I've played WoW, EQ, EVE, EQ2, DAoC, DDO, Horizons, UO, NWN, Ragnarok and cannot remember asides from EQ (my first MMORPG) the excitement of getting home from work and loading up Ryzom.  I downloaded the free trial a few days ago and just realized how badass this game is yesterday.  I was out killing stuff increasing my fighting skill.  Then I started to wonder about what else there is to do.  So I checked out the mainland (after the noob island) and explored for a short while to find nothing all that really that exciting, except for the amazing weather effects.

So then I moved onto harvesting.  All I have to say is:  damn.  Harvesting sounds so simplistic and common but damn did they do a fantastic job at thier harvesting system.  It can get boring from time to time but I usually find myself enjoying a deep conversation/roleplaying with another player harvesting along with me.  If not that, I'm looking for rare minerals to harvest and boom -- it blows up in my face poisoning me.  Crap, time to heal or I'm dead if it happens again.  This is just ONE instance of the game I adore.  Not only does harvesting get you dappers (in-game money) but also allows you to gain friends and earn knowledge about the game from veterans that you can talk to to while harvesting.

This game is complex and by no means is made for the person who thinks they can become leet with the almighty Sword of the Wolf.  You craft your weapon buddy, and you better understand how to use that weapon.  Or else, you're going to be toasted by a Master Spearman.  The crafting system is also wonderful and makes you really consider what you want to spend your dappers on, because if you don't you'll be kicking yourself in the arse telling yourself "Only if I didn't buy that stupid sword I could have made this badass breastplate!".  I don't want to even get into the PvP system, which is perfect.  GvG, FvF, politics that could erupt to possible Race-Wars. I can go on but I won't.

The skill system is the way to go.  Like Ultima Online, Ryzom also adopts this formula but lets you max anything and everything (which could take a long, long, long time).  Now, to me this is an incredible system.  My personal quote for Ryzom is this:  I feel free, I feel like me.  Why you ask?  I am in no shape or form like that other warrior-type class standing next to me.  We're both fierce gladiators with very different intentions on how to win the battle.  To sum it up, the skill system kicks ass.

For my conclusion, I've heard a lot of people say that the characters all look alike.  I disagree.  Yes, you'll find some players looking sort of alike but I have yet to come across more than a few people that look like me (armor-wise).  I've been playing this game for about four days now (I still have TONS to learn) and cannot get over how well the community reacts with each other and how well each character has a well-defined persona.  This game has it all.  It's also, like previously stated, the MMORPG's greatest secret.  I love it.

Serious death penalties makes every close call an adrenaline rush, and every minor achievement a major victory. This alternative rule-set should be in all MMORPGs.

It is definitely great!! It will get a bit boring from time to time, but it is by far the best and most balanced.

And here is my experience from last night.

I was out killing things, minding my own business and I took some hits and then all of a sudden I was healed. I looked around and here is this guy healing me. Well, I said, "Thx" and I went on fighting others. Well, this guy kept following me and healing me. He wasn't after my kills (probably wouldn't have helped him anyways) and he didn't offer a dual to me. And he followed me the whole time I hunted. This is what is called a GREAT community. I had people offering me armor and other things. I declined because I want the experience of doing it all on my own.

Yeah I checked out SoR also having been a former SWG player and although its not my old game, it is fun and the community and support have been awsome.  You can also kind of compare the abilities to old SWG as far as if you get bored, just go do something else for awhile.  I know harvesting was pretty boring and the one skill that I have yet to match levels with the rest of my skills but its definately no easy task until you get the skills and know when to back away from a pile of green goo.

I helped out another player and brought him back to life several times when he blew up from harvesting.  It was pretty funny and I know the graphics probably are not supposed to look this way but almost everytime I would go over to bring him back to life his toon was half planted in the ground. lol

    Was it Sahan?

I was blown up 4 times last night trying to harvest, heheh.

People say the community is small, but the rate seems to be growing. I am hoping we can convert many more of our beloved SWG refugees

I agree... the game is magnificent.

