I, for one, having played through over 25 hours of the game so far, think that Square-Enix deserve every cent of that $60 for the first part of the remake. It's the most fun I've had in a long time. They really put a lot of effort into this, and I have very few complaints about what they've released.
I can't get over how many people are griping about having ONLY 40 hours of story for $60. And the open world thing... so what? Why the heck does every game need to give you free reign to go everywhere? Go play one of the plethora of open world options out there, if that's what you want. Open world isn't a prerequisite for a game to be fun. (Frankly, I often find open world games exhausting).
I'm just waiting for a F2P overhyped sandbox WoW clone with full PVP, epic raid bosses, instanced group content, and Crysis-quality graphics to come out. That, or something fun.
Why the obsession with FF VII? Personally, I think FF II/IV had one of the better storylines. Dark Knight gets betrayed by his king and later becomes a Paladin. Good stuff.
Except they should probably change it so that characters actually die in the story instead of coming back near the end.

I agree. I've become so fatigued with mediocre open world tripe that I've come to view linearity as a selling point. For every Witcher 3, there are 10 Assassin's Creeds or Far Cry's, and I am beyond sick of them.
Remaking a classic rpg and milking it into 4-5 titles is unprecedented and not to be commended. So we're supposed to cheer and clap for having to spend $60 x 4 or more to play a remake? We're suppose to believe they couldn't do it in 2 titles?
Also 40-45h for an RPG is pretty short.
Would anyone applaud a Witcher, Skyrim or other title that is 40h?
You literally do not have to play it, it's a choice.
The game is incredible, so if you want to skip it because "muh principles" then fine...but you're wrong.

Gdemami absolutely not being an armchair developer
FFVII was at least imo never the best game in the series as far as design goes but this reiteration of the game looks like a professionally made game unlike 99% of the gaming market.
I personally don't like the combat but for some they like it.
I am unsure of how much gaming the OP did prior because name an open world game that was not JRPG or FF designed?
Almost every game is linear in design, yet afterwards even FFX allowed you to use the airship to go anywhere so it became less linear over time. What FFX did offer were the best characters ever made in a video game,a great story and very immersive because you felt like it was a real world happening but in a Fantasy setting.
Back on FFX7 it is what it is a FF game but there are two types of designs SE uses and FF7 falls on the side i am not a fan of.
Even still i see some people,a LOT of people talk about the $60,do i need to remind of the awful game Microsoft released "Sea of Thieves" that sold for $80?Even as "part of a game"FF7 right now has more value than most of what the market is selling. How about kickstarter games, they are selling nothing BUT A DREAM...SIGH.
Never forget 3 mile Island and never trust a government official or company spokesman.

New games usually cost $50-80 when I was growing up. Newly released cartridge games could be pretty expensive. I think I liked FF IX and Final Fantasy Tactics better than FF X. FF X was fun though. Didn't play any past FF X. I still have a soft spot for FF II (IV in Japan). FF III/VI was kinda cool. But I didn't like the story as well as II/IV. FF VIII was okay but certainly not the best.

