I still have Drakensang Online loaded up. Been awhile since I've been on, but it's a fun 'wack a mole' type game and I play it when I want to have some mindless fun.

not really, only it means the one writing things really are not researching anything and is pulling things from nowhere, with again is the norm of journalism, with also is why no one witha sane mind even belive in the news unless he can confirm the same thing in at least another 6 places
You pretty much said it yourself, when it comes to me personally. The average Browser-based MMO game is more actively trying to open my wallet, rather than give me a great gaming experience.
I'm usually open to try new things, but I'm quick on the delete button if things start to feel off.
I play a couple of games on Kongregate and a couple of PBBGs....Most of them are idles and you just check in once in awhile. YOu don't really "play" most of them.

That was the first thing that came to my mind, are there any Browser games not tied to cash shops?I honestly can't even think of a browser based game.I have to wonder,is this just a pre cursor question before we are fed 50 articles on browser based games.

Pretty much first browser game for me was Runescape. It was literally 3 brothers in their mums basement. Andrew, Paul and I think Ian? Can't even remember back that far. Was from that weird in between stage of post DMUD / Runescape before Jagex was formed. That's the first browser game that I can recall. Had a good community and it was good times watching a company form. Before the game got bigger and sold to chinese and the community became random strangers.

No, because I can totally ignore the question. I can actually just not answer it if I choose to do so. Forums are cool that way.

I don't think I ever played a browser based MMO. Not sure I ever would anyway. Article mentioned how they now remind him more of mobile games. That for one would put me off right away. Mobile games are fine if you have no choice in the matter but not for real gaming.
Anyone ever play Mobsters, Heroes, Outworld, or Bloodlines on MySpace? Mobsters (I think Bloodlines) also moved over to Facebook before the games got totally shutdown. Largely text-based massively multi-player PVP games with sparse graphics, but they were fun. Could have been better, to be sure. Though, in some ways, they were more fun than many 3D MMORPGs I've played.

Mr. Bradford, I think you meant, "...than ever..."

I remember all those web empire building games. I tossed so much time at some of those games. Not any more though.
Did you play Mobsters, Heroes (medieval fantasy), Outworld (sci-fi outerspace colony), or Bloodlines (vampire clans)?

What you should have said was that, Unfortunately browser MMOs have always been designed to get you to open up your wallet instead of providing a compelling gaming experience, and nothing has changed.
Still visit Runescape .. Eldevin and Drakensang for a period each year just dropped Drakensang to put another game into rotation for a bit ..
If people only knew just how immensly popular (and populated) Runescape still is... they are still hitting over 200,000 concurrent players as of this week.
They have more than 1.6 million active monthly players now.
Crazy.
I like it as a chill game for me .. Lots to do explore/craft improve .. solid game ..
I try out most new mmorpgs. I don't care if it is through a browser or how you get it - I just care about the systems and mechanics and if it has what I like and doesn't have what I dislike.