I posted in the pub about this game. Let's get more Ryzom folks on that thread and get some exposure. This game deserves some good exposure.

lol Pretty funny when a pile of green goo takes you out.  Im a former Doc (on 1 of my many toons) so thats why I wanted to take up healing.  Old habits are hard to break.  I dont know the persons name as I have not had much time to play.  I did just reup my sub to the game though.  If your a Tryker and still on the noob island look me up (Ravensong).  I left one of my charcters there to level a little bit before going to the mainland.

I am getting ready to leave Alaska on Saturday as we are moving and driving the alcan highway.  Gonna be a long journey to the lower 48.

Hmm I may need to pull down a new trial to see if the population has improved.  If it has then I may sub to Ryzom again :)  Only reason I left the first time was because the game was so darn empty last summer.

Well I just completed a trial and resubscribed to my old account.  I haven't played for very long, but I haven't seen a whole lot of other players around.  Then again, I do tend to be online at add times lately.  Tonight, if I can get a chance, I will log in after dinner and see if there are more people around.

I really enjoyed the Trial.  There were lots of other people also going through the trial.  But not that I switched to my original account, I am in the mainland, away from the more popular spots with people hang out, I guess.  I think I can enjoy Ryzom with a large population, but I definitely would like to meet some people and maybe get into a good roleplaying guild.  That would certainly make the game more enjoyable for a longer period of time.

I am truly happy to see that so many new players are making their way into Ryzom :)

As tho the problem with not many people arround well if you have a Zoraï toon that might be the reason. I belive that generally Tryker and Fyros areas are a bit more populated. With that said do not go and create a diffrent toon try to join a guild instead :) that takes the lonly feeling away since almost everyone is mostly talking in guild chat :)

This is the link to the guild forum on the official boards Click me.Try reading about all the guilds in there to find one that suits your own playstiles :)

Ahyeah, it´s truly good to see so many new players around
Now if only some of them would also come to our german Server Leanon
I´ve had the pleasure of helping a Newbe the last two evenings and, as do most people, I realy enjoy it.
It´s a fascinating thing, I was riding about the stable when a TellWindow poped up with, Quote:
"How do I get my Animal from the stable?"
I answered: "Well, first, Hello and Welcome to Atys. :)"
Then I continued to explain the few keystorkes to get your Mount from the stable.
He answered: "Oh, uhm.. Sorry. Hello. I´m not used to being polite, I`m comming over from WoW."

*cough* Well, That might explain a lot. We´re not WoW. We´re friendly and open to all New Players and their understandable questions. Regardless if you choose the english, german, or french community.
Everyone´s exceptionally friendly, polite and helpfull. Thats what I love the most about this Community.
While you may not notice this in the Forums, wich are strangely underpopulated, and sometimes errupt in the usual Flamewar about PvP or whatever else there is, just like in every other game. The Communitys are by deflaut
    nice and cool people.

Have Fun and don´t let the Gingo bite.

Ryzom, we dare to be different.
    Do you dare to adapt?

I'm on day 2 now and so far it's been great! Still on the island trying stuff out... I feel all warm inside when there are so many choices what to level up. Has looked at the official forum and the community looks great too.

oh... I'm also a SWG vet

Welcome glad to see folks giving Ryzom a try.  I'm also a SWG outcast.  I started Ryzom on April 6th and haven't looked back.  I love the community, the skill system and how you can eventually level every single skill if you want.  I wish I'd found this game a year ago.

The world is amazing, you have to be careful where you walk else you get eaten for dinner.  Or in the case of Yubo's, get peed on.  I think I was hooked on Ryzom the moment I saw that for the first time, just watching them and their animations is a hoot.

I'm happy to have stumbled across this under-rated game.  I hope many more SWG outcasts get to see what a real game this is, and what a real community is like.

You may have already noticed, but there is a distinct lack of bugs in Ryzom compared to SWG with their big money, arrogant company and management.  Ryzom is a well polished game.

Ryzom is certainly not for everybody, but it sure has helped me to be able to move on from my prior SWG addiction, only to become hopelessly addicted to this game.
