaws48SantaClaws48 Member Posts: 280
The dwarf summon is actually really good. In terms of pvp, it will win youa  lot fo 1v1 battles. That mechanical golem is a beast. It's only good for pvp or solo leveling. But even for leveling you should have a buff bot.

    You get three other summons.

You have the big boom. This is basically a time bomb on wheels. It's OK for pvp. Most people just use it for power leveling. If done properly you can big boom a character from 1-40 in a day. 40-52 on the second day.

You have the siege golem. It's only used during sieges for taking down castle doors and walls. It has lots of hp so people will just go for you instead of the golem. You can't use it on people.

Then you have the wild hog cannon which is another siege only golem. It has a ranged attack but is much more squishy than the siege golem. They go down pretty ast so people usually just target it.

Both of these golems cost about a mil in adena to summon. 300 c crystals for the siege and 120 b crystals for the wild hog cannon. Effective sieging will require either a siege golem or wild hog cannon.

Yeah, but what's the point in playing the game if you need a bot to help you level, yeah i know it's excruciatingly slow, i'm lvl 14 and i'm finding it slow already, I can't imagine how it is later levels, but either way, even though I have run bots in other games and I have bought/sold gear, I don't think I'll be doing anything 3rd party with lineage2.

The game is pretty sweet so far, and I don't mind a long grind, as long as it means something and it is for a purpose.

Would anybody happen to have a link to any castle siege videos, preferably showing the Warsmith summons?  I found a thread on the L2 forums with a bunch of links to video's, but all of the castle siege links I tried are either dead or are at an incredibly slow download rate, about 7 k/b a second.

One question ive had since I started playing my dwarf was about crafting in general.  Do I need to get the lvl 1 crafting ability from the trainer in the starting village and then just basically collect recipes and keep advancing the crafting level whenever possible?  Or is it much deeper than that?

  • SantaClaws48SantaClaws48 Member Posts: 280
My comment about the buffbot is a very general term. What I meant is that you will need some form of buffer to help you out (dual-boxed, dual-client, or some other means). Well, you don't need one but they cretainly help you out a lot and will make your life 10x easier. If you can find a buffer friend, that's even better b/c you're not paying for two accounts. You shouldn't have problems at the lower levels since you should be getting newb buffs from the newbie guide. If you just found out about this now, well I feel sorry for you.

Lanmoragon, I don't have any footage of the siege golems but I do have siege footage if you're interested. you hit the nail on the head about crafting.

  • SantaClaws48SantaClaws48 Member Posts: 280

I looked through some of my old footage. It's from C3 but most of the things are the same.]

4:04 you can see the siege golem in the back.

Right click save as. It's about 255 mb.
