Biggest problem is not the servers. Its the bad reviews all the beta testers are putting forward. They have one unified message. The game is not fun.

I would say that the unified message is more "The game is shallow".

Yep, and that is a BIG problem for ARPGs. The real meat and potatoes of the genre is replay value through build diversity.

I read some posts about even the bosses. They dont vary in mechanics, so they all feel like the same fight over and over again.

It feels like an ARPG-lite and I don't think more content will change the fundamental flaws in design and gameplay

Well, don’t give up on that yet, it still might implement more systems, with only 4 classes they could go for a dual class system, which would shake things up greatly

They would need to rework a lot of gameplay including boss mechanics.

Don't see how this game is going to recover and I do feel sad since I would like to see this game that is in the Torchlight series do well seeing as I loved the other two games.

Torchlight 2 has been in my Steam library for years and I still haven't started it, but I'm pretty sure I'd enjoy it since I liked the first one and reviews were good.

I'm not really one for early access, though. I wasn't looking for Torchlight 3 anytime soon just as I'm not looking to Baldur's Gate 3 in August. I don't want to experience a game for the first time in a poorer state than if I'd just waited awhile, and lord knows my backlog is big enough that I don't need to buy games on day one.

If we're being honest, though, a good part of the reason for Torchlight's success was that it was a good ARPG at a discount price. At $30, if Torchlight 3 can add some depth by the time it leaves Early Access, it'll still sell plenty of copies. It'll probably be 50% Off by its second holiday sale, and gamers are much more forgiving when they pay $15.

They themselves knew the game was not very good, but they needed to get it out the door for a money grab. There was no hope for this game starting from my early testing of it, and it never really got better.

It can be a serviceable, shallow ARPG, in probably six months, but I suspect it will release before it's ready.

I think they plan on raising the price for the official launch but that won't go well imo. I also probably would never suggest anyone buy it unless they add offline AND mod support. I'd say it's 50/50 that they make no new content after launch due to poor sales. And dedicated servers will be removed as well.

Don't be sad - as this game - other than the name - has nothing to do with the Torchlight series.

TL3 doesn't feel nor play like a Torchlight game at all.
    Kano banned? wow wth?
Yeah, because of his ‘Marketing in 2020 Summed Up’ thread. I reckon its a temporary ban though.

Not only wasn't it egregious it was also funny as hell and quite true about corporate PR using trending topics to try to make us think they're warm and fuzzy caring entities when we all know they're just in it for the bucks.

If he was banned for that I really got to wonder what they're thinking since it wasn't a political post IMO, just an anti corporate bullshit post.

Why in Earth would anyone get banned for that? If that is true its kind of outrageous. Not only was the thread itself only mildly skirting the line, @DMKano has for years regularly posted interesting and thoughtful contributions to this forum.

The intelligent approach would have been to lock the thread and send him a PM/email asking him not to be a naughty boy in future (although imo there was nothing wrong with the thread anyway).

The game isn't pay to play. It is buy to play. Free to play is seen by many to be the worst marketing model, so I doubt many were sad to see that moved away from.

Many elements of Torchlight 3 in closed beta remain unimplemented in early access as of yet, and more is to come that wasn't even available in closed beta. As content continues to open up the reviews will better reflect what all the game offers rather than just the bit shown to date.

While there are only two skill trees per class, characterization goes beyond skill trees alone. Pets now have customizable ability loadouts and are more durable than before. A character can have one of many relics equipped, each having several passive effects and active abilities. Beyond that, each character gains access to three passives at certain levels from a wide assortment. There is a fair bit of diversity with that, which expands further with gear choice, especially when using sets that introduce that add their own unique abilities when complete.

It is certainly not the most complex game of this type, but Torchlight never has been and shouldn't have been expected to. It has more depth than some give it credit for, especially those focusing only on the lower number of skill trees than the larger number of customizable elements that make up the character.