You shelled out $60 for a small piece of the game. Its people like you who are ruining this hobby for the rest of us.
It once again has raised the bar for what you could expect from a AAA RPG. That's how far off the mark you actually are. The game is a jaw dropping spectacle of love and ingenuity. The amount of work that went into making the game we have now (let alone what might come in the future) is a jaw dropping achievement.
$60 for 30 hours of game play..it's 1/10 of a real final fantasy game. just wait for all the pieces on PC in one game for $20 because you get value on PC and u get crapped on with console.
Where is anyone getting 30 hours? Playing on Easy while making no attempt to do any sidequests or stray off the beaten path for loot?
Don't make shit up.
I played my review on the regular difficulty, did about 80% of the side quests, missed a ton of stuff still and ended up with 40 hours thereabouts. It's a full game - it's not the full story and I think that's really where people are tripping up. This was always propped up to be a part of the overall retelling. The fact it feels like a stand alone game even knowing that knowledge going into this is a testament to what the team at Square Enix pulled off.
Additionally, this really brings up the fact that time does not equal value in games for a lot of people. I could spend $20 on a game like The Banner Saga and more enjoyment out of it than I did spending $60 on a game that took me 80+ hours to beat, like say Final Fantasy XIII, and I can confidently say I did not enjoy as much.
I did all the quests I could before beating the game and it took me to just shy of 50 hours on normal. I didn't race through the game, but I also didn't idle for too long either. Some grinding happened halfway through the game as I tried figuring out the combat better than just mashing square like a lot of people seem to be doing. That took me about an hour probably total. The game is long, fully voiced and the epic that people would be looking for. The only major drawback for me was the implementation of the combat at points. Challenge should be hard, but rewarding. It's a delicate dance not to stress fatigue or make certain encounters hair pulling frustrating. They were not entirely successful with that and I understand people's complaints about that. I will say that many encounters have a trick to it (like virtually every other FF game out there) and some players dismiss it as poor combat implementation.
The original Final Fantasy 7 remains one of my favourite games of all time and I still play through it roughly once a year.
I'm still really sceptical about the remake.
I loved the original combat mechanics (combined with materia system), so any changes have me worried. Moving the combat towards action combat almost definitely means a reduction in depth, and therefore a reduction in my enjoyment and replayability.
But more than that.....in the original FF7, 99% of your time was spent playing the game, as opposed to watching cutscenes or reading dialogue. Square Enix changed direction at the end of the 90s and started replacing gameplay with story. By the time we got to FF10, nearly 50% of my time was spent not playing the game! WTF!! What a fucking waste of my time.
So, I greatly fear the same for the remake. Of those 40+ hours of "playing" the remake, how much is actually playing the game, and how much is just watching the story?
also knowing the ending already kinda make me want to really not rush to play it, its not like its a new thing
This is for both of you. As a fan of the original, I was VERY skeptical of what this game was going to be. If you play on normal and take the time to figure out the combat system, you will see how they tried very hard to translate the spirit of the original into the new game. As for the story, they expanded on it greatly. I think you will be really happy with what you will see. There is a lot of cutscenes, but I never felt like the combat was shortchanged.
You shelled out $60 for a small piece of the game. Its people like you who are ruining this hobby for the rest of us.
The game is a full 40+ hour experience and incredible to boot.
In other words: you're an idiot who has no idea what they're talking about, you're ruining the hobby for the rest of us.
with that attitude i wouldnt be surprised if they just make a model and make you go round and round for 120 hours and call it a game. and you'd be just like hey you get 120 hours of gameplay...
you obviously dont even know it when you just got fucked

Fuck you kindly, sir.
with 'legendary' status and 5342 posts at time of this response, i'd hardly count you as a "fresh" player, especially considering your other responses
its not that you dont see the problem, its that you are arguing for perceived benefit of generating false hype
stretching pre-existing story for 1 game into 4 parts runs a extremely high risk of lowering the quality as the game will need 4x padding to make up ground. You think alot of game needs fat trimming? Then you are looking at the original FF7 which is only 1 game. This game has at least 4 times the fat content.

SO FUCK YOU AND YOUR BS
STOP HAVING FUN, GUYS.
With all they clearly had to put into this game which is obvious to any unbiased sane person who actually plays it, it's pretty clear that making the entirety of FFVII's storyline stretched out to the standards that this game gave to its portion of it would probably have taken an extra decade or so. Assuming it could even fit into how much programming memory one can fit into a Playstation game.
(although there were a few parts that did seem quite padded, but much less than what I was expecting)
(also, it's pretty pathetic that SpankingYou feels the need to argue this in a thread about someone (the article writer) who never played the original FFVII and thus would be judging this game on its own merits, which at least for the article writer passes the test with flying colors regardless of anything to do with what the original FFVII was like)

Considering that the actual gameplay is far superior to those games, absolutely. A 10,000 hour game that isn't good is worthless.
